 He started his music studies at the academy of music in manila.
later, he went to paris to study with Alfred Cortot. He eventually
pursued a advanced studies in the USA with E.Robert Schimtz
and earned a Doctorate Degree in Ethnomusicology from UCLA
 Jose Maceda was considered as the first Filipino Avant Garde
composer
 He also worked at a recording studio in Paris in 1958 which
specialized in musique concrete. During this period,he met Pierre
Boulez,Karlheinz Stockhausen and Lannis Xenakis considered
the musical giants of this musical genre
 Maceda embarked on a life-long dedication to the understanding
and popularization of Filipino traditional music
 He wrote papers that enlightened scholars,both Filipino and
foreign,about the nature of Philippine traditional and ethnic
music
 COMPOSITIONS; Ugma-ugma (1963),Pagsamba(1968),and Udlot-
udlot(1975),are monuments to his unflagging commitment to
Philippine music. Other major works include

 Lucrecia R. Kasilag was named as a National Artist in
Music(1989)
 Kasilag was known for incorporating indigenous filipino
music with western influences,thus paving the way for
more experimentation among filipino musicians
 She was also a teacher and performing artist
 Lucrecia’s pioneering task to discover the Filipino roots
through ethnic music and fusing it with western
influences has led many Filipino composers to
experiment with such an approach
 She has over 250 compositions and a leader in music
education, she is also considered as the First Lady of
Philippine music

 Ramon Pagayon Santos was a composer,conductor and
musicologist, is currently the country’s foremost exponent of
Contemporary Filipino Music
 He completed his Bachelor of music degree at the College of
Music(UP).He finished his Master of music degree at Indiana
University, USA
 He received his doctor of philosophy degree in composition at
the State University of New York,USA.He had also pursued
graduate studies in Ethnomusicology at the University of
Illinois,USA
 He had done extensive research on the gamelan music of java as
well as the traditional music of the Ibaloi,Maranao,Mansaka,
Bontoc,Yakan and Boholano Tribes in the Philippines
 Santos compositional style features Chromaticism,Music Seria
and Electronic Components,Combine with Indigenous Philippines
Music Elements
 He is also a University Professor Emeritus of the composition and
theory department the College of Music of the University of the
Philippines Diliman
 Simultanous with this was a reverting back to more orthodox
performance modes: chamber works and multimedia works for dance
and theatre. Panaghoy (1984), for reader, voices, gongs and bass drum,
on the poetry of Benigno Aquino, Jr. was a powerful musical discourse
on the fallen leader’s assassination in 1983, which subsequently
brought on the victorious People Power uprising in 1986.

 He is one of the 14 children of Dionesia Amper and Vedasto
Dadap
 Since 1984,Dadap has been the artistic and musical director and
principal conductor of The Children’s Orchestra Society(COS) in
NewYork City
 Dadap was recognized as the first recipient of the 2000 Artist of
the Year by the Flushing Council on the Arts in Queens,NewYork
 Dadap had also been given the Asian-American Alliance for the
Arts Award for composing the Handurawan Dance Suite. A work
that was premiered by the Brooklyn Philharmonic’s Chamber
Orchestra in 1988
 Mr. Dadap, who teaches at Douglass College of Rutgers
University, cultivated a poised, very quiet style. Playing a
“Melancholy Galliard” by John Dowland, and Francisco Tarrega's
“Recuerdos de la Alhambra,” he confided the meaning of the
notes in finely shaded whispers, and the effect was very
beautiful
 His other works include the children's musical
play, Five Visayan Serenades for Guitar; the full-length
folkloric ballet, Alamat ng Ampalaya (Legend of the Bitter Melon);
and the Legend of the Tikling Bird. Dadap is also the author of
the book Complete Method for the Virtuoso Bandurria.

neighboring city of Manila.Devoted to the promotion of Asian
music and arts,its goal is to put music and art in the context of
worship

 Josefino Chino Toledo is a composer-conductor. He is currently
the Executive Director of Miriam College Center for Applied
Music, and a full professor of music composition and theory at
the University of the Philippines
 Toledo is the founding music director of Metro-Manila Concert
Orchestra(MMCO) and the Grupo 20/21, a modular music
ensemble
 He is a recognized figure in the Asian Contemporary Art Music
Scene
 Toledo is noted for premiering works of Filipino composers as
well as other Asian composers
 His music has been described as “pure and powerful”, and has
been cited for its fusion of contemporary western language and
Southeast Asian Aesthetics
 Toledo’s music is characterized by great energy and often bears
a relationship to the traditional music of Southeast Asia
 As a conductor, he is noted for premiering works of Filipino
composers as well as other Asian composers and has conducted
concerts in Japan,Indonesia,Australia and China
 Toledo’s works also include music for theater,films,scoring
libraries,orchestrations and arrangements for different
performing forces, and revisions and editing of Philippine

 Dr. Jonas Baes is a Faculty of Composition and Theory
Department at the U.P. College of Music, and a Composer,
Ethnomusicologist, and Cultural Activist
 He encountered the works of Jose Maceda and attended several
seminar-workshops of visiting lecturers
 He researched on the music of the Iraya-Mangyan people of
Mindoro, which later became the inspiration for his compositions
 He earned his doctorate in Philippine Studies at the University of
the Philippines, with the dissertation: Modes of Appropriation in
Philippine Indigenous Music: The Politics of the Production of
Cultural Difference
 He is known for writing music utilizing unorthodox musical
instruments such as: beanpod rattles, leaves, iron-nail chimes
and various Asian instruments such as: bamboo scrapers,
bamboo flutes, and vocal music using Asian vocal techniques

 Fr. Manuel Maramba, OSB is one of the most accomplished
musicians and liturgists in the Philippines emerging during the
second half of the 20th century
 Maramba began his formation in music studies with Benedictine
Sisters in Legaspi and St. Scholastic Manila. He then took a
degree in music major in piano from the University of Santo
Tomas Conservatory of Music.
 When he was 11 years old, he gave his first public performance
at the Bamboo Organ in Las Piñas. He became the official
accompanist of the Las Piñas Boys Choir at 14 years old
 At the age of 19,he performed in the acclaimed Carnegie Hall
 Maramba continues his studies,specializing in sacred music at
the Krichenmusiks-Chile in Germany and I’m Vienna. Aside from
his degrees in music, he also obtained a degree in Philosophy
and a licentiate in sacred theology and cannon law.
 He was the youngest finalist to participate in the National Music
Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) piano competition in
1978
 Maramba is also active in music organizations. He was president
of the Philippine Society of Organized, board member of the
Piano Teachers Guild and member of the National Music Council
of the Philippines and League of Filipino Composers
 He has composed operas like aba!, Sto. Niño, La Naval, and Lord
Takayama Ukon
 He had composed a song for the First Filipino saint entitled
“Hymn to San Lorenzo Ruiz” he also wrote a music for valley
called “Awakening” and “Transfiguration | and || chamber music
 His other major compositions are the music for Awakening which
was commissioned by Ballet Philippines and music for Philippine
Ballet Theater’s production of Seven Mansions; three masses –
Papal Mass for World Youth Day,1995; Mass in Honor of the Sto.
Niño; three cantatas-St. Lorenzo Ruiz, St. Benedict, and St.
Scholastica; Three Psalms; A hymn in honor of St. Lorenzo Ruiz,
and the official hymn of the 1996 National Eucharistic Congress;
a zarzuela entitled Ang Sarswela sa San Salvador, and three
orchestral works-Pugad Lawin, The Virgin of Naval, and
Transfiguration
