Curriculum News
Language Arts: This week we will launch into a special language arts unit based on The Hundred Dresses,
the Newberry Honor book by Eleanor Estes. It is a heartfelt story that teaches the timeless message of
compassion and understanding and addresses the consequences of bullying. We will explore the text as
we focus on making inferences, character traits, note taking, comprehension connections and theme. In
addition, this week we will introduce the students to what will be their weekly language arts homework
although we will be completing it in class as practice this first week. In lieu of that regular homework
format, we will send home a special reading comprehension/language arts sheet for this first week’s
official homework; it is due this Thursday, 9/12. We do send home a different formatted language arts
homework packet periodically. Starting next week the two-sided Word Work homework “packet” will be
enclosed the first day of the school week and due Thursday. In Writer’s Workshop we are continuing to
reinforce the structure of a paragraph. We will also introduce different descriptive writing exercises
including: working with strong verbs (vs. weak ones) and show-vs.-tell which are mini lessons to support
our first writing genre: narrative. We are continuing with our cursive instruction as we continue to learn
how to write lower case letters.
Math: This week we will continue working on Lessons 6 & 7 where we will focus on multiplication
strategies as it relates to division. Students will be tested on lessons 1-6 on Wednesday. No math
homework on Wednesday night. A study guide/review will be sent home Tuesday as homework to
prepare students for the test on Wednesday. IMPORTANT: Your child is to take his/her math
homework workbook TO AND FROM SCHOOL AND HOME each night from Monday through
Thursday. DO NOT TEAR OUT ANY PAGES. This is a different management system than what was
done in 2nd grade. We grade the homework each morning from the evening before. Thank you!
Science: We will introduce physical science with lessons about Matter.
Our goal is for your child to grow into an independent, life-long reader. Reading is the number one academic activity that has the
potential to have the most profound and positive impact on your child’s future. The research consistently supports that independent
readers who read an hour or more a day go on to be significantly more successful in school, college, careers, and life. Our 3rd grade
homework requirement is that your child read at least four times a week for 20-25 minutes a night. The more reading the better!
