1. You live in a room in a college where you share it with another student.

You find it
very difficult to study and work there because your roommate always has friends
visiting. He/she has parties in the room and sometimes borrows your things without
asking you.
Write a letter to the Accommodation Officer at the college and ask for a new room
next term. You would prefer a single room and explain your reasons.(No.40)

Ans :

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that I wish to move into a new accommodation next term,
preferably in a single room, as I find my current sharing arrangement quite
inconvenient. My roommate has made it harder for me to concentrate on my studies
and I am hoping you would help me sort it out.

Due to my roommate’s inconsiderate behaviour, I find it troublesome to live in my

room, let alone study properly. For one thing, he has friends visiting him every single
day, for another, he regularly holds parties and listens to music loudly. In addition, he
often borrows my belongings without my permission. A few days ago he took a book
from my desk and lost it which I borrowed from the college library. Due to his irrational
behaviours, I find it challenging to concentrate on my studies and live peacefully.

I am expecting your help to move into a room of my own, where I will be free from such
distractions. I would be grateful if you could find a single room for me near the college
campus from the beginning of next term. I will be always indebted to you.

Yours faithfully,

Richard Heer

Model Answer 2:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to request you to allow me to move into another room, preferably to a

single room, from next term as I find my current accommodation arrangement quite
inconvenient.

I enrolled in the B. Tech course in your college last January and currently sharing my
room, 308, with a fellow mate who is also pursuing the same course. My roommate
brings his friends almost every day and holds frequent parties. It not only hinders my
studies but also breaches my privacy. He often borrows my things without asking and he
even lost a valuable item last month. His activities are not friendly and I find it hard to
concentrate on my studies due to his irrational behaviours.

My father, despite his financial crunch, did arrange for my higher studies in this reputed
college. It is my moral responsibility not to lose the sight of the dreams which have
been conceived in the eyes of my parents. The latest incident wherein he borrowed my
laptop without my permission forced me to bring these issues to your attention.

In view of all these undesirable and uncomfortable situations, I once again humbly
request you to allow me a new room next term, preferably a single room.

Yours faithfully,

Kim Neeraj

2. You have a pen pal and you are writing your first letter to that pen pal. In your letter,
describe your previous studies and work experience, your current activities, hobbies
and interests. Also, tell your pen pal that you will be visiting him/her.(No.39)

Ans :

Dear David,

I hope you are doing great. I am so excited to be your pen pal and writing my first letter
to introduce myself. I hope you will write me some time as I would like to know more
about you.

As you already know I live in Manila, the capital of the Philippines and a bayside city on
the island of Luzon, which mixes Spanish colonial architecture with modern skyscrapers.
It is a lively city with more than 1.8 million population.

Regarding my education, I have completed my graduation from the University of Santo

Tomas, Manila and my major was Bachelor of Business Administration. I finished my
MBA at the University of the East in 2015 and soon after that, I started working for Ayala
Corporation - one of the largest holding companies in the Philippines. I am now a senior
executive in this company.

I was so excited to know that you maintain a blog as I also do it. You can visit my
personal blog at daniel-francis@wordpress.com. Besides, I am a volunteer for a charity
organisation that works for the destitute and less privileged population in our city. I am
so surprised that you also like travelling as it is my passion to be able to visit different
parts of the world.

I would like to thank you for inviting me to the UK. I am sure I will someday visit you and
explore this great country.

Take care and write me back when time allows you to do so.

Warm wishes,

Daniel Francis

Sample Answer 2:

Dear John,

I am Raj from Delhi, India, writing to introduce myself. As a pen pal, I want to let you
know more about me. I would like to thank you for your letter and it was nice knowing
so many things about you. I must say, you have a great way of writing.

We both share many common interests and hobbies and it is indeed a great surprise.
The subjects that we had opted in for our respective college and university education
were coincidentally common. As a matter of fact, it is due to this reason both of our
employment sector and job responsibilities are strikingly similar. Ironically, the
respective companies in which we both are employed are archrivals in the industry of
Finance and Banking.

I would like to update you about some of the recent events. I have lately joined yoga
and meditation classes. However, I still do not miss my age-old hobby of swimming. It is
hard to recollect even a single day, barring the weekly off, when I miss a dip in the
swimming pool. Apart from this, my weekends are generally devoted to spending time
strictly with my family. The overall credit for my health, however, goes to the one and a
half session of yoga classes in the morning.

Thank you for inviting me to visit your city. I will certainly try to come and meet you. Let
us catch up in the coming December and till then take care and keep in touch.

Warm wishes,
Neeraj Mehra

3. You are an international student and have borrowed a book from the local public
library. You left the book on a bus and when you contacted the bus company, they
could not find it.(42)

Sample Answer 1:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that I have borrowed a book from your library on 08th May
but lost it on a bus. I am an international student and have been a member of the library
for more than six months. I am seeking your advice and would really appreciate your
guidance regarding this.

I borrowed the book 'Basic Economics' by Thomas Sowell on 08th May for a duration of
four days using my library card which is 254731025. Unfortunately, during my visit to my
aunt's house the day before yesterday, I missed it on the bus that I took. I contacted the
bus authority and they could not inform me about the book. I assume it has been lost
and I would need your help to follow the procedure under this circumstance.

I am not completely aware of the process a member has to follow to compensate for a
lost book. However, I am ready to pay the full amount to buy another copy of the
book or can do it myself if you want.

I would really appreciate your response regarding this.

Thank you in advance.

Yours faithfully,

Michael Keaton
4. Last week you were on a flight to London. Unfortunately, when you left the plane, you left
a bag. You did not remember about the bag until you got to your hotel.

Model Answer 1:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in regards to a lost bag on a plane that I took to reach London from New York on
17th August. Unfortunately, I forgot my bag on the plane. When I reached the hotel, I realised I
had left my bag. I am hoping you would help me recover it along with its content immediately.

My flight number was VG-4587F and my seat number was D-54A. On board, I kept the bag
under my seat as all the overhead bins were filled with bags and luggage. When I left the
airport in London, I forget to take my bag with me. It is a black leather bag, medium in size and
has two pockets in the front and one in the back. Also, it has a silver zip and keychain on it.

My bag contains some important documents, a few dresses of mine and a small brown purse
which had my ID card, driving licence, and some cash. The documents in the bag are really
significant and I need to submit them to my office next week. So if you could help me find the
bag, I would be really grateful.

I can come and collect it from the airport promptly. Thank you for your kind attention and
cooperation.

Yours faithfully,

Sonia Vincent
5. You are organising a trip to the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales for a group of
students from Perth in Western Australia.

Write to the manager of Student Hostel Services. In your letter, explain:

 when you want to visit the Snowy Mountains

 how long you will stay
 how many students are in your party and what accommodation you will require(24)

Model Answer 1:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to you to get some information about the accommodation at your hostel during
our visit to the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales. I am in charge of the trip for a group of
students and would appreciate your assistance regarding this.

I am John Miller, a lecturer at the St Joseph’s college in Perth. We are planning to take a trip to
Australia next month and would stay there from 2nd May to 7th May. We would like to visit the
Snowy Mountains in New South Wales with our students as part of a study excursion. We have
planned to stay at your Hostel during this trip for one week.

We are the group of 20 students and 3 lecturers and we require an accommodation of 5 double
bedrooms and 2 large deluxe rooms. It would be great if we can get rooms with attached
bathrooms and kitchens because some of our students prefer to cook for themselves.

Please let us know the availability of the accommodation in the mentioned period and booking
details if they are available.

Thank you in advance.

Yours faithfully,

John Miller
Model Answer 2:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to reserve accommodation in your hostel during our trip to the Snowy Mountains
in New South Wales. I am planning a trip for a group of students from Perth and expecting your
response so that I can finalise our stay at your hostel.

We expect to be in the Snowy Mountains between June 1st and depart on 9th June. Our group
has five men, seven women and a married couple - 14 in total. The five men can stay at a
dormitory and the women are happy to share rooms, but the married couple would like a
deluxe room. We hope to keep our expenses as low as possible. Besides, the rooms must have
hot water and room heater facilities considering the cold weather.

Please also inform me about the recreational services in the area. The group will bring their
own boots for bushwalking, but we are hoping to hire equipment for other sports, like skiing.
Some of our group members will hire geological picks and other equipment, if possible. We also
need to know about access to caves and other interesting geological features in the area.

I am looking forward to receiving information about the Student Hostel Services and other
facilities, specifically, if the accommodation would be available during the time of our visit and
if so, how can I reserve it well in advance.

Yours faithfully,

Adam Smith

6. You want to apply for the following job.

Waiter/ waitress required for evening work. Some experience would be necessary.

Write a letter to Mr Moore describing your previous experience and explaining why you
would be suitable for the job.(31)

Model Answer 1:

Dear Mr Moore,

I am writing in regards to the job opening that you have advertised recently for the post of a
waiter in your restaurant. I would like to apply for the position as my experience and personal
qualities would make me a deserving candidate for the job.
Currently, I am studying Hotel Management course at the Hilson University. I want to utilise my
summer holidays by working in an industry related to my studies. I have experience as a waiter
at a local restaurant and I worked there for more than six months. My responsibilities involved
taking orders and making sure that customers at my tables get their orders on time. Besides, I
handled customer complaints. In addition, I also worked as a bartender at a bar for three
months.

I am hard-working and punctual. All of my previous employers would be willing to give me a

good reference if needed. Also, I am quite flexible and able to do all sorts of tasks. And my
previous waiter experience would allow me to easily set in the vacancy at your restaurant.

Please spare some of your precious time to look at my resume which I am attaching with this
letter. I can meet you on a formal interview to further discuss my candidacy.

I look forward to meeting you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Sandeep Parekh

Model Answer 2:

Dear Mr Moore,

I am writing to express my interest in the position of a waitress in your hotel. I am enclosing my

resume, which further details my previous job experience and qualifications. I am hoping you
would consider my application and give me a chance to meet with you in a formal interview to
discuss further.

I have previous experience as a waitress in the Albatros hotel where I worked as a part-timer
for a year. Not only my qualifications and work experience make me a deserving candidate for
the job, my personality is well suited to working as a waitress in a hotel like yours.

I am a very friendly person and can quickly establish rapport with people of all ages. In my last
waitress job, I had over a dozen repeat customers each day. And, the fast-paced environment
of waiting on tables suits me well, because I thrive on working under pressure. In fact, my
former boss was surprised at both my incredible stamina and efficiency in dealing with
customers’ orders and requirements.

I would like to meet with you at your convenience, to discuss the possibility of working at your
hotel. I am available any time for a formal interview.

Thank you for your consideration of my application. I look forward to meeting you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Emmie Lawren

7. You have just spent a weekend at a friend’s house. When you returned home, you
discovered you have left a coat containing some belongings in his house.

Write a letter to your friend telling him that you left the coat. Tell him what the coat looks
like, where you think you left it and what was inside it. Make some suggestions about how to
get it back.(36)

Model Answer:

Dear Steven,

Thanks very much for a great weekend and I really enjoyed my time at your house. Please say
hello to Paula whose hospitality is unforgettable. I hope you both will be able to come and stay
with me sometime soon.

Regrettably, I left my new coat at your house, I probably left it on the hooks in the guest room.
Do you remember the black coat that I wore when I arrived at your house? It is a black tic
classic fit car coat that goes down to mid-thigh level. It has a zippered inner bib, a quilted lining,
three large buttons and side pockets on both sides. It's made of wool and nylon and I am sure
you will detect it as soon as you look at it.

I have left my wallet in the left pocket of the coat and the wallet contains my credit cards and
some cash. I also put my Samsung Galaxy tab and an important document in the right pocket of
it and this is really important for me. Laura will be in your town on Friday and I am hoping you
would be able to give her a call so that she can collect it from your house. I have given her your
phone number and she will be contacting you soon.
Thanks again for a magnificent weekend and I hope to see you soon.

Warm wishes,

Haksoon Paik

8. Last month you had an overseas holiday with some friends where you stayed at their
house. They have just sent you some holiday photos.

Write a letter to your friends. In your letter:

thank them for the holiday and the photos

explain why you didn’t write earlier

invite them to come and stay with you

Model Answer 1:

Dear David, James & Ethan,

Hope you all are doing great. I cannot express how much I enjoyed my time with you guys and
how terribly I miss those days. I received your letter yesterday and was quite surprised to find
some of the best pictures we took during our holiday in Singapore inside the envelope.

I guess this is the best opportunity to thank you for a great holiday and the fabulous pictures
that would remind me of a grand tour to Singapore. As soon as I got back to Australia, I got busy
with my thesis paper that I am supposed to submit before the end of the current semester. This
is my last semester at the university and I will be free for a while after that and I would love to
have you at my place.

Why don't you all come and visit me at the end of the December? I am sure we will have a
magnificent time together.

Stay fine and keep in touch.

Warm wishes,

Alex
Model Answer 2:

Dear Emma and Jenifer,

I cannot thank you enough for the hospitality you have shown me during my stay at your house.
Also, I am writing to say thanks for the great photos you have couriered me. I am hoping you
two would visit me during the summer vacation.

I was greatly surprised by the beauty of Venice, Italy and the days I spent with you, each day
was magical. The fabulous canals in Venice lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces were
heavenly. However, you two had been excellent hosts and I can never express how much I
enjoyed my time with you. A huge thank you for making my holidays special and sending some
of the very best photos we took during this holiday.

My apology for not writing to you earlier. I had been busy with office and I guess you already
know how sometimes I struggle to manage everything in my life. I had to travel to Brisbane
twice to meet my mom whose health condition is deteriorating these days.

I would love to have you both with me during the summer vacation. Please plan for the trip and
I am sure you will enjoy your time in Australia. Take care and stay fine.

Warm wishes,

Kelly

9. You ordered a new chequebook from your bank two weeks ago but you have received
nothing.

Write a letter to the manager complaining about the bad service. Say when and how you
ordered the chequebook. Ask how much longer you will have to wait and ask the manager
what action he will take over this matter.

Model Answer 1:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about the poor customer service that I have received from your bank
lately. Despite giving a chequebook requisition almost fifteen days ago, I am yet to receive it. I
have not got a proper response from the branch and I am hoping you would resolve it.

Two weeks ago I ordered a chequebook by filling out the request form when I visited the bank
in person. But neither have I got the chequebook nor have received any correspondence from
the bank. I urgently need the chequebook as I have a few bills that I need to pay by cheque. I
maintain a checking account with your Lockshire branch and my account number is CAA-
25478412354.

I am requesting a proper explanation for the delay and poor service. Please inform me how
much longer I will have to wait for my chequebook. I would also like to know what action you
are going to take regarding this bad service.

I have been a customer of your bank for more than fifteen years and this is the first time I have
had to complain. It is very disappointing.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Rocky Taylor

Model Answer 2:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I ordered a new chequebook for a savings account that I maintain with your bank. It has been
more than two weeks and I have not received it yet. I am writing to complain about this bad
service and hoping you would rectify that.

I have been maintaining the account in your branch for more than a decade and my account
number is 0012845181. Generally, the service offered by the bank is praiseworthy, but I cannot
say so this time. I placed a chequebook requisition on 14th January and I am still waiting to
receive it. I have some payments to make including a payment to my pension fund and I cannot
do so without the chequebook.

It usually takes 4-5 working days to receive a new chequebook and I am not sure why it is taking
so long this time. More surprisingly, when I called the bank the day before yesterday, I got no
reliable response. I, therefore, request you to look into this issue and give me a probable date
by which the chequebook would be delivered to my address.
Furthermore, I would like to get appraised about the reasonable action that would be initiated
from your end so as to reduce the possibility of reoccurrence of such a bad incident in the
future.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Mehra Niraj

10. You have a pen pal and you are writing your first letter to that pen pal. In your letter,
describe your previous studies and work experience, your current activities, hobbies and
interests. Also, tell your pen pal that you will be visiting him/her.(39)

Model Answer 1:

Dear David,

I hope you are doing great. I am so excited to be your pen pal and writing my first letter to
introduce myself. I hope you will write me some time as I would like to know more about you.

11. You have received a letter from your bank, asking you to acknowledge receipt of a new
bank card. However, the card was missing from the envelope.

Write a letter to the bank's head office. In your letter:

» explain why you are writing

» express concern about the missing card

» ask them what they intend to do(47)

Model Answer 1:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that I have recently received a letter from your bank, and an envelop
which was supposed to contain my new bank card. Unfortunately, no card was enclosed in the
envelope when I opened it. I am hoping that you would issue me another card and hold the
delivered one to stop any misuse.

I have been maintaining a savings bank account with your Deportaire branch since 2017 and my
account number is SA25874210. Immediately after the occurrence, I telephoned the bank to
explain the problem, but I could not get through to the right department, even though I waited
on the line for over half an hour, which was extremely annoying.

In the letter, you asked me to acknowledge the receipt of the card, but obviously, I cannot do
this as I have not received it. I am now worried because the lost card might cause trouble. What
if the card is misused? Will the bank be responsible for that?

You should cancel or hold this card so no one else can use it. Please also send me a new card by
secure means.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Beck Turner
Sample Answer 2:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that I was delivered an empty envelope which was supposed to carry
my debit card issued by the Northshire branch of your City Bank. Since I have not received any
card, I can not acknowledge its acquisition. I am hoping you would investigate how this
happened and issue me a new card. Also, take measured to stop any misuse of the lost card.

I have been maintaining a checking account with your Lordshire branch since 2016 and my
account number is CKL- 54785120145. Recently, I requested a new silver debit card and when I
opened the envelope yesterday, I noticed that the card was missing! Now I am concerned
about the whereabouts of the card. If it goes to the wrong hand, it might be misused. To stop
such an incident, please stop the issued card as soon as possible.

I would like you to investigate the reason for such an unexpected incident. Also, issue me a
similar new card and this time allow me to fetch it from my branch instead of sending it via a
courier.

Thank you in advance and I would like to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Alex Ryan

12. You live in a flat and you have a tenancy agreement which states that you must give three
months' notice when you wish to leave. You have paid a deposit of two months' rent. Now a
member of your family has a problem and you need to give up your flat and return home as
soon as possible.

Write a letter to your landlady. Explain your circumstances, tell her what you intend to do
and ask her for special consideration.(48)

Model Answer:

Dear Mr Milan,

I am a tenant of your apartment D#4 in the Birmingham Garden street. I am writing to ask a
favour from you due to a family emergency and I need to vacate your flat next month - 30th
December 2018, to be exact.
I have signed an agreement while moving into your flat which bounds me to notify you three
months prior to empty the flat. I have always respected the contract and paid my rent on time.
During my 11 months' stay at your falt, I have never asked your favour but this time I am relying
on your kind consideration. My elder brother, who looks after our family business, has been
diagnosed with a serious disease and has been transferred to a hospital in Manhattan. My
family needs me to look after the business and be with them right now.

The circumstance has forced me to give up the training programme that I am pursuing and
return home immediately. I have decided to leave England and return my home country on 2nd
December 2018.

I, therefore, request you to consider my situation and permit me to vacate your flat on a
month's notice. I have already paid two month's rent in advance and would request you to
return me a month's rent which is £750. I have always known you as a benevolent person and
would not have requested your favour otherwise.

Yours sincerely,

David Sergel

13. A friend has agreed to look after your house and pet while you are on holiday. Write a
letter to your friend.

In your letter:

 give contact details for when you are away

 give instructions on how to care for your pet
 describe other household duties(56)

Sample Answer 1:

Dear Ema,

Thank you for agreeing to house-sit for me. It was a great relief when you agreed to take up the
responsibilities. I would like to thank you for that and inform some of the chores you should
take care of.

If you need to contact me for any reason during my holiday in Thailand, please ring my mobile
phone. I’ve written the numbers on a sticky note which I’ve left on the fridge. I will stay at the
Mandarin Oriental Bangkok hotel and if I change my hotel, I will inform you of that.
Alternatively, you can message me on WhatsApp or Imo.

My cat needs to be fed twice daily so each morning and evening put a handful of cat food in his
dish. You will find these in the kitchen pantry. Also, please check throughout the day to make
sure he has fresh water. You can give him a small bowl of milk in the evening.

I would like you to water my plants, too. The indoor ones in the lounge only need water once
every few days but the plants on the balcony need to be watered daily unless there has been
heavy rain. Finally, for security, please clear my mailbox every day and keep the outside lights
on at night.

I look forward to seeing you on my return.

Warm wishes,

Sophia

Model Answer 2:

Dear Sam,

I feel so relieved as you have stepped up to take care of my place and my dog when I plan to go
on a vacation. I can't thank you enough. To be honest, I was really hoping that you would
respond to my request when I posted it on Facebook.

I understand that taking care of new stuff can be overwhelming. If you need to reach me for
anything while I am away, just send a message either on WhatsApp or on Facebook Messenger.
I was told by the resort in which I shall be staying, uninterrupted internet access is available
there. My mobile phone, however, will remain switched off. If not, I will keep on receiving calls
from work which will ultimately defeat the purpose of this getaway.

As for Tommy, the dog, he doesn't really need much care. Just ensure that he gets 3 meals a
day at 6-8 hour interval. Also, let him be outside in the evening whenever possible so that he
can play with the ball. Also, don't forget to bathe him preferably every other day so that he
doesn't stink.

I know that you will not stay at my house full time so there aren't many chores that you need to
do. Some small things like emptying the trash can, cleaning the parking area and watering the
plants need to be done regularly.
Once again, I really appreciate the help you are extending to me and hope to return this favour
sometime.

Best regards,

Rouhullah

14. You and your family are planning to spend a weekend at a seaside hotel.

Write a letter to the hotel for making the arrangement. Let them know:

 when you will be arriving and leaving

 what type of rooms you would like and ask how much the weekend will cost
 inquire about activities and places of interest near the hotel

Model Answer 1:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to you to make the necessary arrangements for our stay at your hotel on 22nd and
23rd November. I will travel with my parents, wife and 7 years old son. I am hoping that you
would be able to provide us with suitable accommodation and assist us to enjoy our trip.

We will arrive on 22nd November and check out from your hotel on 24th November before
12.00 pm. We are expecting two double size bedrooms with attached bathrooms, hot water
and air cooler facilities. We would prefer rooms with the sea view and room service. I would
really appreciate if the rooms are on the same floor.

I am also interested to know about recreational activities in the vicinity. Despite my parent’s
age, they are very lively and would love to go to the theatre, beach and amusement parks, if
available. I would also like to know about a market, where we can buy traditional items and
souvenirs.

Please notify me of the cost that will incur on our trip at your earliest with the facilities you can
offer. I am expecting a comprehensive reply from your side about the details of activities and
other information I requested.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Fahad Sultan

Sample Answer 2:
Dear Sir or Madam,

I am planning to spend a weekend with my family at your hotel and would like to request you
to make the necessary arrangements for us. My wife and my daughter will accompany me and I
hope you can arrange a large deluxe room for us from 14th July to 16th July. I am hoping that
you would inform me of the availability of the room with a few other details at your earliest.

We will be arriving on Thursday, 14th July at around 3:00 pm. We will spend the weekend and
will check-out from the hotel on Saturday- 17th July, before 11.30 am. Please make sure that
the room has a balcony, attached bathroom and air cooler and offers a sea view. Not to
mention, the room should be large and adequately furnished.

Kindly let me know the cost of spending the weekend at your hotel for the mentioned dates.
Also, advise if you have any weekend package for the families.

We will be visiting the place for the first time, so I would appreciate if you could inform us
about the places worth visiting.

15. You are looking for a full-time job and recently you saw a job opening in an
advertisement.

Write a letter to an employment agency. In your letter:

 introduce yourself
 explain what sort of job you would like to get
 and say what experience and skills you have

Model Answer 1:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the assistant manager post in your Hotel - The Adventure Inn, that you
have advertised in a local newspaper recently. I would really appreciate if you could spare some
of your precious time to further discuss my candidacy in a formal interview.
I would like to work as an assistant manager that would enable me to work closely with the
hotel staffs and with the management. This way, I would be able to best serve my position on
the one hand and learn valuable experience on the other hand.

I have completed my graduation from the City University in 2014 and my major was Tourism
and Hospitality. Afterwards, I have worked for two four-star hotels and my current job as an
assistant manager at the Gilbert hotel makes me a suitable candidate for the post. I do not see
enough career growth opportunity with my current employer and that's why would like to
switch my job.

I look forward to hearing from you soon. Should you need any further details, please do not
hesitate to call me.

Yours sincerely,

Paul Jenkins

Dear Sir or Madam,

and assignment that I submitted to the course coordinator to complete a presentation skill
course I undertook at the Sydney College of Australia. I am hoping you would arrange to send
me those copies as I need them urgently.

I completed the course on 18th March 2018 under the supervision of Mr Alfred and had my

forward these papers and this is why I need these documents urgently.

I had an email correspondence with Mr Alfred, my course coordinator, and he suggested me to

contact you for those papers. I would request you to forward these documents to my address
as soon as possible. Kindly inform me if there is any charge for the second copy of these
documents. If there is any, I would be ready to pay for that.

I would really appreciate your cooperation and kind response.

Write a letter to your friend. In your letter, explain -

 why you are selling the television

 describe the television
 suggest a date when your friend can come and see it

Sample Answer 1:

Dear Rabbi,

Hope you are doing well. I have recently got a job offer in New York and I am excited about it. I
am planning to leave next month and would like to meet you sometime before my departure. I
have decided not to ship my furniture to my destination. Instead, I want to sell them off. I think
you might be interested to purchase my smart TV.

The TV I own is an ultra slim Samsung LED television and I purchased it around 6 months ago. It
still has a warranty for 1 and a half years. I brought it from a branded Samsung showroom and it
is a 43 inch Android TV. The outstanding features of this TV are 3-Dimensional view (3D), smart
internet connection, latest Android OS, 256 GB internal memory, 10 years picture panel
warranty and voice activation.

I believe you would be interested to have this TV, however, I advise you to have a clear
demonstration of the functional and operational procedures of it. you can come to check it out
next weekend, Saturday, 28th March. We can also negotiate on the price at the same time.

Kindly reply me with your thoughts on buying this television.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Warm wishes,

18. You eat in your college cafeteria everyday lunchtime. However, you think it needs some
improvements.

Write a letter to the college magazine. In your letter

 explain what you like about the cafeteria

 say what is wrong with it
 suggest how it could be improved

Sample Answer:

Dear Ms Margaret,

I have decided to write this letter to inform you of a few personal ideas that I have about our
college cafeteria. As a regular customer, I would like to take the opportunity to express my
gratitude to the people behind this cafe and I also believe some improvements would make it
even more attractive. I am hoping that you would publish my ideas in your college magazine.

I personally feel that our college cafeteria has a great environment and offers delicious and
healthy food. I appreciate the hard work of all the chefs and management for their attempt to
serve meals to the students who are sometimes fussy and hard to please. The management is
in fact, doing an excellent job.

However, many students, including I, feel that the food served in the cafeteria is expensive. Our
canteen charges $15-$20 for lunch and this is considerably higher. A few other college canteens
in our city charges less than that.

It appears that students will soon make an inevitable choice to eat outside the campus due to
the high price. As an individual who would love to continue eating fantastic food at our central
eatery, I would like to suggest you publish an article about this issue. I hope this will help the
canteen management become aware of how we think about their food price.

If you have any further questions about this, please let me know.

Yours faithfully,

Kay Lim
19. You have received an important document that needs to be translated. Write a letter to
your friend and ask him/her to translate this important document for you.

In your letter, explain -

 how fast you need it back
 why you need his/her expertise

Model Answer:

Dear Lee,

Hope you and your parents are doing excellent. I am sorry that I have not been in touch with
you for the last couple of weeks. Even if I have not written to you for a while, you are always in
my thoughts and prayer. I am writing to you today because I need your expertise to translate
some important documents for me.

You would be glad to know that my application has been accepted by the Wuhan University in
China and if things go as planned, I will join the university next summer for my Master's degree.
They have sent me some documents which are in Chinese language and I need your help on
that. You are the best person to assist me and this is really crucial for me to get admitted to this
University. Without the proper translation of the documents, I will not be able to respond
precisely to them.

I am sending xerox copies of these documents, three documents with 7 pages in total, and
would really appreciate if you can send them before 10th December. I could use Google
Translate to interpret the texts but you know there are always glitches in this technology as
some meanings are lost in translation! Your excellent skills in English and Chinese makes you
the most suitable person to translate those documents for me. I owe you a big one.

Take care and write me back whenever possible.

Warm wishes,

Kyle

Dear Mr Patrick,

I am a cadet in your community-based rehabilitation team and I have been with this group
since 2015. I regret to inform you that I will not be able to continue with your organisation
effective from 1st December 2018 as I am leaving for my home country once and for all.

It has been a wonderful journey for me so far. I was predominantly working with the
rehabilitation team, assisting the medical panel of experts as a volunteer doctor. My duties
mainly comprised of the initial assessment of patients, who are from the indigent part of our
local community. The assessment mainly included monitoring the physical, social and emotional
wellness of them.

As you may remember, I was pursuing my postgraduation at Boston University. Now that my
study permit has expired, I am preparing to leave for my home country in a couple of weeks.
Henceforth, can no longer work for the team I had been a part of.

However, it would be my pleasure, to introduce one of my junior in college, who is willing to

take over my position in the team. Now, the whole charade of recruitment of a new employee,
the prerequisites and all, as intended, I leave it upon you. His name is Jackson Dave and he will
be in contact with you soon.

Once again, I would take this opportunity to thank everyone who stood beside me during my
tenure with the group. I wish every success of the organisation.

Sincerely yours,
Jane Smith

What is your motivation to learn a new language?

How can the teacher help you?

23. Write a letter to your college’s administration department complaining about the
college’s facilities.

In your letter include:

what the problem is

how this problem has affected you

what the college should do to fix this problem

Model Answer 1:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a third-year accounting major student in your college and I am writing to you regarding a
problem that I have encountered several times over the past few weeks in our football ground.
I am hoping that you would take steps to solve the matter immediately.

In relation to the issue, our football team is preparing for the upcoming competition against FC
College, and the training is very hard - both mentally and physically. Hence we sometimes get
very lethargic towards the end of our training sessions. But I am extremely alarmed at the fact
that the faucet at the ground appears to be out of order, therefore, my teammates and I can’t
quench our thirsts during and after the practice. Because of this, I suffered from dehydration a
few days ago and had to be rushed to the hospital.

My intention in writing this letter to you is to ask a working condition faucet for drinking water
so that we can carry on our practice sessions without risking our health.

Expecting your kind attention and prompt action regarding this.

Yours sincerely,

Sameed Qureshi

24. You are studying overseas. You need to return to your country before the end of the
semester for a family event.

Write a letter to your supervisor. In your letter

- request time off

- explain why you need to leave early

- reassure him/her that your studies will not suffer

Model Answer 1:

Dear Mr Joseph,

I am a student at your university and my major is finance. I need to visit my home country
owing to my sister's marriage ceremony on 22nd November 2018. I am hoping that you would
permit me to take a week's leave from 17th to 23rd November.

Inevitably, being the only brother of the bride-to-be, shopping and some important rituals are
to be taken care of by me and therefore my family members and relatives are expecting me to
arrive a little earlier. I am quite aware that I have my semester exams on 15th December and I
assure you that my travel would no way affect my studies. In fact, I have prepared all the
subjects well in advance so I could succeed in the assessment tests with good scores.

I would be grateful if you could approve my leave and pray for my sister.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Nivetha Roy

25. A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the
morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Write a letter to your relative. In your letter:

 explain the arrangements you have made for him/her to get keys and enter the house
 tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
 say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening

Model Answer:

Dear Samir,

Hope you are doing great. I cannot find fitting words to express how excited I am to hear that
you will be visiting me next week. I am very much looking forward to having you and spending
some quality time together.
Unfortunately, on 7th June, the day of your arrival, I have an important meeting in my office
and I am expected there early in the morning. I wish I could have been at the train station to
receive you. However, do not worry, I will keep the keys to my neighbour, George. He lives in
the opposite apartment- B2, and will be expecting you at around 9.30 am. Just tell him that you
are my cousin Samir and he will hand over you the keys.

From the train station, you can hail a taxi and give him my apartment's address. He will do the
rest as the address is quite familiar to taxi drivers. The rent should be anything between 15 to
20 pounds.

I will be back at 6.30 pm and will take you to dinner at one of my favourite restaurants.
Afterwards, we can walk for a few minutes and meet aunt Lucy who lives nearby.

I have so many things to share with you and I plan to do many exciting things together -just like
in our childhood. Wishing you a safe journey.

Best wishes,

James
