INTRODUCTION

Indian Railways being world’s second largest railway network

committed in safe and secured transporting of passengers and goods,
contributing maximum to Indian economy.
As a Guard we have a vital role in this great task in running the
train safe and prevention of untoward incidents.
Hot Axle and brake Bindings are some of such untoward
incidents that we directly come across in day to day working.

HOT AXLE

AS PER SR 4.29 (iii)

Hot Axle is a dangerous condition prevailing in a vehicle which
may lead to derailment at any moment and hence treated as an
Accident Situation. It is indicative of impending derailment. So when
a running train is noticed with symptoms of hot Axle, the train shall
be brought to stop immediately.

CAUSE OF HOT AXLE

Due to material defect over loading (Especially in case of Goods
Train) and aging these bearings get damaged slowly such bearings
develops large amount of heat while on run and in turn damage the
Axle which may leads to major accidents such as derailment (or) fire
on train etc.
SYMPTOMS OF HOT AXLE

 Emission of Smoke / Flame from the

Axle Box
 Splashing of Grease around Axle Box
 Smell or Burning Grease
 Peeling paint around Axle Box
 Unusual metallic sound
 Skidding of Wheels, etc.
 Red Hot Glow in Axle Box
 Broken and Bulged Axle Cover

ACTION TO BE TAKEN BY RAILWAY STAFF DURING HOT

AXLE ON RUN

o If Hot Axle is noticed by any Railway Staff, he shall show Hot

Axle signal as follows:
‘Waving a Red Flag/Light (during day/night) in a wide Arc manner
from left to right across the chest’.
o If LP does not notice the Hot Axle Signal shown by Station
Staff, SM shall put back LSS to Danger.
o If the train has already passed the LSS, SM shall inform
Gateman of LC, if any to show Hot Axle signal to stop train
o In electrified area,
 SM informs the TPC to switch off power supply and
inform controller.
 If there is no tension in OHE for more than 3
minutes, GD and Loco pilot shall check the
formation.
o If the train could not be stopped, SM informs the SM in
advance.
IN DOUBLE LINE SECTIONS
When advised by the SM, LP shall proceed continuously at a
reasonable speed in such a manner that he can always stop short of an
obstruction caused due to derailment of hot Axle train on adjacent
line.

IF HOT AXLE IS NOTICED ON THE RUN BY LP AND GUARD

 Train shall be stopped immediately.

 Guard on noticing hot Axle or hot Axle heard signal shall stop
the train by attracting attention of LP as per GR/SR 4.45 till
such time the train is stopped.

 The Guard may use Walkie talkie and CUG phones if supplied for
alerting the nearby station SMs and section controller.

 In electrified area in the case the train could not be stopped Guards
may contact section control or TPC through CUG phones it
supplied and advise to switch off the OHE power.

 Vehicle shall be examined by the LP and Guard.

 If it safe, Block Section shall be cleared.
 Speed shall not exceed 5 Kmph.

RECEPTION OF A TRAIN WITH HOT AXLE

 Train shall be stopped at FSS

 SM shall inform LP by issuing of a memo
 LP and Guard shall check the particular vehicle with Hot Axle
 If it is safe, train shall be received on main line.
 Speed shall not exceed 5 Kmph
 If main line is occupied, train shall be received on the first
unavoidable turnout.
THE ROLE OF GUARD IN EARLY DETECTION OF HOT AXLE

 The Guard shall have a sharp lookout on his train throughout the
run, especially over curves and cuttings.
 During “GDLP check” lookout for any Hot Axle symptoms like
Warm Axle Box, Axle Box Fasteners/ Cover Missing, Oozing
out of grease etc.,
 Be vigilant for any such hand signals shown by Gateman,
Gang man, SM or any other Railway Employees while on run.
 Report such accident class J.

CASE STUDY – 1

Train – Temp / N Goods

Section – JTJ – KEY in SA Division
How detected – Noticed by Guard
Temp / N Goods while passing TPT Station, the Guard of the train
noticed heavy smoke from a wheel of a vehicle in the formation.
Immediately he attracted the attention of LP in accordance with a
GR / SR 4.45 and stopped the train. On examination by Guard and LP
found the Axle Box was in Warm condition. On consulting with LP
the train was backed to TPT station on the main line at a speed less
than 5 Kmph. On C&W examination it is found Hot Axle prevailing
in the wagon.
The timely action of the Guard had averted a impending
accident and major delay.
CASE STUDY – 2
Train – BCN / Goods
Section – GYM – VLT in MAS Division
How detected – Noticed by Guard
BCN Goods after passing GYM station and negotiating a curve the
Guard of the train noticed smokes along with flame in one of the
wheels of a vehicle in the formation. Immediately he attracted the
attention of LP in accordance with a GR / SR 4.45 and stopped the
train. On examination by Guard and LP found the Axle Box was in
Very Hot Condition with Fire and Smoke Emitting. On consulting
with LP the train was backed to GYM station on the main line at a
speed less than 5 Kmph. On C&W examination it is found Hot Axle
prevailing in the wagon.
The timely action of the Guard had averted a impending
accident and major delay.

SUGGESTION

Thermo hunters may be provided along with BPSE apparatus in the

station which may alert the SM regarding the presence of Hot Axle or
any heat developed in the undergear of the passing vehicles.
BRAKE BINDING

It is the continuous application of Brake on one or more vehicles on

run even after releasing the Brakes by LP. In other words, some
wheels does not rotate freely and skid on track.
While attending some Bindings are released easily where as
some other Bindings resulted in more repercussions and detention is
there by loosing punctuality and causing unscheduled maintenance.

IDENTIFYING BRAKE BINDING

 While Starting, train does not move even after LP apply notches.
 Unusual jerk while running.
 Smoke in the brake block.
 Raise in temperature and emmition of smoke and spark from the
affected wheel.
 Unused sound due to the Binding of wheels by Brake blocks.
 Skidding of wheels on rails

CAUSES OF BRAKE BINDING

 Problem in pneumatic system.

 Defective distributor Valve.
 Jamming of brake cylinder piston.
 Hand brake in applied condition or not fully released.
 Not releasing or improper releasing of formation manually
during the time of loco change and ETR.
 Insufficient releasing time after an emergency application of
Brakes.
 In goods vehicles if empty / load handle are not at relevant
position.
 When moist air not drained in MR in the loco.
 While on run stone hitting DV handle or any other handle of AR
may also result in droppage of pressure and causing Brake
Binding.

EFFECTS OF BRAKE BINDINGS

 Damages the tracks and wheel bearings.

 Since wheel movement is affected it causes flat tyre in the
vehicle.
 May result in Train Parting.
 It leads to detention to traffic.
 Also, leads to more power / fuel consumptions.

THE ROLE OF GUARD IN EARLY DETECTION OF BRAKE

BINDINGS

 The Guard shall have a sharp lookout on his train throughout the
run, especially over curves and cuttings.
 Whenever the Brake Bindings is noticed the train shall be stopped at
earliest convenient place.
 The Guard and LP shall check the formations for any raise in
temperature or smoke from any wheel and Brake block to identify
the particular vehicle with Brake Binding.

 Try to release the Binding of that particular Brake cylinder or truck.

 If unsuccessful isolate the DV or truck.

PROCEDURE TO ATTEND BRAKE BINDING – LHB COACHES

 If Brake Indicator is in RED color Brakes are in applied

condition, which means Brake binding has taken place in that
particular Bogie.

 Pull the release lever of DV

 If the Brakes are not released, Rotate the Bogie isolation Cock
W/vent of the affected Bogie provided on the Brake panel in
anticlockwise direction by 90 degree to release and isolate the
Brake cylinders of the affected bogie.

 If Brakes are released Brake Indicator of the affected bogie will

change color from RED to GREEN.
 Check that the Brakes are released by shaking the Brake
calipers.

 If the Brake pads are still tight, Tighten the nut of the affected
disc brake cylinder by double end spanner.

 Ensure the brake pads are slack and start the train.

CASE STUDY

Train – 12601
Section – DPI – MAP in SA Division
How detected – Noticed by Guard
Train No: 12601 while passing section DPI & MAP in SA Division,
the Guard of the train noticed Smoke and Fire Sparks with a Burning
Smell in the wheels of a Coach in the middle of the formation.
Immediately he attracted the attention of LP in accordance with a
GR / SR 4.45 and stopped the train. On examination by Guard and LP
found that DV Valve of the tenth coach from rear was partially closed
due to stone hit from underneath and resulted in droppage of pressure
causing Brake Bindings. DV Handle was put back to normal position
and the train was started at the earliest.
The timely action of the Guard had averted a major discrepancy
and delay.

OTHER ROLLING STOCK DEFECTS

Carriage and wagons are always subjected to linear and transverse

forces, wear and tear; many types of defects can develop in the
components of Rolling Stock. Common defects are:

 Flat Tyre

 Running Gear Defects

 Spring Gear Defects

 Draw Gear Defects

 Buffing Gear Defects

 Brake Gear Defects

 Body and Other Defects

 BP/FP hose pipe burst

 Knuckle broken

 BP/FP hose pipe burst or unable to connect due to palm end

damage etc.
Use spare hose pipe available in the Brake van/loco. If not
available replace from the rear most vehicles.
 BP pressure dropping due to leakage in pipe connection in a
particular vehicle.
Try to attend by bandaging the line/connection, if unable
to attend, bye pass the coach using a BP-FP palm coupler.

 Knuckle Broken –
Change the Knuckle from rearmost end coupling.

CONCLUSION

By the introduction of Modern Coaches like LHB Coaches, Brake

Binding, Hot Axle and other Rolling Stock Defects are considerably
reduced. Due to advancement in Technology, compared to
conventional type coaches, Fault identification and Rectification has
been simplified. Detention is also minimized duly ensuring Safety.
