This week we worked on adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators. Finding the LCM makes adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators much easier. We reviewed how to simplify and convert improper fractions to mixed numbers.
Reading
Next week, our story explains how different animals survive when faced by an enemy. We will learn interesting facts as we read about animals who try to outsmart persistent prowlers with self-defense strategies. We will practice using graphic sources to enhance our comprehension. We will also work on finishing up The BFG.
Language Writing
Possessive pronouns show ownership: my, mine; your; yours; his; her, hers; our, ours; and their, theirs. We will work on correctly using these in our writing. This week we just barely began researching for our state report. I helped students set up their note cards and gave them helpful ways to stay organized. I also modeled how to cite sources and we practiced citing correctly. Next week we will dive right in and collect as much information as possible.

out our study guide. We studied for our chapter 6 test which we took today. Students learned their Southern states and capitals. The test comes Monday! Study the spelling, too!
Science
past two weeks with all the delays and cancellations. We began our next and final lesson of this unit on mixtures and solutions. We will finish the lesson next week and begin reviewing for our topic test.
Note From the Teacher: Fifth grade will be selling carnations for Valentines Day as soon as we get a final figure from our florist. Be looking for information to come home next week about our sale. The more money we make on our MudLove bracelets (which we are still selling) and on carnations, the less we will have to charge to attend Camp Amigo! Help us bring in the money. Some students are really struggling on their regional states and capitals tests that occur every Monday. This coming Monday is the Southern states and capitals. They create flash cards to study, but they need to study more in-depth than that. They must know which state matches which capital for vice versa on the test and they must spell the openended questions correctly. Its tougher than the kids prepare for each time. These quiz grades can either help or hurt their social studies grades. Please help your child study for these each week. We have the Midwestern and Western states to cover as well as the 50 states an capitals test. ~Mrs. Brosman
