Global Divides: The North and The South

The North–South divide - is a global socio-economic and political divide originating in the late 20th
century and early 21st century.

The Brandt Line - is an imaginary division that has provided a rough way of dividing all of the countries
in the world in to the rich north and poor south. Many countries in the poor south have become more
developed since the 1980s and so many people now think that the Brandt line is no longer useful.

The North The South

North America, Western Europe, Australia, and Africa, Latin America, and Asia
Japan

Known as First World Poor and less developed region

Home to four out of five permanent members of 5% of the population has enough food and shelter
United Nations Security Council

Richer and developed region It serves as a source of raw material for the North

95% has enough food and shelter and functional

educational system as well

The Global South: Zone of Turmoil

*Many of the people in the global south faces poverty, war and tyranny.

*Great diversity in size, form of government and level of economic development (e.g., Qatar), but
generally former Global North colonies.

*Many global south countries lack well-developed domestic market economies based on
entrepreneurship and private enterprise.

*Global South countries have been unable to evolve an indigenous technology appropriate to their own
resources and have been dependent on powerful Global North multinational corporations (MNCs) to
transfer technical know-how.

* Life is a struggle for those who live in extreme poverty.

*Poverty is a force that robs your confidence steals your pride, deadens your ambition, limits your
imagination and psychologically cripples, (Mazumdar, 2009).

The North-South gap - Term used to describe the economic gap between the rich norther country and
the poor southern country.
During cold war - Primary global division was between West ans East, and predicated upon security and
power balance.

After Cold War - Many see primary global division as being between North and South, and predicated
upon economic inequality.
