0 Timing Belt
Timing belt is a part of an internal combustion engine that synchronizes the rotation of
the crankshaft and the camshaft so that the engine’s valve open and close at the proper times
during each cylinder’s intake and exhaust strokes. Below are the component of belt drive
system of the given engine.

2.1 Timing Belt Inspection

Timing belt are placed in its own housing which makes it extremely difficult to check
the belt visually. If the engine or timing belt itself are to be taken out then the timing belt can
be check visually by first look at the outside of the belt to see if any tiny cracks are forming. If
there are a lot of cracks on the surface of the timing belt it indicate the belt are wear out.

Then flip the belt over slightly to inspect the teeth. This can be done at the point that’s
farthest away from both pulleys. Inspect whether the all the teeth of the belt are in good
condition. Even only one tooth of the belt are broken the timing belt need to replace. This is
because the missing tooth can cause it to do something called “jump the timing” which will
make the opening of valve and the timing of spark plug to produce spark are differ and this will
cause the engine to run terribly.
2.2 Timing Belt Disassembling Process
1. Remove the timing cover using 12 mm spanner.

2. Rotate the crankshaft sprocket clockwise using wrench to ensure that the mark on the
camshaft are align to the mark on the cylinder head and the mark on the crankshaft sprocket
are align to the mark on the cylinder block.

3. Then remove the timing belt tensioner to loosen the timing belt.
4. Remove and inspect the timing belt to ensure whether it is still in good condition.
