R. V. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
(Autonomous Institution affiliated to VTU, Belagavi)
III Semester Master of Technology
Common to MHT / MST
DESIGN OF BRIDGES, FLYOVERS AND GRADE SEPARATORS (ELECTIVE)
Time: 03 Hours Maximum Marks: 100
Instructions to candidates:
1. Each unit consists of two questions of 20 marks each.
2. Answer FIVE full questions selecting one from each unit.
3. Use of IRC:6, SP:16 and Pigeaud’s curves permitted.

UNIT-1

1 a Describe in detail the investigations to be carried out before the

construction of the bridge. 10
b Classify the bridges on various aspects and explain any two in detail. 10

OR

2 a Describe the various loads to be considered while designing a bridge

and explain any two in detail. 10
b Describe loadings of different types and explain anyone with a
sketch. 10

UNIT-2

3 a Distinguish between box culvert and slab culvert with a sketch. 06

b Design the box culvert for following details:
Road width 7.5 , Height of vent=3 , clear span 3 , footpath on
either side 0.6 , wearing coat thickness 80 , type of load
class tracked vehicle. Materials grade concrete and 415
steel. Angle of repose 30°, density of soil = 18 / . 14

OR

4 Design a slab culvert for an effective span of 7 and road width of

7.5 . Footpath on either side is 0.5 and thickness of wearing coat is
80 . The slab has to support class wheeled vehicle. Use
concrete and 415 steel. Also sketch the details of reinforcement. 20

UNIT-3

5 Following data pertains to a -beam slab bridge.

Span 14 , Number of longitudinal girders=3, Spacing of longitudinal
girder=3 / .
Materials used: grade concrete and 415 steel.
Loading is class tracked center to center distance of cross
girder is 3.5 .
Design the interior panel of the bridge. Use Pigeaud’s curves for
moment calculation. 20

OR
6 Design the cross girder for the following data:
Span = 16 , Road = Two lanes. Number of longitudinal girders 3.
/ distance of girders 3 . Center to Center of cross girders 4.0 ,
footpath 1.0 .
Materials used: grade concrete and 415 steel.
Loading: class Tracked. Sketch the details of the
reinforcement provided. 20

UNIT-4

7 a Explain rocker and roller bearing with sketches and how are they
useful. 08
b A reaction of 2500 is developed at the supports of a 20 spanned
beam bridge. Design a rocker and roller bearing. Given:
Allowable pressure on rollers 5 / !" # $/ % &'#(
Bearing pressure on rocker pin =30 /
Allowable pressure on bearing plate 2000 /
Allowable pressure on concrete bed block =3.8 / 12

OR

8 a Describe elastomeric bearings and its advantages. 06

b Explain the factors to be considered while selecting a bearing. 07
c Discuss expansion joints and also the requirements it has to satisfy
on a bridge. 07

UNIT-5

9 a Distinguish between pre-tensioning and post tensioning in )*

structures. 06
b Discuss the advantages of Pre stressed concrete bridges over
bridges. 06
c With sketches explain various types of bridge decks used for post
tensioned )* bridges. 08

OR

10 Design a post tensioned )* bridge deck for a National Highway

crossing to suit the following data:
Clear span 10 , width of bearing = 400 , clear width of
roadway = 7.5 , Footpath 1 on either side, Kerbs = 600 wide,
Thickness of wearing coat=80 , Live road class tracked.
Materials : + grade concrete and 415 steel for supplementary
reinforcement. 7 diameter high tensile wires with ultimate
strength of 1500 / housed in cables with 12 wires and anchored
by Freyssinet cables anchorage of 150 diameter. Loss ratio is 0.8.
Check for ultimate strength. 20
