Lesson 1 Speed, Distance and Time in 21st Century MATHletes 6

l. Objectives:
At the end of 45 minutes period, 85% of BEED 4B students are expected to:

a. Define the speed, distance and time


b. Appreciate the importance of the speed, distance and time through giving
example of experience
c. Compute the speed, distance and time of the problem.

group for we will be having an

likewise your secretary.
- For this group activity, you will write
S if it is for speed, D if it is for
distance and T if it is for time.

- I will only give you 2 minutes to talk


among yourselves then the
presentation will immediately follow.

distance is the far or near of the place and time is
the happening hour, minute or second.

and we need to study this because it is in
everywhere so we need to be aware.
C. Abstraction:

- Let us find out what is speed,


distance and time really mean, are

- Will you please read the definition of


speed? Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to “how fast
an object is moving.” Speed can be thought of as
the rate by which an object covers distance.

- Will you please read the definition of


average speed? Average speed is a measure of the distance
traveled in a given period of time; it is sometimes
referred to as the ratio of distance and time.

- What is the difference between


speed and average speed? Sample answer: Speed is focus on how fast the
object is moving while the average speed is
getting the distance and time equally.

- Example 1: If a car travels 100


kilometers in 2 hours, find the
average speed.

Solution: using the average speed

Example 2: Roy drives at an average of 45 mph
on a journey of 135miles. How long does the
journey take?

Solution: using the average speed formula.

- What is the importance of speed? Sample answer: The importance of speed is to


make our work faster and we can go to the place
in a short of time like going to the school, I walk
fast to arrive on time.

distance? Distance is the total length between two positions.
Distance is the amount of space between two
objects or the state of being far apart.

- Example 3: Lemuel’s motorcycle’s


average speed on a motorcycle is
50 km/h. If he drives it for 4 ½
hours, how far does he travel?

Solution: using the formula to find


the distance.

Distance= speed x time


= 50 x 4 ½
= 225 kilometers

Answer: he can travel a distance of


225 kilometers

example 4? Example 4: Sean drove 20 km/h for 2 ½ hours,
what was the distance Sean traveled?
Solution: using the formula to find the distance.

Distance= speed x time


= 20 x 2 ½
= 50 kilometers
Answer: Sean traveled was 50 kilometers.

- What is the importance of distance? Sample answer: The distance is important to


know if the place we wanted to go is far or near.
Example going to school if you are near you just
need to walk to save a money.

time? Time is the quantity measured or measurable
period during which an action, process, or
condition exists or continues.

- Example 5: Wilson can type 840


words in 20 minutes. Calculate his
typing speed in;
a. words per minute
b. words per hour

Solution:
his typing speed can be calculated
as:

a. typing speed= 20
= 42 words
per minute.

In 1 hour, we have 60 minutes, so:

b. typing speed= 42 x 60
= 2520
words per
hour

- Will you please read and answer the


example 6?
Example 6: Anthony can speak 700 words in 5
minutes. Calculate his speaking speed in:
a. words per minute b. words per hour

Solution: his typing speed can be calculated as:

a. typing speed= 5
= 140 words per minute.

In 1 hour, we have 60 minutes, so:

b. typing speed= 140 x 60


= 8,400 words per hour

- What is the importance of time? Sample answer: The time is very important to
guide us on what we are doing and we need to
use it properly because time is gold and it is the
most precious gift from God that we received
because our life depends in our time. Example if
you have an assignment or project do it
immediately to use your time wisely.

Solve each problem.
1. Mhar took a 5-hour bicycle trip. In all, he traveled 120 kilometers. What was his
average rate of speed? 24 km/h
2. Rolly travels from Lucena City to Manila every Saturday to visit his mother. The
trip takes 3.5 hours and he usually travel at an average rate of 64 km/h. how
many kilometers does Rolly travel from Lucena City to Manila? 224 kilometers
3. Wilfredo can write 200 words in 5 minutes. Calculate his writing speed in:
a. words per minute = 40 b. words per hour = 2,400

V. Assignment:
Solve the problem.
1. Alfred drives for 1 ½ hours at 75 km/h, then drives 120 kilometers at 60 km/h,
and finally drives for 30 minutes at 65 km/h. Calculate his average speed for the
whole journey?
