Math This week we worked on finding the LCM of two numbers, adding

and subtracting fractions with common denominators, and unlike denominators, and how to add mixed numbers.

Reading

Next week we will be reading Weslandia which is a fictional story about a boy who is a bit of a loner and decides to create his own land or
society in his backyard. He ends up making friends through his imagination
and creativity. We will practice making inferences /drawing conclusions
while reading.

Grammar We will be studying prepositions and objects of the preposition.

Writing This week we chose our state for our state reports that we will

be beginning next week. We also began writing all 50 states in an attempt to

collect information and postcards from each one.

Spelling Next weeks list is a tough one! They are words from around the
world. Many dont follow a certain spelling pattern. This is a list that needs
to be memorized and practiced quite a bit. www.spellingcity.com/triton5

Social Studies This week we reviewed our chapter on the Middle Atlan-

tic colonies and we began studying for our chapter test which will be next
Wednesday. We also began memorizing our states and capitals! This week
students learned 9 northeastern states and their capitals. The quiz over
these will be on Monday. Students have flashcards they can study with plus
some resources online. After their quiz, they will learn the Southern states
and their capitals.

Science This week we began our next unit on Energy Flow in Ecosystems.

Students will learn about habitats, how to classify organisms, environmental effects on animals and their habitats, and much more. This will help lay
the groundwork for our Camp Amigo trip in April where students will learn
even more!

Note From the Teacher:

Fifth grade is beginning their Valentines Day carnation sales. Order forms will be coming home soon. Flowers arrive Friday, February 12 for delivery. All proceeds help fund our
Camp Amigo trip. Our fundraiser profits have been severely down this year. In order to
make the trip more affordable we depend on the fundraisers! Help sell carnations so we can
try to recoup some of the funds.
Science fair packets went home before break. Judging will be on February 5th. Mrs.
Watkins needs the Science Fair slips turned back in if your child will be participating. In
fifth grade, it is not required, however, students who participate get their Science grades
bumped up one letter grade at the end of the nine weeks. Thats motivation!
Enjoy your weekend.
