Well actually, our poor performance is more due to the companies that sell the standardized tests,
which require an immense amount of memorization and not a lot of critical thinking. Also the
administrators and teachers unions that block any positive changes to the way they teach. Union
leadership are more like communists than leaders that want to actually improve student thinking
processes. These leaders are supposed to be highly intelligent, but looking back at the last 4 to 5
decades it is hard to tell!!!

How to Build a Better Math Foundation with CTC Math - KidMinds

[…] The Pew Research Center found that 42 percent of Americans disliked math in school. “A 2012
study comparing 16-to-65-year-olds in 20 countries found that Americans rank in the bottom five in
numeracy. They could do basic arithmetic but not computations requiring two or more steps.” Only 2
percent of American teenagers can develop “models for complex situations, and work strategically
using broad, well- developed thinking and reasoning skills” (compared to 31 in Shanghai). And when
it comes to 15-year-olds, not only do they rank below average in math among the world’s most
developed countries, but the results also showed… Read more »

Hard choices indeed. Ignore the education ranking & a nation risks dropping its education standards.
Improving/Changing education system is a “delicate operation”. A butcher is unlikely to bring much benefit
to a patient in need of hip/heart/spine surgery. What’s the likely consequences if a nation is
unable/unwilling to keep up its education standard? For one, once a nation drops below 400 (or in the
lower 25 percentile) for an extended period (> 30 years), it’s economy/wealth &/or security/health (i.e.
living standard) is likely to decline/stagnant. Such is the price of a weak/poor/low standard in education. If
it is below 500… Read more »

India participated in 2009, came in at bottom 4 and then didnt participate till 2018. Indians find it hard
to accept that they scored poorly in education. Instead of focusing on improving the education, the
politicians focused on finding faults with the PISA test. One of the reasons India fared poorly is the
test does NOT focus on memorised answers which is the main focus of the Indian education system.
