“Going to” and present continuous: future tenses

1 – Going to:

“Going to” é usado para indicar algo que, ao que parece, acontecerá.

- Look at all this traffic! We are going to be late.

- Be careful! You are going to fall!

“Going to” é usado também para expressar planos e decisões tomadas.

- We are going to buy a new car. We already sold our old one.

- Jane isn’t going to stay in college after July. She is going to look for a job.

2 – Present Continuous:

O present continuous é usado quando já foram tomadas providências ou

feitas combinações referentes ao futuro, ou para expressar que existe um
horário preestabelecido. Quando o presente continuous se refere ao futuro,
ele é utilizado com uma indicação temporal. Ex: next week, on Friday, at
seven o’clock etc.

- I am meeting Ann for dinner tomorrow night.

- I have a busy week. Tomorrow I am painting the kitchen, and on Friday I

am cleaning the basement.

RESUMÃO

- Going to = algo está prestes a acontecer: “Estou prevendo isto”.

- Going to = plano ou intenção: “Estou pretendendo isto”.

- Present continuous + indicação temporal: “Tomei providências, combinei

algo”.

OBS: Na maioria dos casos, tanto o presente continuous quanto o going to

podem ser usados, sem alteração de sentido. Ex:

- I am going to meet them tonight.

- I am meeting them tonight.
