What is SIS Web?
The Caterpillar Web version of the Service Information System (SIS) is a software tool that will
help you access information easily.
You can access information by:
• Product Structure
• Document Structure
• SMCS Code
• Full Text Search
• Date Search

SIS Web can be viewed using Netscape Navigator 4.X or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.X/5.X on

Browser Requirements
The following browsers are recommended for SIS Web:
• Microsoft Internet Explorer, Version 4.X/5.X
• Netscape Navigator, Version 4.X
Note: These browsers must support Java Script and HTML, Version 2
SIS Web Helper Applications and Plug-ins
Helper applications and plug-ins are software enhancements to your browser (MS Internet
Explorer or Netscape Navigator) that improve the viewing of photographs, images, and
schematics. If your group does not have specific recommendations, we have found the following
helper applications and plug-ins satisfactory:

Information Search Methods

Product Structure
Use the Product Structure access method if you are seeking information about specific systems,
groups, and/or components (e.g., cooling systems, water pumps, and impellers) and you know the
serial number, prefix, and/or arrangement.
Document Structure
Use the Document Structure access method if you are seeking a particular type of information
such as service information, part information, tool information, etc.
Document Structure allows you to view all information types for which you have been given
access.

SMCS Code
Use the SMCS Code method if you are seeking information about a particular arrangement,
system, group, assembly, or component and you know the SMCS code.
SMCS is a four digit code that describes components of Caterpillar products. Each digit of the
code signifies a progressively narrower range of the product. For example, the specific SMCS
code 1202 would be interpreted as 1000= engine, 1200= short block engine, 1202= crankshaft for
the short block engine.
Full Text Search
Use the Full Text Search method to find, within a specific serial number prefix, all occurrences of
a specific part number and/or a specific word or phrase within specified information types.
Date Search
Use the Date Search method to select documents that were published within a certain time frame.
Media Search
Use the Media Search method to select a specific media number to view with or without a serial
number prefix.
As Shipped Engine
Use the As Shipped Engine method to access parts and service information based on a specific
engine serial number.
Parts Search
Use the Parts Search method if you are seeking information about a specific part, and you know
the part number or keyword.
The keyword is any name used to reference a part. This includes any word used to identify
product arrangements, groups, or components.
Numerical Parts Record (NPR)
Use the Numerical Parts Record (NPR) method to obtain the most current part number information
about replacement parts, quantity, weight, and references to technical documents such as Service
Letters, Service Magazines, etc. that affect a specific part number.
Quick Start
URL = Uniform Resource Locator
To start SIS Web:
Start your web browser software.
Type the following address into the URL box near the top of the window:
https://sis.cat.com
Press the Enter key.
A security window displays requesting your user name and password. Type them in the
appropriate boxes and click on the Login button.
The SIS Web splash window with the current version number displays for a few seconds, then
automatically displays the SIS Web main menu.
On-line Help
To access a list of help topics either select the word Help located at the bottom of the main
window or select the word Help located in the Go To navigation drop-down list of any later SIS
Web window. (The Go To navigation drop-down displays on every page with the exception of the
main menu.)
Feedback
If you would like to tell us what you think of SIS Web, select the word Feedback located at the
bottom of the main window, or select the word Feedback located in the Go To navigation drop-
down list of any later SIS Web window.
Tell us what you like, don't like, or ways you think SIS Web might be improved.
We welcome your comments and suggestions as an additional means of pinpointing your specific
wants and needs from SIS Web. This helps us to ensure you are getting the very best possible

Type your comments in the space provided then click on the Submit button. You will then see a
copy of the E-mail that was sent to support personnel.
Navigation
Once you have selected an engine or product, a description of that engine or product displays at
the top of each window .
EQUIPMENT: The word EQUIPMENT is a link that will open a new window containing the
(view Product, Model, and current configuration of the selected equipment. (The text
equipment after Product: and Model: are links to return to the main menu.)

This window also displays a list of available configurations that can be
selected. When a configuration is selected, you are returned to the main
menu.
Model : Display of model information for the currently selected product. This text is also
a link to return to the main menu.
Most SIS information windows have a Go To: navigation drop-down list of available navigation
options.
Navigation links allow you to return to an earlier point in your search or to locate additional
information. The following links may display depending on your current location:
Main Menu : Return to the SIS main menu.
Product Structure : Proceed to the Product Structure window.
Search Results : Proceed to the Search Results window of the search method
chosen.
Document Structure : Proceed to the Document Structure window.
Media Search : Proceed to the Media Number window.
Date Search : Proceed to the Publication Date window.
Full Text Search : Proceed to the Full Text Search window.
SMCS Code : Proceed to the SMCS Code window.
As Shipped Engine: Return to the As Shipped Engine window.
Tool Information: Proceed to the Tool Information window.
Return : Return to where you came from.
Feedback: Proceed to the Feedback form.
Help : Access SIS Web online help.
These links in the Go To: navigation drop-down list allow you to change the content or layout of
Parts Identification information windows:
Graphic Only : Display the illustration for this product without the accompanying
parts list. Use to show graphic only.
Partlist Only : Display the consist list for this product without the accompanying
illustration. Use to show consist list only.
Side by Side : Display the illustration and the consist list side by side. This is the
default, and is convenient for full window online viewing.
Top to Bottom : Display the illustration followed by the consist list.

The Safety link allows you to access the global safety document located in the front section of the
service manual literature.
Safety : Display appropriate global safety information associated with

this product and document type.
Most SIS information windows have links for previous and next topics. These links display as left
and right arrows positioned to the left of the navigation drop-down list. These links allow you to
move to the preceding information topic or proceed to the next. If a previous or next topic is not
available, the link to the unavailable topic is disabled and displays as light gray.
Prev Move to the information topic preceding the current information topic.
Next Proceed to the information topic following the current information topic.
Tip: Put the pointer over the Prev or Next topic icon to display a description of the link.
Utilities
Preferences
To change the way information is presented to you in SIS Web, select Preferences on the SIS Web
Main Menu.
The User Preference window will display.
User Interface
The Advanced User Interface gives you all the functionality you are accustomed to in SIS Web.
The Simplified User Interface is easier to use, having simplified navigation and access to
Document Structure (Browse Documentation), Product Structure (Browse by systems &
components), and Parts Search (Find a Part for the Engine) only.
Tip: The Simplified User Interface affords faster loading of windows and faster performance of SIS
Web.
Date Format
This option allows you to control the appearance of dates in some (but not all) parts of SIS Web.
Language
Selects your language preference. (Currently, English is the only language available.)
Part Manual Orientation
This option controls how a part manual page will be presented by default with the graphic and the
consist list side by side, or with the graphic displayed above the consist list and as one frame or
as separate frames.
Tip: Setting this preference to "Top to bottom" can be helpful in more effectively utilizing
horizontal window space when running in lower resolutions.
Part List
This option controls the behavior of the parts selection process. By default, the parts you have
selected are not cleared from your partlist after you have submitted or e-mailed them to someone.
If you would like your partlist to be cleared after one or both of these actions, select the
appropriate preference.
The third option allows all parts to be selected in the consist list by the use of a SELECT ALL
button. By default, this option is not active. If you would like the ability to select all parts with the
touch of a button, activate this preference.
The fourth option allows automatic selection of parts for Caterpillar Certified Rebuild. By default,
this option is not active. If you would like the ability to automatically select parts, you must have a
CCR account and select this option in your preferences.
Graphics Viewer
Selecting InterCAP allows you to use InterCAP ActiveCGM as your CGM and TIFF graphics viewer.
Selecting No InterCAP allows you to use your own helper application to view CGM and TIFF
graphics.
Note: You must have InterCAP ActiveCGM installed and selected on your computer to use
InterCAP.
Release Notes
To view the release notes for SIS Web, select Release Notes on the SIS Web Main Menu.
Release Notes contain a brief description of the new features and functionality of the current
release of SIS Web as well as any comments or tips that may be helpful to you in using SIS Web.
New Information
To view New Information, select New Information on the SIS Web Main Menu.
New Information displays a list of information added within the last seven days. Each information
element listed will include document type, document title, media, publication date, and date
updated. Each media number listed displays as a hyperlink that, when selected, will let you view
the document.
Frequently Asked Questions

To view Frequently Asked Questions, select Frequently Asked Questions on the SIS Web Main
Menu.
This section displays the most frequently asked questions along with the corresponding answers
to each. Questions and answers display in the categories of error messages, color schemes,
getting help, login, main menu, navigation, printing, reporting problems, preferences, new
information, configurations, searches, interfaces, and other frequently asked questions.
Flash Software Files

Flash Files allow Caterpillar dealers (that have access privileges) to quickly update the Electronic
Control Module (ECM) software for Caterpillar Engines and Challenger Agricultural Tractors
without sacrificing the integrity of the ECM. New personality ECM files can be loaded into the ECM
without removing the logic chip located beneath a sealed access panel on the ECM.
Flash Files are received from the Caterpillar Product Groups on the 5th, 10th, 15th and last
accounting day of each month. These days may vary due to holidays or shutdowns so please
contact the SIS Service Systems Support Center with specific questions.
To view a list of available Flash Files, select Flash Software Files from the SIS Web Main Menu.
To proceed to a particular Flash File in the list, scroll through the list of Flash Files, or type the
Flash File number in the box, then click on the Search button.
Download instructions also display in the window above the Search box.
To download a Flash File, place the cursor over the appropriate flash file in the list and press the
right mouse button.
Select Save Link As... if you are using a Netscape Navigator browser or Save Target As... if you
are using a Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, to save the file.
If you need help determining which flash file to download, select a cross reference document.
To view cross reference documents, select one from the list headed Flash File Cross Reference
Documents. (vimsxref.txt displays flash file information for large off-highway trucks. readxref.txt
displays all engine models.)
Repair Option Builder/Customer Support Agreement

Information
Select Repair Option Builder/CSA from the SIS Web main menu to display information available
for downloading.
Repair Option Builder 1.6 Data
Repair Option Builder helps develop and maintain repair options. Repair Option Builder also
includes numerous repair options developed by Caterpillar and other dealers. All repair options
provided by Caterpillar can be imported to a working database. This also enables you to have,
display, print, and use all the information to suit your needs.
To search for information, select Repair Option Builder/CSA from the SIS Web main menu and
select Repair Option Builder 1.6 Data from the Repair Option Builder/Customer Support
Agreement Information selection window.
Important: If you type a serial number prefix on the main menu and select Repair Option Builder
1.6 Data, a search will automatically be performed for that serial number prefix when the Repair
Option Builder/Customer Support Agreement search page displays.
To view a list of all available Repair Option Builder 1.6 Data files, click on the Show All Repair
Option Builder 1.6 Data Files link. A list of all available Repair Option Builder 1.6 Data files display
in the left side of the window.
To view a list of all available Repair Option Builder 1.6 Template files, click on the Show All Repair
Option Builder 1.6 Template Files link. A list of all available Repair Option Builder 1.6 Template
files display in the left side of the window.
To view a list of Repair Option Builder 1.6 Data files that have been added or updated within the
past 28 days, click on the Show New or Updated Repair Option Builder 1.6 Data Files link. A list of
Repair Option Builder 1.6 Data files that have been added or updated within the past 28 days
display in the left side of the window.
To search for a Repair Option Builder 1.6 file by serial number prefix and/or sales model, type the
prefix and/or sales model in the appropriate box. Otherwise, click on the Select Equipment Model
link to make your selection from the drop-down lists.
Product Identification Searches can be done four different ways:
1. Type the appropriate serial number prefix in the Serial Number Prefix: text box and then
click on the Search button to search for a Repair Option Builder 1.6 file by serial number.
2. If you do not know the serial number prefix and want to search a list of equipment for the
serial number prefix, perform the following steps:
• Select the Select Equipment Model link in the right side of the window..
• You will be presented with a series of drop-down lists that can used to select a
product family and product.
• Once you have selected the product you want from the drop-down lists you will be
taken back to the Repair Option Builder/Customer Support Agreement search
window with the serial number prefix automatically filled-in in the "Serial Number
Prefix:" text box.
3. Type the appropriate sales model in the Sales Model: text box and click on the Search
button to search for a Repair Option Builder 1.6 file using a sales model.
4. Type the sales model and serial number prefix in the appropriate Product Identification
Search: text boxes and click on the Search button to search for a Repair Option Builder 1.6
file using both a serial number prefix and a sales model.
Note: If you search using both, results will only be shown for Repair Option Builder 1.6
files matching both the serial number prefix and sales model (Repair Option Builder 1.6
files matching only one of the criteria are not displayed).
When the search is performed, the left side of the window displays the search results.
If no files were found that matched your criteria, the left side of the window displays a message
stating that no files were found for the criteria that was entered.
If any files were found that matched the criteria specified, they display in the left side of the
window.
To download a Repair Option Builder 1.6 file, place the cursor over the appropriate file, press the
right mouse button, and select Save Link As... (for Netscape users) or Save Target As... (for
Internet Explorer Users).
LCP 1.0 Data

LCC (or the LCP portion of the Customer Support Agreement Suite) can be used to calculate cost
per hour for any level of maintenance and repair event list (plan). LCP (Life Cycle Planner) is an
upgraded version of the LCC program that utilizes the Microsoft Windows operating environment.
LCP includes a "utilities" function for maintaining templates and a "cost calculator" function for
working with templates to create cost estimates.

To view a list of all available LCP 1.0 Data files, click on the Show All LCP 1.0 Data Files link. A list
of all available LCP 1.0 Data files display in the left side of the window.
To view a list of LCP 1.0 Data files that have been added or updated within the past 28 days, click
on the Show New or Updated LCP 1.0 Data Files link. A list of LCP 1.0 Data files that have been
added or updated within the past 28 days display in the left side of the window.
To search for a LCP 1.0 Data file by serial number prefix and/or sales model, type the prefix and/or
sales model in the appropriate box. Otherwise, click on the Select Equipment Model link to make
your selection from the drop-down lists.

SIS Parts Data

The Parts Extraction Files (PEF) are databases containing a list of all of the parts and part
descriptions for a particular parts book. The "SIS Parts Data" option is a search tool that finds the
files for completed and released parts books.
Parts Extraction Files (PEF) can be used with the Standard Work Order Segment System (SWOSS)
or the Repair Option Builder Version 1.61 program, enabling easy parts selection when creating
Repair Standards and/or with the Customer Support Agreement templates (multiple Repair
Standards).
Note: This file will not work with Repair Option Builder 1.51 or 1.6
select SIS Parts Data from the Repair Option Builder/Customer Support Agreement Information
selection window.
Important: If you type a serial number prefix on the main menu and select SIS Parts Data, a search
will automatically be performed for that serial number prefix when the Repair Option
Builder/Customer Support Agreement search page displays.
If you wish to search for a SIS Parts Data file by media number, type the media number in the CSA
File Search: text box. Click on the Search button to perform the search.
Note: The CSA File Search method can also search for media numbers that match a certain
pattern. For example, to search for a media number with a pattern such as "eb" follow these steps.
(This is just an example. Actually searching for this particular pattern may not return any results):
• Type eb in the CSA File Search: text box.
• Click on the Search button.

The search results display in the left side of the window. Searching for a pattern like "eb"
would match files with names like the following: "sebp8506.pef", "sebc1103.pef"
Note: Searching for a pattern, matches that pattern anywhere in the media number. That
pattern may be found in the beginning, middle, or end of the media number.
Download instructions also display in the window above the Search box.
To download a SIS Parts Data file, place the cursor over the appropriate file in the list and press
the right mouse button.
Select Save Link As... if you are using a Netscape Navigator browser or Save Target As... if you
are using a Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, to save the file.
To search for a SIS Parts Data file by serial number prefix and/or sales model, type the prefix
and/or sales model in the appropriate box. Otherwise, click on the Select Equipment Model link to
make your selection from the drop-down lists.

To download the file, right click on the csafinal_salesmodel_issues.txt link located at the top of
the left frame.
Select Save Link As... if you are using Netscape navigator or Save Target As... if you are using
Internet Explorer, to save the file.
To view parts extract file issues, select the Parts Extract File Issues link.
The document displays in the left frame.
To download the file, right click on the csafinal_mediano_issues.txt link located at the top of the
left frame.
Select Save Link As... if you are using Netscape navigator or Save Target As... if you are using
Internet Explorer, to save the file.
Note: Download instructions also display in the window above the CSA File Search box.
Kit Data, Reman Data, SMCS Code Data

To download Kit Data, Reman Data, and SMCS Code Data, select Repair Option Builder/CSA from
the SIS Web main menu.
When the Repair Option Builder/Customer Support Agreement Information selection window
displays there will be a section with hyperlinks to download Kit Data, Reman Data, and SMCS
Code Data files. These links will not be displayed if the corresponding document is not available.
To download the Kit Data, Reman Data, or SMCS Code Data files, place the cursor over the
appropriate file, press the right mouse button, and select Save Link As... (for Netscape users) or
Save Target As... (for Internet Explorer Users).
Finding Serial Number Prefixes and Sales Model

Numbers
Why use this method?
If you don't know the serial number prefix or a sales model number for a Caterpillar product.
Every access method for searching for technical information in SIS Web, except Media Access,
NPR, Tool Information, and Flash Software Files, requires a serial number or serial number prefix
to begin your search.
Note: The example illustrated here will work with any access method, any Caterpillar product or
product family, or sales model, not just the ones shown here.
Click on the Select Equipment Model link on the main menu.

A list of Product Families displays that you may choose from.
If you know the Sales Model number, type it in the box (for this example we will use 3176 as our
Sales Model number), then click on the Search button.
SIS Web displays the sales model(s) and the serial number prefix(es) that are available.
Select 3176 TRUCK ENGINE with the 2YG prefix.
If you don't know the Sales Model number, select an item (for this example we will select TRUCK
ENGINE as our Product Family choice) from Product Families displayed in the left column.
A list of products displays with the associated serial number prefixes in the right column. (Select
3176 TRUCK ENGINE with the 2YG prefix.)
In either case, SIS Web will take you back to the main menu and automatically place the prefix in
the product identification area.
Zooming a Graphic
At the end of a search for technical information using SIS Web, regardless of the access method
used, there is an information element. Many information elements in SIS Web contain at least one
graphic.
The example below displays an information element retrieved from a search for a 7C8568 Cylinder
Block Group Parts Identification list for a 3176 Truck Engine (S/N 2YG1-2342).
Every graphic can be made larger (zoomed) by placing the mouse pointer on the graphic and
clicking the left mouse button. In order to view a zoomed graphic, it is necessary to have a plug-in
for your browser.

Partlist Help
Note: Lines highlighted in yellow represent parts that have already been submitted to a parts list.
Note: Lines highlighted in green represent parts for Caterpillar Certified Rebuild. (You must be
given access to the CCR feature and then choose to automatically select CCR parts in preferences
in order for the green highlight to display.)
Tip: The column headers in a parts page (GR#, Req. Qty., Note, etc.) are links that provide a
description of each column.
1. Type in the quantity of the part you want to add to the shopping cart/part list.
Note: A tab to, or a mouse click in, a quantity field on a parts page now fills it with the
required quantity.
2. Click on the Format For Print link to format the page for printing. A new browser window
displays the header information, graphic (if any), and the parts list. Use the browser print
function to print the contents. To close this browser window, click on the X CLOSE
WINDOW link located in the upper right corner of the window.
3. The SMCS is associated with the parts selected.
Note: Only non-parts ordering customers will see this.
4. Click on the Select All button to select all the parts in the parts list. By default, all the
quantities for the text boxes will be filled in with the required quantity. Parts that do not
have a quantity in the required field will, by default, have a quantity of one selected. This
does not mean that it is the correct quantity needed.
Note: Parts Ordering Customers do not have this ability. Non-parts ordering customers
will have this ability if they set it as a preference.
5. Click on the Clear button to deselect/clear all the parts selected.
6. Click on the Submit button to submit all the selected parts to the shopping cart/parts list.
1. This is the serial number tracking for the part list. Only the parts with the same serial
number as the tracking number will be seen in the parts list. If ALL is selected, then all the
parts for any serial number will be shown.
2. Type in all needed information for this part list. Click on the Update Information link to
save the information.
Note:You must click on Update Information for changes to be saved. If you click on any
other link or leave this page prior to saving the data, you will lose all information entered.
3. Type in any needed information to add a new part to the parts list. Click on the Add link to
add the part, or the Cancel link to clear out the text fields.
4. If the part numbers are links, those parts will return you to the consist list where you
selected them. Click on the Remove link to remove the part from the list or the Change link
to change information about the part.
5. Click on the Open button to open previously saved parts lists located on the server. By
default, partlist will be your parts list.
6. Click on the Save button to save the current parts list to the server.
7. Click on the Discard button to discard the current parts list from the server.
8. Click on the Process button to download the current parts list from the server to your
computer. You can set a preference if you want to keep or delete the part list after
processing.
9. Click on the E-mail button to E-mail the current parts list located on the server. You can
set a preference if you want to keep or delete the part list after E-mailing.
10. Click on the Return button to return to the previous page where you last submitted parts
to the parts list.
Service Forms
Caterpillar Service Forms are now available in SIS Web. Each form has been converted to an
electronic image (PDF format) and made available to Caterpillar dealers worldwide to print as an
alternative to ordering forms from Literature Distribution.
The forms are currently available in English and Spanish, with more languages coming soon.
To access these forms, select Service Forms from the SIS Web main menu then choose the
language under the associated flag. The window that displays is in the selected language.
Select a category, then select the needed form(s).
Adobe’s Acrobat Reader is required to view or print the forms. (A link is provided to download and
install it.)
How to Search for
Technical Information in
SIS Web
Product Structure
If you want to search by a particular system (electrical system, hydraulic system, etc.)
Product Structure refers to systems, groups, and components (e.g., cooling systems, water
pumps, and impellers) of Caterpillar products based on the serial number and/or arrangement that
you specify.
The example that follows will work for any Product Family or individual product, not just the
example shown here.
Start at the Main Menu.
Type the serial number information in the appropriate space(s). (This example uses 2YG for
the serial number prefix.)
Note: If you do not know the serial number information of a model, see Finding Serial Number
Prefixes and Sales Model Numbers.
Select PRODUCT STRUCTURE, and the product list displays.

Click on the beside BASIC ENGINE to expand the item and display subtopics.
Select CYLINDER BLOCK GP in the left column and the Information Type list displays.
Select Parts Identification in the center column and the Information Available list displays.
Select 7C-8568 - CYLINDER BLOCK GP with 2YG1-2342 from the right column.
The example below displays the results of having selected 7C-8568 - CYLINDER BLOCK GP.

Once the graphic displays, you can enlarge (zoom) it by placing the mouse pointer on the graphic

If you know the information type you want to view.
Document Structure allows you to search for information by document type based on the serial
number and/or arrangement that you specify.

Parts Search
If you know the part number or part name (keyword).
The part number is any number used to reference a part. This includes any number used to
identify product arrangements, groups, or components. Parts Identification is the only information
type available for Parts Search.
Parts Search allows you to search for parts identification information based on the serial number
and/or arrangement that you specify.

To search by part number or keyword, type the Part Number or Keyword in the box (for
this example we will use 7C8568 as our Part Number) and click on the Search button.
A list displays all matches.

Scroll through the list and select 7C-8568 - CYLINDER BLOCK GP with 2YG1-2342 located
under the BASIC ENGINE heading.
The example below displays the results of having selected 7C-8568 - CYLINDER BLOCK
GP from the previous window.
Note: If a keyword had been used, that word would be highlighted in red everywhere it
displays in the consist list.
Full Text Search
If you know specific text to search for but not where to find it.

The system displays a list of all viewable Information Types.
Select Disassembly & Assembly, Engine News, and Parts Identification.
Note for Windows Users: To select several Information Types you must hold down the Ctrl key
(or the Control key) on your keyboard.
Type cylinder block in one of the Phrase text boxes then click on the Search button.
The system displays the results of the search under the Information Types/Titles column.
Click on the beside Parts Identification to expand the item and to display subtopics. The
Sections list displays.
Select BASIC ENGINE in the center column and the Information Available list displays.
Note: If a media type (Service Magazine, Troubleshooting, etc.) had been selected from the
Information Types available column, the Phrase typed in would be highlighted in red
everywhere it displays in the document.
SMCS Code
If you know the SMCS code or wish to choose from a list of SMCS codes.
SMCS stands for Service Management Control System.
This four digit code describes components of Caterpillar products. Each digit of the code signifies
a progressively narrower range of the product.
For example, the specific SMCS code "1202" would be interpreted as: 1000 = engine, 1200 = short
block engine, 1202 = crankshaft for the short block engine.

Type the number 1200 in the box and click on the Search button,
or scroll through the list to locate the needed code.
Click on the beside 1200 - SHORT BLOCK to expand the item and display subtopics.
Select 1201- CYLINDER BLOCK in the left column.

Select Parts Identification in the center column.

Date Search
If you know a certain time frame that technical information was published.

Select Date Search.
The system displays a list of all viewable Information Types.

Select Media Search.
Type the media number information in the appropriate space(s). (This example uses
SEBP1798 for the media number.)
Click on the Retrieve button.
Select BASIC ENGINE in the center column.

As Shipped Engine
As Shipped Engine provides technicians and mechanics with the ability to access parts and
service information based on a specific engine serial number. Product support information
displays based on how the product left the factory (As Shipped).
The As Shipped Engine feature can be used in two ways:
First, type the complete engine serial number (not a prefix) and select As Shipped Engine on the
main menu.
The As Shipped consist list displays a list of engine attachments added to or lessed-off (removed
from) the standard engine arrangement for that engine. This list is similar to a regular parts
consist list with check boxes, links to separate illustrations, etc. Many engines have no
attachments added or lessed-off, so you see only the engine arrangement listed.
If NPR information is available, you will see an NPR link.
An L in the Note column indicates the part was lessed-off (removed) before shipping.
A Y in the Note column indicates a part number contains individual components,and the part
number will be a link to that information.
An R in the Note column indicates a remanufactured part.
If the message SIS does not contain additional information for the serial number ... displays at the
top, then none of the part numbers will be links to additional information.

The second way As Shipped information can be used is to type in a complete engine serial
number and select another access method, such as Product Structure or Document Structure.
The As Shipped database is searched to determine the arrangement for that particular engine. If
found, the arrangement is used to filter out the other possible arrangement information available
for that prefix just as if the user had put in the arrangement.
As a comparison, type in the prefix 2YG and select Document Structure.
A list of information types/titles available displays.

Click on the beside Parts Identification to expand the item and display sub topics.
Select Engine Arrangement in the center column.
Several available arrangements display in the right column.

However, if you type in the full serial number 2YG10743 at the Main Menu and follow the same
steps above, only one arrangement displays. Select that arrangement.
Select Main Menu from the Go To: navigation, or click on the Model: Truck Engine 2YG link to
return to the Main Menu. You will see that the Arrangement: box has automatically been filled in
with the arrangement for that engine.
Numerical Parts Record (NPR) Inquiry

If you know the number of the part.
NPR is a system that contains part number related information for all Caterpillar products. This
system is primarily used to obtain the most current part number information for ordering
replacement inventory and repair parts.
Part Number is a required entry and must contain a valid Caterpillar part number.
Country is the location of the Caterpillar facility having design control of the engineering change.
Eng Change (not required) is a three digit entry field. If no entry is made, the first available
Engineering Change for the part number requested displays.
NPR symbols
# Part not serviced.

See Service Part No frame for replacement parts.
Caution: part number(s) appearing in the Service Part No might also be replaced.
@ Non-returnable part.
% Item is an attachment.
+ Special part, not used on regular production engine. Such items as undersize parts, service
bushings, etc., are marked in this manner.
* Part weighs less than a pound.

Q
Part Name
The part numbers display below the description and are the part numbers replaced by the
inquired part number. Package Quantity (PKG) or Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) will also display
in this column when applicable.
Service Part Number
• Service Part Number displays the replacing numbers if the part number in Part Name is
preceded by a #.
• If two or more parts replace the part number, the quantity of each displays.
• Part numbers in this column are serviceable numbers and need not be checked further
unless they are followed by the symbol #.
• If a number in this column is followed by the symbol #, that number should be checked to
determine its replacement.
• This column also includes important special instructions that should be noted and
followed.
• Service Part Number may also contain references to service literature. The literature
reference will appear with key part numbers that require specific service attention.
As an example, the following service reference could display in the NPR.
ENOC3072
This reference tells us that the Engine News of October 30, 1972, has important service
information regarding the use of that part.
The first two letters (EN) identify the type of service literature and the third and fourth
letters (OC) identify the month.
The first two numbers (30) identify the day of the month and the third and fourth numbers
(72) identify the year.
Following is a list of abbreviations used for service literature references:

Special instruction form numbers and partsgram numbers may also display in this
column. These are listed to call attention to the availability of published information about
the installation or serviceability of a part.
Where Used or Sized
The Where Used or Sized column identifies the name and frequently the part number of
the assembly, group, or arrangement in which the part is used. Each occurrence of this
information is sequenced and the sequence number also displays. This column may also
contain important special instructions.
Group numbers and serial numbers to which the requested part number is applicable also
display in this column.
The following information displays for serial number applications:
Quantity - Quantity of the inquired part number required for the serial number.
Serial Effective - The first serial number of each series of serial numbers to which the
inquired part number is applicable.
Discontinued - The last serial number in each series of serial numbers to which the
inquired part number is applicable.
The serial number references of a part, assembly, group, or arrangement that is not part of
the standard engine, although applicable to such engines, is preceded by a %.
A serial reference preceded by a + indicates that the inquired part, assembly, group, or
arrangement is not used on regular production engines.
Examples of this are oversize bearings, undersize bearings, or other special parts used as
replacement for standard parts.
The following information displays for group number usage:
Qty - Quantity of the inquired part number required for the group.
Group Ptno - The group part number in which the inquired part number is used.
E-Chg - The engineering change level of the group part number. The first symbol of the
change level indicates the Caterpillar Inc. facility having design control of the engineering
change.
A four digit change number follows the design control symbol. The first two digits indicate
the first change level to which the inquired part number is applicable. The last two digits
indicate the last change level to which the inquired part number is applicable.
The following example will work for any Product Family or individual product, not just the
example shown here.
Select NPR.
Type a valid Part Number, then click on the Search button.
The requested Numerical Parts Record displays.
Tool Information
To view tool information:
Select Tool Information.
Click in the circle next to Tool Guide or Engine Tool Guide as appropriate.
Select a Section (in the left column).
Select a Subsection (in the center column).
Select an Information Available title (in the right column).
To search for tool information:
Select Tool Information.
Click in the circle next to Tool Part Name or Tool Part Number as appropriate.
Type a tool part name or a tool part number in the box provided. The part name can be
any word or combination of words used in a part name.
Click on the Search button.
Select a Section (in the left column).
Select a Subsection (in the center column).
Select an Information Available title (in the right column).
Caterpillar Certified Rebuild

Caterpillar Certified Rebuild provides the ability to automatically select and highlight parts
that are required for the Caterpillar Certified Rebuild.
You must be given access to use this feature. This feature only applies to products
participating in the Caterpillar Certified Rebuild program. To have the parts that are
required for the Caterpillar Certified Rebuild selected automatically, choose the
Automatically select parts for Caterpillar Certified Rebuild option from the preferences
menu. See the Preferences section for more information on setting user preferences.
If you are viewing parts pages for prefixes participating in CCR, and if you have chosen
the Automatically select parts for Caterpillar Certified Rebuild option, if any parts are
required for the Caterpillar Certified Rebuild those rows with the required part will be
highlighted green and the default quantity will be filled in automatically.
If you choose not to have the parts that are required for the Caterpillar Certified Rebuild
selected automatically, select the Do not automatically select parts for Caterpillar Certified
Rebuild option from the preferences menu. See the Preferences section for more
information on setting user preferences.
Filter Search
SIS Web provides users with a method to identify and access Filters, Breathers, and Screens for a
given serial number prefix (but not for a specific serial number.)
The link Filter Search displays on the SIS Web main menu in the advanced interface.
Type a serial number or serial number prefix and single click on the link. When a 3-character serial
number prefix is entered and multiple configurations exist, the system displays all ranges and the
user must select the correct one. When only one configuration exists, the system should bypass
the configuration selection and go directly to the parts page. If the user enters a 4 to 8 character
serial number that matches an existing range of serial numbers, the system will select the
appropriate configuration and return the Filters parts page.
The Filters parts page displays with input text boxes for quantity, links to Numerical Parts Record
(if user has access), notes, part numbers, systems, part names, and links to group part names.
The last two columns (Part No. and Part Name) of the Filters page display in the following order:
• Filters are grouped by systems that display in a dark violet color.
• Under each system the Filter part numbers and descriptions display in black.
• If they exist, High Efficiency filters display in green with the letters HE in green under
Notes.
• If they exist, Fire Resistant filters display in dark maroon with the letters FR in dark
maroon under Notes.
• The list of group descriptions where each filter part number can be found display as
hyperlinks.
• When a component is found in multiple groups within a system, the multiple groups
display even if they have the same description.
The user may submit a parts order from the Filter parts page to SIS Web's parts list. Once a parts
list is created, all parts list maintenance functions are available, such as "Save", "E-mail", etc. If
the user has parts ordering capability within the PartStore, the order may be submitted to the
Shopping Cart.
Column Definitions:
Qty Text box for the user to specify quantity.
