SPA5304 Physical Dynamics Homework 4: (20 Marks)
Only one of the problems will be marked, so please solve all three.
(i) The Lagrangian for the system of a particle of mass µ moving in three dimensions subject to a central
force is given in the spherical coordinate system (r, θ, φ) as
µ 2
L= (ṙ + r2 θ̇2 + r2 sin2 θ φ̇2 ) − V (r).
2
Write down the expression for the generalized momenta pr , pθ and pφ conjugate to r, θ and ϕ, respec-
tively. Show that pφ is conserved. [5]
(ii) State how many degrees of freedom the following systems have, and in each case indicate, using a
diagram, appropriate generalised coordinates which can be used to describe the motion. (You cannot
just say that the generalised coordinates are “x”, “θ” etc. You should indicate what they are in the
diagram.)

Problem 2 [20 marks]
A conservative mechanical system consists of a mass m that is constrained to move along a circle of
radius R. The centre of the circle is at the origin O of the coordinate system. The mass is connected to a
point A along the x̂-axis at a distance 2R from the centre of circle with a spring of elastic constant k, so that
the corresponding elastic potential has the form Vspring = (k/2)d2 , where d is the (varying) distance between
the mass and point A. Gravity acts, as usual, along the vertical direction. See the figure for a depiction of
the system.
(i) How many degrees of freedom does the system have? Indicate generalised coordinates to describe the
motion of the system. [3]
(iv) Find the equilibrium positions of the system and discuss their stability. [5]
2
Problem 3 [20 marks]
A simple pendulum of mass m and length l is suspended from a point which moves around a circle of radius
R according to the law x(t) = R cos at, y(t) = R sin at, where a is a constant. The circle is on a vertical
plane, and gravity acts along the vertical y direction as usual (see Figure 2).
(i) How many degrees of freedom does the system have? [2]
(iv) Calculate the angular momentum of the mass about the centre of the circle. [6]
