TRANSLATION #1

1. About 70% of the Syrian population has no access to drinking

water; one in three people are unable to meet their basic food

needs, more than 2 million children are out of school, and four

out of five people live in poverty.

recapturing the ancient heritage site of Palmyra from IS for the

second time in March.

4. Newly arrived Rohingyas are building temporary settlements

near established camps where hundreds of thousands of

Rohingya refugees from previous exoduses already live. Most

are women, children and the elderly.

ً ً ) North Korea over its weapons tests.

6. The conflict in Syria is now more than just a battle between

those for or against Mr Assad; it has acquired sectarian

overtones and drawn in regional and world powers.

7. The UN Security Council has demanded ( ‫طالبت األمم المتحدة كافة‬

‫ )األطراف المعنية‬all parties end the indiscriminate use of weapons in

populated areas, but civilians continue (‫ )الزالوا‬to die in their

thousands.

8. Burma’s de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, on Tuesday

acknowledged the “suffering” in Rakhine state but

sidestepped allegations of atrocities committed by the Burmese

military.

9. Trump called (‫ )دعا ترامب‬on the government in Tehran to cease

supporting terrorism and again criticised (‫ )انتقد‬the Obama-era

international agreement over Iran's nuclear programme, which

he called ( ‫ )أو وصفها أسماها أو اعتبرها‬an embarrassment.

10. Violence escalated (‫ )تصاعد‬and Syria descended ( ‫إنزلقت أو‬

‫ )وقت في براثن أو دوامة‬into civil war as rebel brigades were formed

(‫ )بينما تشكلت فصائل ثورية تقاتل الحكومة‬to battle government forces for

control of cities, towns and the countryside.

11. A report in June 2017 by IHS Conflict Monitor said IS had lost

(‫ )أشار أو كشف تقرير أن داعش فقدت‬more than 60% of the territory it

used to control (‫ )التي كانت تسيطر عليها أو في حيازتها‬in Iraq and Syria

in January 2015.

12. By June 2013, the UN said 90,000 people had been

killed (‫ )كان عدد ما قد لقوا مصرعهم‬in the Syrian conflict. By August

2015, that figure had climbed (‫ )كان الرقم قد تفاقم إلى أن وصل إلي‬to

250,000, according to activists and the UN.

13. The UN says it will need (‫)صرحت األمم المتحدة بأنها سوف تحتاج‬

$3.2bn to help the 13.5 million people, including 6 million

children, who will require (‫ )الذين سوف يحتاجون‬some form of

humanitarian assistance inside Syria in 2016.

14. In a recent trip to Baghdad, Defense Secretary James

Mattis said that the vote would distract ( ‫عملية التصويت سوف تشتت‬

‫ )من تركيز العراق على الهدف األهم أال وهو هزيمة داعش‬from the primary

mission of defeating the Islamic State.

15. UNICEF predicts (‫ )يتوقع اليونيسيف‬by the end of 2019, the

lives of over 10.6 million children across Syria will have been

torn (‫ )سيكون هناك عدد طفل قد تمزقت حياته بسبب العنف‬apart by violence.

16. This month, Kurds will be voting (‫ )سيصوت‬not only for

candidates in the national elections, but also for regional

independence from Iraq.
