Chapter II

This chapter discusses the methodology that will be used in the study. A descriptive correlational research design will be used to determine the relationship between self-esteem and academic performance of junior high school students in Luna National High School. The participants will be 238 junior high school students from grades 7 and 8 who will answer survey questionnaires measuring their self-esteem and academic performance. Statistical analysis including mean, standard deviation, and correlation will be used to analyze the data and determine the significance of the relationship between self-esteem and academic performance.

METHOD

This chapter discusses the method that will use in this study. This includes

the research design, research locale, research respondents and research

instrument.

Research Design

In this study, the researchers use the descriptive correlational study to

conduct the research. The respondents will be able to respond by answering the

survey questionnaires that was prepared by the researchers. The researcher’s

questions that will be used are the questions that were formulated from the

indicators of the two variables.

McComley (2019) stated that descriptive correlational study design aims

to accurately and systematically describe a population, situation or phenomenon.

It use a wide variety of quantitative methods to investigate one or more variables.

The researcher does not control or manipulate any of the variables, but only

observes and measures them.

Moreover, all of the data that will be gather are helpful for the researchers

to compile all the information that will be used during the process of this

research. It is also useful for the students to know the relationship between self-

esteem and academic performance. Through this, the students will be able to

understand the factors of having different level or scale of self-esteem in relation

to their academic performance.

Research Locale

This descriptive correlational quantitative research study will be conducted

in the island of Mindanao of the Philippines. It is specifically located at the Region

XII, province of Davao del Norte, municipality of Kapalong. It has 13 Barangay,

and one of the barangay that the researchers focus on is the Barangay Luna.

The study will be conducted in Luna National High School and it is located

at Purok 03, Barangay Luna, Kapalong, Davao del Norte. It offers two strands in

Senior High School which are the General Academic Strand (GAS) and Technical

Vocational Livelihood (TVL) that offer specifically in Agricultural Crops

Production.

This area where the research located at is beside of Luna Elementary

School. There are 429 students enrolled for School Year 2019-2020 including the

Junior High School and Senior High School. It's just a simple school but, the

students compete in other schools academically and skillfully.

The study would be very helpful for the students especially in Barangay

Luna. It gives realizations to the students, parents, teachers and other

organizations that there are really relationship between self-esteem and

academic performance of students. It would give insights for them to determine

the two variables.

Research Participants

The respondents of this study are the students of Luna National High

School. Specifically, the study focuses on the Junior High School Grades 7 and

8. The researchers want to know their level of self-esteem to determine the

relationship of the two variables which are the self-esteem and academic

performance of students.

Research Instrument

There are various procedures of collecting data. The main instrument

used in this study is the survey questionnaires. As a quantitative research

instrument l, this is an attitude scale that was aimed to determine and measure

the self-esteem within the students of Luna National High School grades 7 and 8.

In gathering the data, the researcher uses the non-probability sampling

procedures. Specifically, the convenience sampling that defined as a method of

selecting samples that are available and capable of participating in a research

study.

For the self-esteem of the students, the following parameter limits were
employed.
Scale Descriptive Meaning
This means that the item
3.0-3.9 Very High was observed by the
student all the time.
This means that the item
2.0-2.9 High was observed by the
student most of the time.
This means that the item
1.0-1.9 Low was observed by the
student occasionally.
This means that the item
0.09 Very Low was observed by the
student never.
Statistical Treatment

The data will gather by using questionnaires regarding the self-esteem

and academic performance of students.

Mean Score. This statistical tool was used by the researchers to measure

of how close the scores are centered in determining the significance between the

self-esteem and academic performance of students in Luna National High

School.

Standard Deviation. This statistical tool was used by the researchers to

get the average amount that a given score deviates from the mean score.

Person R. This statistical tool was used by the researchers in

investigating the relationship between the two variables, the self-esteem and

academic performance of students.
