• Flow assurance support to Wintershall who wished to determine a procedure to effectively clean-up the
Vega gas condensate production wells post drilling and completion operations.
• Analysis involved the development of a procedure to clean-up the to a (rate limited) well test package
on the rig, and also back to the host production system c.51km away whilst observing all subsurface,
subsea and topsides processing (including emission) constraints.
• As the senior engineer on the job I provided technical leadership on the flow assurance part which
involved checking results and presentations prepared by a junior engineer and interfacing with the client.

SPIRIT
Chestnut Slugging Analysis
• Spirit were experiencing continuous vibrations on the pipework downstream of the riser on the platform
and Spirit asked LR to identify the system slugging performance.
• Analysis was therefore undertaken to determine the flow assurance impact of which hydrodynamic
stability and slugging are the key components.
• Key deliverables of the project were to detail the frequency of slugs to topsides, slug volumes and
subsequent forces acting on the topsides piping during steady state operation over field life.
PREMIER OIL

Corrosion Inhibitor Partitioning OLGA Modelling

• Premier approached Lloyd’s Register (LR) to model the injection of the corrosion inhibitor proposed by
NALCO Champion to determine how the chemical will partition across the target locations.
• As the senior engineer on the job, I checked the OLGA model and the results that was issued to the client.
I also managed the cost and time on the project.

CONFIDENTIAL CLIENT

specification, export gas specification and turbine fuel specification using the topsides HYSYS model.
• Participated in HAZID and Peer review sessions.
CONFIDENTIAL CLIENT

OLGA - Fluent Coupling

• As part of an in-house product development, I worked closely with a CFD engineer to couple OLGA with
Fluent. To enable the coupling OLGA was required to run in the server mode using the OPC interface.
• An OLGA model including the well and the rig topsides was built and run in the OLGA OPC server and
connected to the Fluent. In this way, the data transfer occurred without any user intervention.
• This is well received by the client and has been approved to be used in the upcoming well clean-up work
scope.

WINTERSHALL

IRANIAN OIL COMPANY
Pardis, Yeoman & Hooman Concept Appraise
• Performed hydraulic analysis/ line sizing exercise aimed at selecting appropriate pipeline and gas lift line
sizes to aid the development concept.

TAMARIND ENERGY
Tui Development Study
• Tamarind Energy requested Lloyds Register (LR) to review the existing OLGA model for the Tui
developments’ subsea system and incorporate the updates where applicable.
• This included five gas lifted subsea wells flown to a FPSO via two manifolds and risers. A sensitivity study
on the lift-gas flowrates was also carried out to optimise the production.

LR Consulting
Johann Sverdrup Gas Export Pipeline Leak Analysis
• As part of the detailed engineering design of the gas export pipeline, Lloyd’s Register Consulting (LRC)
provided Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) for the gas export pipeline. I performed the following:
• Provided input to the QRA of gas dispersion in the event of a leak/rupture on the gas export pipeline.
• Built and OLGA model of the pipeline and simulated three sizes of leaks at three different locations.
• Provided leak rates, volumes and duration of effluent dispersion before and after isolation from the host
facility.

CENTRICA
Chestnut Start-up Modelling
• The Centrica operated Chestnut asset is nearing late field life and as such, water cuts are increasing in
from the wells in the process.
• An OLGA flow assurance model was built to represent the wells, subsea tie-back and topside FPSO facility
including the 3-phase separator.
• A benchmarking analysis of historical restarts was undertaken to confirm that the OLGA model is an
accurate representation of the current flowing system.
• A transient study was then undertaken to determine the maximum water cut that allows for a natural
restart of the individual wells in the Chestnut system. Where a natural restart was not possible, gas lift
sensitivities were completed.

MCDERMOTT MIDDLE EAST (On behalf of RASGAS and QATARGAS)

Qatar’s North Field - Firewater Transient Analysis
• McDermott asked Lloyds Register (LR) to perform a transient firewater analysis for the QG1 facilities on
Qatar’s North Field to which a new platform was being added.
• The purpose of this PIPENET study was to determine the peak surge pressures in the fire water system
for different transient operating scenarios such as valve closure (deluge, monitor etc.), pump trip and
pump start-up.

VIETGAZPROM

High Pressure High Temperature (UHPHT) Culzean gas condensate development.
• The analysis included development of a steady state and a transient OLGA model and input into the
development of the start-up philosophy and procedure.
• Several transient operations were required to accurately model the CLPSU of the system, including a
shutdown from steady state, a cool-down of the system to ambient temperature conditions and
identifying the no-touch-times (NTT) of the system.

WINTERSHALL
Maria Well & Pipeline Clean-up Study
• As part of the completions strategy for two deviated wells, LR was requested by the operator to provide
support for the cleaning up of drilling mud from the wells prior to start-up.
• Analysis was performed to determine; whether it was possible to successfully clean-up the wells; to
determine the duration of well clean-up to a rig, to determine the duration of a well clean-up via the
production pipeline to the production platform and to estimate the quantity and rate of drilling mud to
be displaced from the well to the receiving facility.
• Formulation of clean-up procedures for the two producer wells (to a rig and via the production pipeline)
were developed to maximise well clean-up whilst minimising clean-up duration, gas-lift requirements
and observing topsides gas and liquid handling constraints.

CENTRICA STORAGE
Rough Well Unloading Study
• Flow assurance support to Centrica who were conducting integrity tests on wells in the Rough field, using
water as the test medium, which would then be left sitting in the well after the test.
• Centrica were concerned that the well may not restart after the integrity test due to the increased static
head and that the limited topsides liquid handling would be unable to handle any water that did come
back.
• The scope involved building well in OLGA, conditioning it with the in-situ water post-test and then
restarting the well to determine if the well could start, and if it could, determining if the limited topsides
liquid handling capacity deal with the water produced during the well unloading operation.

CONFIDENTIAL CLIENT
Pilot Field Steam Injection
• The client requested that LR Senergy review specific areas of the concept of using steam injection and
horizontal wells to improve potential recovery from the Pilot field, offshore UKCS.
• LR Senergy built HYSYS models which included the process from sea water lift on the topsides, through to
the downhole sandface injection point in the wellbore.
• To cover a wide range of operating conditions, sensitivities have been performed on Overall Heat Transfer
Coefficient (OHTC) of the steam injection well, steam injection rates (cold water equivalent) and wellbore
tubing ID.

gas-lifted topsides well for a range of well start-up cases.
• Conducted various calculations utilising the key inhibition equations (Hammerschmidt, Nielsen-Bucklin
and Margules) to determine the required hydrate inhibition rate during the restart process.
• The outcome of this study resulted in modifications to the current restart philosophy of the asset,
maximising the economic potential of the asset through the optimisation of the restart processes.

TOTAL
Wellbore Depacking Study
• The project involved building a detailed OLGA model of the well from sandfaces to separator.
• The model was used to determine the risk of overpressure of the downstream LP systems in well restart

TOTAL
Shut-in Tubing Head Pressure Determination Study
• Flow assurance support to determine the maximum SITHP of a gas-lifted platform well and its behaviour
in a shut-in scenario using OLGA. The assumed maximum SITHP was conservatively based on the
maximum potential discharge of the compressor and drove relief cases for downstream equipment.
• Total wished to investigate whether this conservative assumption could be challenged via using OLGA
modelling of the well to determine the well SITHP in gas lift and non-gas lift scenarios.
• Additional operations support that involved detailed modelling of the well in OLGA and benchmarking
FWHPs and FWHTs with calculated PI and reservoir data.
