Exercises 3
(Chapter 4)

1. The breakdown of an industrial machine follows a Poisson process with a mean of 2.3
per year.

(a) What is the expected time between machine breakdowns?

(b) What is the probability that there are no breakdowns within three months?

(c) What is the probability that the time until the first breakdown exceeds six
months?

2. 10% of students in a university are dissatisfied with the services at their cafe. 10
students were selected randomly and were asked to fill out surveys.

(a) In this group of 10 students, what is the mean and variance of the number that
were dissatisfied?

(b) If, instead, 55% of the students were dissatisfied, what is the probability that at
least half of the 10 would be dissatisfied?

(c) If 55% of the students were dissatisfied and 200 were selected randomly, what is
the probability that at least half would be dissatisfied? Can this problem be done
using the Normal Distribution? Why? If yes, solve it using the Normal
Distribution.

3. Suppose that 10% of piston products by certain prices are nonconforming but can be
repaired. Consider a random sample of 200 pistons and let x denote the number
among these that are nonconforming and car be repaired. What is the (approximate)
probability that x is

(a) At most 30?

(b) Less than 30?

(c) Between 15 and 25 (inclusive)?

4. The random variable X is normally distributed with mean 79 and variance 144. It is
known that P (79  a  X  79  b)  0.6463 . This information is shown in figure
below:

Given that P( X  79  b)  2 P ( X  79  a) .

a) Show that the area of the shaded region is 0.1179.

b) Find the value of b.

5. In a photographic process, the developing time of paints may be looked upon as a

random variable having the normal distribution with a mean of 16.28 seconds and a
standard deviation of 0.12 seconds. Find the probability that it will take on a value

a) between 16.00 and 16.50 seconds to develop one of the prints?

b) at least 16.20 seconds to develop one of the prints?

c) at most 16.35 seconds to develop one of the prints?

6. The number of days that elapse between the beginning of a calendar year and the
moment a high-risk driver is involved in an accident is exponentially distributed. An
insurance company expects that 30% of high-risk drivers will be involved in an
accident during the first 50 days of a calendar year. What portion of high-risk drivers
are expected to be involved in an accident during the first 80 days of a calendar year?

7. How often do you watch movies at home? A USA Today Snapshot found that about 7
in 10 adults say they watch movies at home at least once a week. Suppose a random
sample of n  50 adults are polled and asked if they had watched a movie at home this
week. What is the probability for the following events?

a) Fewer than 30 individuals watched a movie at home this week?

b) More than 42 individuals watched a movie at home this week?

c) Fewer than 10 individuals did not watch a movie at home this week?

8. A random variable has a normal distribution with σ = 4. If the probability is 0.9918

that it will take on a value less than 84.6, what is the probability that it will take on a
value between 70 and 80.

9. a) Assuming in a squared meter of dust of a surface, on the average there are

1000 asbestos particles on it. If a squared meter of dust is analyzed, what is the
probability that less than 950 particles are found?

with high blood pressure treated with this medicine fewer than 32 will have
bad side effects.
