ABSTRACT

The people an individual surrounds himself with play a vital role in that person's development.

Especially with children since the people around them influence their social and emotional

growth. Peer pressure is the direct influence of people on their peers that may encourage one to

change his or her values and attitude to conform and feel included. It has the possibility to create

both a negative and a positive situation. It could lead to something harmless, or something that

could have very big consequences. It could also lead you to improve and better yourself. Peer

pressure happens because every individual has a need to belong. Everyone has a demand for

acceptance and belongingness. These are what drives people to give in to pressure, and in many

cases, one would forget about his or her better judgement for that. The pressure to feel included

can be powerful and hard to resist. In this research, the effect of peer pressure to deciding

students of Grade 10 on what their strand will be for Senior High School will be studied.
