COURSE TITLE: DESIGN OF STRUCTURES I

UNITS: 2 (L2 T0 P3)

A. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course studies fundamentals of design process, materials selection, building regulations and

codes of practice. Design philosophy with regards to elastic, load factors and limit state methods.

Design and detailing of structural elements (slab, beam, column, stair and footings) in reinforced

concrete. Shear bond and anchorage considerations. Bar bending schedule. Studio works on

practical designs.

B. AIMS:

The aim of this course is to provide students with a thorough understanding of the design of

reinforced concrete structures. Also to prepare students for the effective use of the latest industry

standard formulas, tables, design aids and computer software in the design of reinforced concrete

members.

C. COMPLIANCE WITH CORE VALUES

Design of Structures I is a very important course in Civil Engineering. It is designed to enhance

the mental capacity of the student on the application of fundamental mechanics to the design of

reinforced concrete members at the serviceability and ultimate limit state according to the design

approach of BS standard. Knowledge of this course will make students to be self employed by

serving as consultant to the building and construction industries.

D. COURSE APPLICATION

The course enables students to generate safe, economical and robust designs of reinforced concrete

structures. It provides a link between theory and day-to-day design practice, using theory to derive

solutions that are applicable to specific structures and structural details used in building and

construction industries.

Week 4: Design of doubly reinforced beam

Week 5: Design for shear and deflection in beam

Week 6: Design of simply supported and continuous slab

Week 7: Design of two-way spanning slab

Week 8: Mid Semester Examination

Week 9: Design of staircase

Week 10: Design of compression members (short and slender columns)

Week 11: Design of column under axial, uniaxial and biaxial bending.

Week 12: Design of single footing

Week 13: Design of combined footing

Week 14: Bar bending schedule

Week 15: Tutorials, Revision and Evaluation

G. STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME / METHOD OF GRADING

I. TOPICS FOR TERM PAPERS/ASSIGNMENTS/STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES

 Explain the three (3) major design philosophy of reinforced concrete and highlight four (4)
assumptions in the theory of reinforced concrete structures.
 State three (3) advantages of reinforced concrete structures and three (3) functional

objectives that must be satisfied by reinforced concrete design.

 Design the longitudinal reinforcement for a 300mm square column which supports an axial

load of 1700kN at the ultimate limit state. The characteristic material strengths arefcu =

30N/mm2 and fy= 460N/mm2.

 A footing is required to resist characteristic axial load of 1000KN dead and 350KN

imposed from a 400mm square column. The safe bearing pressure of the soil is 200KN/m2

and the characteristic material strengths are fcu = 35N/mm2 and fy= 460N/mm2. Assuming

a footing weight of 150KN, design the footing.

 A column section has the following dimensions: b = 300mm, b1 = 60mm, h = 360mm, h1

= 70mm. It is to be designed to resist an ultimate axial load of 1200kN plus moments of

Mxx = 75kNm and Myy = 80kNm. The characteristic material strengths are fcu = 30N/mm2

and fy= 460N/mm2. Design the column section for biaxial bending.

 Carry out the structural calculations for a complete single storey building.

K. INDUSTRIAL RELEVANCE

This course find its relevance in building and construction industries. It is a core course to

understanding the basic rudiment of structural design of reinforced concrete structures. It provides

a link between theory and day-to-day design practice, using theory to derive solutions that are

applicable to specific structures and structural details used in building and construction industries.
