Coordinating Conjunctions

A coordinating conjunction is the part of a compound sentence where two independent clauses
are joined together. Independent clauses are complete sentences that make sense on their
own. Coordinating conjunctions imply a specific relationship between complete sentences. You
can remember the coordinating conjunctions with the acronym “FANBOYS.”

Notes:
 Always use a comma when you build a compound sentence with a coordinating
conjunction:
Fix: Cats can have moist food, or they can have dry food.

 Only independent clauses that have a relationship should be combined with a coordinating
conjunction:
Fix: Cats can have moist food, or they can have dry food.

Error: Cats can have moist food, and the phone rang.

 Never build compound sentences with just a coordinating conjunction separating the
independent clauses:

Error: Cats can have moist food and they can have dry food.

 Never build compound sentences with just a comma separating the independent clauses
This creates a comma splice:

Error: Cats can have moist food, they can have dry food.

Comma Splices: Whenever you come across a comma, pause and look to see if there are
complete sentences on both sides of the comma. If there are, and there is no coordinating
conjunction present, you probably have a comma splice.

Error: The phone rang, Bob answered it.

Error: She studied with a tutor, she passed the test.

Fix: Add an appropriate coordinating conjunction:

The phone rang, and Bob answered it.

She studied with a tutor, so she passed the test.

Missing Commas: When you come to a coordinating conjunction, pause to see if both clauses
on either side are independent. If so, make sure to add a comma before the coordinating
conjunction.

Error: Sam wanted the new purse but she could not afford it.

Error: The Ada campus has more parking spaces yet we still struggle to find a place to park.

Fix: Add a comma in front of the coordinating conjunction:

Sam wanted the new purse, but she could not afford it.

The Ada campus has more parking spaces, yet we still struggle to find a place to park.

Extra Commas: Use the coordinating conjunction without the comma for sentences with both
an independent clause and a dependent clause. A dependent clause is a clause that can’t be a

Error: Sam wanted the new purse, but could not afford it.

Error: Sam wanted the new purse but, could not afford it.

Fix: Remove the extra comma.

Sam wanted the new purse but could not afford it.
