Assignment 1-2019 Final

1. A soil sample is isotropically compressed under drained conditions and then undrained conditions. The student is asked to calculate stresses, plot stress paths, and determine slopes and excess pore pressures. 2. The student is given soil properties and asked to calculate capillary rise height and plot effective stress and porewater pressure distributions with depth for a soil profile with sand over clay. 3. The student is given a seepage flow net and asked to calculate seepage rate and velocity at a point, using properties to determine permeability. 4. The student is given initial and changed total stresses on a soil element and asked to calculate principal stresses, plot total and effective stress paths, and determine excess pore

Assignment 1

1- A cylindrical sample of soil is isotropically compressed under drained condition with a

vertical stress of 200 kPa and a radial stress of 200 kPa. Subsequently, the axial stress was
held constant and the radial stress was increased to 500 kPa under an undrained condition.
[20 marks]
(a) Calculate the initial mean effective stress and deviatoric stress. Create a graph with the
x-axis as p, 𝑝𝑝′ and the y-axis as q (p, q space). Plot these values in (p, q) space.
(b) Calculate the increase in mean total stress and deviatoric stress.
(c) Plot the total and effective stress paths (assume the soil is a linear, isotropic, elastic
material).
(d) Determine the slopes of the total and effective stress paths and the maximum excess
porewater pressure for each space.

2- A soil profile includes 12-m-thick fine sand of effective size 0.15 mm above a very thick
layer of clay. Groundwater level is at 3 m below the ground surface. (a) Determine the
height of capillary rise, assuming that the equivalent capillary tube diameter is 10% of the
effective size and the sand surface is similar to smooth glass. (b) Plot the distribution of
vertical effective stress and porewater pressure with depth if the void ratio of the sand is
0.6 and the degree of saturation is 90%. Neglect pore air pressure. (assume 𝐺𝐺𝑠𝑠 = 2.7) [20
marks]

3- Using the flow net shown below, (a) determine the seepage underneath the 400 metre wide
concrete dam, and (b) the velocity at point “a” in m/sec, where the height of the net’s square
is 657 cm. The soil has a GS = 2.65, D10 = 0.03 mm. Estimate the flow by using Hazen’s
coefficient C = 0.5 to determine the permeability k. [20 marks]

4- The initial effective stresses on a saturated soil element at a certain depth in a soil mass
are σ1 = 40 kPa, σ2 = 20 kPa, and σ3 = 20 kPa. The groundwater level is well below the
soil element. The changes in stresses on the soil element are shown in figure below.

(a) Calculate the change in principal stresses.

(b) Plot the total stress path in (p, q) space.
(c) Plot the effective stress path assuming that the soil is a linearly elastic material, and
determine the maximum excess pore water pressure. [20 marks]

5- a) Find the 𝑁𝑁60 (corrected SPT values) shown below for an energy ratio of 60% using a
high efficient US-type sampler without liners and donut hammer (with Japanese throw
release) in a 2.5”-diameter boring. The invert (bottom) of the mat foundation is at
elevation +5.2 feet and N value is 26. (note that the depths are in imperial unit system)
b) Plot the corrected N values versus depth. [20 marks]

6- A mudstone rock mass at a depth of 200 m contains three fracture sets.

One set comprises bedding planes; these are highly weathered, slightly rough surfaces, and are
continuous with an orientation of 180/10.
Another set is jointing; these are slightly weathered, slightly rough, and have an orientation of
185/75.
The third set is also jointing; again the joints are slightly weathered and slightly rough, and
have the orientation of 90/80.
The strength of the intact rock has been assessed as 55 MPa, and values for the RQD and mean
fracture spacing are reported as 60% and 0.4 m, respectively.
Use the RMR system to classify this rock mass. (Hint: since it is a practical question, you may
need to make some assumptions based on the given information to classify the rock) [20
