REFLECTION

Last meeting, September 6, 2019 we started our discussion through a 'Bring Me' game
where groups brought the specific thing to our professor and we stated the brand name of that
certain thing. That game is connected to the topic discussed about quality. There are several
topics discussed such as: the meaning of TQM from different sources and authors, features of
TQM, definition of quality and its dimensions, cost of quality and its types and lastly, the
evolution of TQM. Above all the meaning discussed about TQM, my favorite was the meaning
from Oxford Dictionary which quantity means the 'degree of excellence'. This phrase
encompasses everything; when we say excellence it means the product touches or exceeds the
standards and expactations to satisfy the customers. After that, we discussed how companies
produce quality products through a diagram composed by the following: product, technology
(processes), parts, people (experts), and the cost/finance. We also discussed the two features of
TQM namely: (1) manufacturing product which focuses on the tangible product features and (2)
service product features which focuses on the intangible features that must be experienced.
Then, we discussed the costs of quality and its' four types. In this topic I realized that it is really
hard to establish business especially in manufacturing industry because it costs a lot- costs for
every damage goods, damaged materials, returns and etc. And lastly, we learned about that the
TQM before is totally different from today. In early 1900s the products were evaluated after
production like inspection and statistical sampling. Unlike to the TQM today, the evaluation is
conducted during the production such as customer-driven quality.
Overall, even our group did not win it was a fruitfull and fun discussion and I am
looking forward for more games in our next meetings.
