Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: A 9th Grade Feature Prezitation

Content Area: Algebra I
Grade Level(s): 9
Content Standard Addressed: Building Functions

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE Standard 5a: Students formulate problem definitions suited for
technology-assisted methods such as data analysis, abstract models and algorithmic thinking in
exploring and finding solutions. ISTE Standard 5b: Students collect data or identify relevant data sets,
use digital tools to analyze them, and represent data in various ways to facilitate problem-solving and
decision-making.

Selected Technology Tool: Prezi

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Prezi is a technology tool that can be used to support all learners.
Prezi is an online presentation software that allows the user to create or view presentations. This tool
can be used to create a visual alternative to standard note-taking and different prezis can be created to
support different students. For example, a student with visual impairments could be given a
presentation that has enlarged text or pictures instead of standard sized text. Using Prezi also gives
students the ability to use a web-based application for representing functions instead of manually
writing them out. The product students create, collaboratively or independently, are authentic and able
to be shared with others.

Lesson idea implementation: For this activity students will be using Prezi to create a presentation that
demonstrates their knowledge of building functions. The project will be introduced at the end of the
unit and should take two fifty-minute class periods to complete. The teacher will spend 5 minutes
going over the basic functionality of Prezi and how to save, edit, and publish on the site, as well as a
rubric for assessing the final product . After that the teacher is monitoring student work, making sure
the students stay on task, and answering questions related to Prezi. Student learning will be assessed
by their final product and the requirements of the rubric.
The final product is a presentation that highlights the key components of a function and how each
component is translated graphically. Instead of a standard review sheet, students will have a final
product which, when done well, can serve as a resource for studying. Student learning is brought to a
higher level by having them analyze components of a function and then translating the numerical
values into a graph. The lesson will end with a whole-class question and response. The teacher will
have a graph displayed and will point to different components and have students tell the teacher which

component it is. Individual feedback for each presentation will be given back to students with their
graded rubric.

Reflective Practice: The activity could help students understand what parts make up a function and how
to construct a graph from a numerical representation. Another productivity tool that could enhance the
project is Desmos. Students could create graphs in Desmos to put into their presentations and play
around with the make-up of a function to further illustrate the individual components role.
