Math This week we worked on dividing with zeros in the quotient. We

learned about factor pairs, factorization, and what prime and composite
numbers are. We ended the week by learning how to draw pictures to represent division equations, reviewing for the Topic 4 test, and then today students took their topic test. Our next math topic is over dividing by two digit
divisors. We will start this new topic on Monday.

Reading

Our story next week is The Chi-lin Purse which is a folk tale.
Folk tales are stories that teach us a lesson. Students will discover through
our story that the lesson is to do good deeds which will be rewarded by a good
deed coming back to you. We will work on the reading skill of comparing and
contrasting. Continue to work with your child on going back to the text to
find evidence. We are really struggling with this on the weekly test.

Grammar Next week we will be working on identifying independent and

dependent clauses within a sentence. Independent clauses can stand alone
as a complete sentence. Dependent clauses cannot.

Writing This week we wrapped up our descriptive writing unit. Students

wrote a descriptive fall themed story. They did a wonderful job of adding sensory details and figurative language. I will be grading these and passing
them back next week. We will take next week to practice the language arts
skills that will be on ISTEP in the spring.

Spelling- Our list focuses on vowel sounds with r. Practice! Practice!

Social Studies This week students finished up their Native American
Tribe presentations and presented to the class. Students received a group
grade on this. We studied our entire unit, and students took their unit test
today! They were able to use their notes.

Science-This week we skipped ahead to unit 3 in our books about our Solar
System. We did this so that we might be able to do some experiments outside
with the sun while the weather is still nice! This week we learned about the 8
planets in our solar system and compared the inner and outer planets. We
also learned about other objects in space. Students are taking notes in their
Science notebook to help them keep track of info and to study.

Note From the Teacher:

Parent teacher conferences are quickly approaching. I sent home the sign up sheet Monday.
Time slots fill up quickly, so please sign up for your three top choices and send it back ASAP. I will
send home a confirmation letter with your time within the next week or so. Remember...your student is leading the conference, so make sure you bring him/her along. :)
Next Thursday, October 1 we will begin Book It. The Book It program is sponsored by Pizza Hut
and awards kids free pizza for setting a reading goal and then achieving it. In the packet is the letter explaining how the program works and a calendar to start you off for October. Students need to
read 20 minutes a day which equals 600 minutes a month to qualify for their free pizza. The calendar will help you to keep track of how many minutes your child has read. At the end of the month I
need the calendar back with your signature validating their minutes.
Our annual Tupperware fundraiser is underway! A catalog, order form, and directions went
home with students on Thursday. We are running the sale through October 16. Please sell, sell, sell. I
know fundraisers are annoying, but it helps pay for our trip to Camp Amigo and our account is LOW.
We need the money! Think of Christmas gifts!
