Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Students need time management because it has an important role in their life.

Nowadays, time seen as indefinitely divisible and usable commodity. Through time

management, students can organize and enhance their duties in school; task

performed right and there also might be time for other school activities by planning

it. Being successful is twinned with right time management to fulfill effective works.

It will help you to infuse the concept of time through every institution. All of the

materials and human resources possessed organization that can enhance the course

time or transformed as time goes on, yet it is the only asset that we cannot changed

or purchased or stored is time itself. The secret for achieving the success in life is

effective managing of this resource that everyone possess equal and paying sufficient

of emphasis in planning (Macans, Shahani, Dipboye & Philips, 2000). Through the

effective and sufficient use of the time varies with respect to the tasks performed,

the further increase in their level of knowledge and skills expected from student, that

also further increase the necessity of time planning. The road to success in social life

is to passes through the efficient and effective working which is the possible way

through the help of time management.

Time management plays a vital role to improve student's academic

performance and others. Every student should need to have time management ability

that includes setting, goals and priorities, with the help of time management

mechanism and organizing of using time.

The research aim to examine the time management of the students for the

following reasons: (a). reinforcement of more effective and efficient decision both

regards to the changes we would like to make to use our time. (b). Contribute to what

will be more beneficial that can lead for them to have a better and successful work.

Driven by these reasons, the researchers will undertake this study to

determine the effects of time management on academic performance among the

Nineveh Academy’s Grade 12 students, S.Y. 2019-2020.

Theoretical/ Conceptual Framework

Understanding the importance of time management is very essential for

everyone. As define by Saptakee Sengupta, it is the conscious control when imposed

for all over the amount of the time that they spent in doing day-to-day activities that

would allow you to divide your priorities and set deadlines. Thus, it will be able you

to accomplish task within the set of the limit. Time management is possible to

understand the theories, principle and techniques proposed by the same philosophers

and scientist who have understood its significance in life. Studying the theories about

time management will help you/us to organize, plan and schedule you/our

responsibilities, activities and goals for our life in the right manner

Here are the most popular theories that help people understand the

importance of the time management in every sphere of life.

Pickle Jar Theory by Stephen Covey, serve as visual metaphor to determine

“what is useful and what is not useful”. It is about a big glass pickle jar filled with

large number of fist-sized rocks, pebble sand a lot of sand that helps you to set your

priorities for daily life and plan task in such way, that you have time to spare instead

of too few hours in the day.

This approach is also consistent to Pareto Principle by Vilfredo Pareto. He

was an Italian economist and philosopher who formulated the 80-20 rule, Specifies

that 80% of consequences come from 20% of the causes. Also, the 80-20 rule can be

applied on a personal level. Time management is the most common use for this

theory, as most people tend to thinly spread out their time instead of focusing on the

most important task. If you apply the Pareto Principle to one of the keys of academic

success, studying, you will find that you get 80% of your studying done in 20% of

your time actually spent studying. It means that when you’re studying, you spend a

lot of time being distracted, re-reading, thinking about other things, daydreaming

about your future more than being focus on studying.

Did you ever feel like you’re running out of your time? We all get the same
24 hours in a day but why does it seem like some people can able to achieve so much
time within 24 hours than others? The answer is found in effective time
management.

As define of Filipino Journal by Thuy Lam, time management is all about

how can you organize and plan your time. On the other hand, time management can
be easy if there’s practice that takes time and effort for great development.

Time management is about spending your time rightly and to manage it

effectively is you should find strategies that’ll fit it in your priorities, obligations and

specifically in your schedule.

Here are the some tips that can help you to improve your time management

skills:

1. Prioritize work. Make a list of your task that needs your priorities first.

2. Avoid Procrastination. It’ll just waste your essential time and energy, it

also bring negative effects on your productivity.

3. Avoid multitasking. A lot of people thinks multi tasking can get all task

done quickly but the real thing is we can do things better if we tend to focus on one

task at a time. It’s better to finish one before proceeding to another.

4. Set up deadlines. Set a realistic deadline and stick to it. Set it few days

before the deadline so you can finish it before another task inserted in your way.

Challenge yourself to meet the deadline.

5. Schedule task. Bring a notebook or a planner with you that you can use to

write your entire task or just use a phone and type it in your notes app. Make a to-do

list for each day that prioritize your tasks.

Foreign Literature

This section is the highlight of review articles about the Time Management

and Academic Performance that is published in some different international journals.

As define by Leadership-central.com, you can only harvest the advantage of

the time by efficiently managing of your time. It sounds like pretty straight forward

because many of us don’t fully understand the advantage of managing time

efficiently. As a result, they spend only very little of time in understanding how to

vital mistake of giving up at the sign of difficulty, understanding the meaning of time

management and the importance of time management will provide them to have

some insight that can change your beliefs,

Managing your time isn’t something that you need to have an extra skill. You

only need to have knowledge to manage your time that dedicated to implement you

doesn’t need much importance at the moment.

Other foreign study as define by Steve Mueller, applying proper study about

time management strategy can help you to save more time and stress; it also enables

you to spend other time for your hobbies and spare-time activities. Furthermore, it

will also help you to empower your efforts as you can be able to spend more time on

a important subjects. Time management for students is very important for them to

manage their time to balance the things that they need to do.

According to Steve Mueller, the following are the presented with some

effective student time management techniques and student tips on how to study

effectively.

1. Prepare a term schedule/calendar. You only have 24 hours a day, 168

hours a week and 10 hours a term. Effective study time management means that you

can use your given time for the most efficient way. You only have one, four, or even

many hours a day that you can invest for your studies, but it depends on your leisure

activities and even if you have a job or not. So that, having time management is

important to prepare regularly update for your schedule/calendar, so you can (a)

write down all your scheduled test, (b) write down all the task, assignment, and

duties, if necessary with your due dates, (c) record your planned leisure activities,

such as gym, etc.

2. Get an Organizer. Another useful study time management technique is to

have an organizer. It could be your Smartphone, a college block or some sort of

homework booklet. This is the easiest way for the author to sort a single paper on the
NINEVEH ACADEMY
“The Home of Academic Champions”

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

top of all others into the ring binder and use it when you have a lot of schoolwork to

do. And every time you have a task to accomplish you will mark it down on your

booklet/paper. You can consider your organizer as your to-do-list for your studies

where you can write down everything you need to get done. And then, after you

accomplished the task you can a check (/) as a sign that you did it with your time.

3. Study time management. Take yourself some minute after coming

home from university/college and evaluate the amount of time you can invest

in your studies. This is where you can start to manage your study time, so

the author recommended having 15 minutes for this. And make sure that you

will include the time for studying, completing the task and assignments,

projects, etc.

4. Use the time efficiently: Besides your studies, you will have

different tasks and duty you have to accomplish, which means you need to

use your time efficiently as possible. While preparing for exams make sure

that you will not get interrupted. You will done within the less time if power

session is applied, where you can focus all your attention only on you

studies.

5. Schedule your time depending on your energy level. Another

important study time management technique is to schedule your time

NINEVEH ACADEMY
“The Home of Academic Champions”
Brookeside Lane, San Francisco, City of General Trias, Cavite

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

depends on your personal energy level. Your energy level reaches its peak

at approximately at 10am, but it is very low during the time from 2pm to 4pm.

Lot of student is very productive in the morning, so it could be very

useful to rise up early (when you are not in university/school at this time).

Other prefer in evening hours as their most productive part of the day. The

important thing is you know yourself on which time-period you can work

most efficient and adapt your schedule according to your high-energy

periods.

6. Procrastination. One of the biggest obstacles you might face while

applying the effective study time management is procrastination, which is

correlated to discipline. Every student is affected once in a while or

continuously. The desire is to avoid specific tasks come within boredom, fear

or similar concerns. Not getting started will lead to stress and anxiety, which

are very negative emotions during your studies. Luckily you can overcome

procrastination by applying the following study time management technique;

create smaller sub-goals and sub-tasks. You will notice that the sub-task will

help you to get started with your studies and will get you motivate to do the

next task as well.

Getting excellent grades can be accomplish by everyone if they will apply the

study time management and integrated careful planning into their everyday life. The

above-named student tips on how to study effectively will help you to manage your

time more efficient and effectively.

Related Studies

As define by Abdulkadir Mohamud, Asho Abucar Osman, Raqia Ahmed

Mohamed that a lot of people can’t manage their time for some reasons but by

organizing it can be improve as time goes on because time cannot change itself. To

achieve success is to organize first your priorities and give time for each fairly. Their

research is about determining the relationship between time management skills and

academic performance of students which was collected in a primary and secondary

data. The methods were used are interviews, questionnaire and case study for

collecting the primary and secondary data from various magazines, reference books,

articles etc. Time management and academic performance of the students have a

significant and positive relation while between time consumers and academic

achievement have a low and positive relation, then time management and academic

achievement have a meaningful and moderate relation.

like procrastination, disorganization, interruptions and work load stress of students

was made by surveying male freshmen's and sophomore students. Conducting

surveys on male freshmen's and sophomores in Petroleum Institute is how the data

collected. The survey has 22 closed-ended questions such as multiple questions,

yes/no questions and ranking questions that shows time management and academic

performance is highly related to each other. Through discussing of these results they

came up with the recommendations for the P.I. students have a better level of time

management.

The purpose of this study is, for those students who give importance to

education and therefore having master's degree education; in order to cope with

constant changes and develop of the business life, to know that the most significant

challenge ahead will be the misuse of their time management. The student of

Beykent University has a population of 231 students wherein time management was

distributed to 108 students,89 of them were proper to analyze. The student’s score

were assessed to determine their level in managing their time. 18 items of the

questionnaire might be a descriptive of the survey taker. These questionnaires were

used as an instrument developed by Britton and Tesser. The relationship between

time management and academic performance showed positive results.

Gap/s Bridged by the Present Study

From the above review of related literature and studies, the following gaps

will be determined:

1. There was no study yet conducted on How the Grade 12 students of Nineveh

Academy manage their time.

2. There was no study yet conducted on what are the underlying reasons why

some students have poor time management and some are not in Nineveh

Academy.

3. There was no study yet conducted on What are the possible ways to handle

the students’ time in a more effective and efficient way in Nineveh Academy.

In view of the identified gaps, the present study is determined to look on the

RESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the research design and methodology of the study. It

shows how the procedural operations of the research problem of this study are to be

answered.

Research Design

The researchers will utilize the descriptive-correlational method of research,

with emphasis on the empirical analysis to describe situation, condition, and

variables manifested in the study and how they are related to one another producing

solution to specific questions. This type of research endeavors to describe

systematically, factually, accurately, and objectively a situation or problem or

phenomenon; the correlational method tries to probe the significance of relationship

between two or more factors or characteristics (Bermudo, et al. 2010). To achieve

the purpose of this study, a survey method will be usedin the form of questionnaire.

Sources of Data
NINEVEH ACADEMY

The study will have two sources of data, namely, primary and secondary. The

primary sources of data are the <INSERT HERE YOUR RESPONDENTS: dating

couples from selected cities of Laguna. Data gathered from the internet which

contained the related studies, literatures, books, journals, articles and other related

materials served as secondary sources of data.

Population of the Study

Population or universe is the aggregate of all units possessing certain

specified characteristics on which the sample seeks to draw inferences

(Krishnaswamy, 2000). The total number of individuals to whom the results of the

research are intended to apply constitute the research population. For the present

study, the sample consisted of 30 heterosexual dating couples or 60 individuals

ranging in age from 20 to 40 years of age. To qualify for the study, each member of

the dating couple had to be dating for not less than three months. This criterion

ensured that couples had been together long enough for the relationship to be

somewhat solidified but still able to answer questions concerning the beginning of

their relationship. The researchers used <STATE YOUR SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

delimited population of the study. Participants were surveyed at a location where

they can be found, including a public location, such as a restaurant, mall, church, or

and Cabuyao).

Instrumentation and Validation

<CHOOSE JUST ONE: (A). QUESTIONNAIRES- it can be a standardized

THE INTERVIEW/ SURVEY FORMS; MAKE IT AT LEAST 5).

The researcherswill develop and utilize a self-made questionnaire to gather

the needed information from the respondents with reference to their view towards

marriage and willingness to get married. It was inspired by The Marriage Beliefs

Inventory (Peters, 1984) as published by the Liberty University (2010) and was

designed to measure biblical versus unbiblical held beliefs about marriage. It

containsfive sub-scales of marriage problem including finances, fulfillment,

communication, companionship, and sex. Part 1 dealt with the necessary

identification of the profile of the respondents. Part 2 contained four-point Likert

Scale statements that determined the respondents’ view towards marriage. Part 3

contained four-point Likert Scale statements that determined the respondents’ level

of willingness to get married.

After formulating the questionnaire or guide questions, it will be brought to

the panel of experts for critiquing and validation.

After the necessary revisions had been made, the contents of the

questionnaire will be finalized, reproduced, and distributed to the respondents for the

gathering of data.

Data Gathering Procedure

After the validation of the instrument which will be utilized in the study, the

researchers will go through the process of finding the participants, gaining access

and establishing rapport, which are all important to procure good data (Creswell,

2017). Ethical consideration was maintained throughout the course study by giving

careful attention and respect for the procurement of the necessary data. The

researchers personally asked for consent, set-up appointments, gone through careful

observation, and considered the willingness of the participants before conducting the

survey.

The researchers explained the procedures and assured each respondent that

responses were completely anonymous and confidential.

If there’s a circumstance that a couple is taking the survey simultaneously,

they were encouraged not to compare, discuss or observe their mate’s answers.

Violations of this control may result in tendencies toward centralization of couples’

scores, causing inaccuracy and thereby lower the usefulness of the inventory in its

ability to measure incongruent beliefs between the dating couple. Once the

respondents had answered them, it was collected. The gathered data from the

questionnaire/ guide questions will be tallied, tabulated, and interpreted.

Recommendations

In the light of the findings of the study and the reflections of the researchers,

the following are offered as recommendations for possible actions:

<PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE INDIVIDUALS OR THE GROUPS

YOU MENTIONED IN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY WILL BE SEEN

HERE THEN, YOU CAN ADD MORE IF YOU WANT TO 😊>

1. Since this study was all about the view towards marriage and the willingness

to get married, dating couples, those who are students especially, are

encouraged to be proactive on learning and understanding beyond the overly

romanticized norm how the generation conceptualize dating relationships

nowadays that it may serve as an active awareness and if ever, preparation for

marriage. Also, to cultivate new habits like travelling, reading books, articles,

podcasts, joining support groups that speaks to one’s interest and preferences

that will surely contribute to personal growth and promotes self-

introspection.

2. To educators as a tool to utilize the results to shift tone around dating

relationships and improve communication skill-building in adult on-going

education programs. For big and significant changes start in small classrooms

and principles instilled on students while they are on campus becomes the

values or norms in our society.

3. Mental healthcare specialists, counselors, family therapists, and social

workers by becoming more proactive through words, actions, on social

media, and any given platform to them to extend help and share valuable

insights to improve and strengthen our generation’s view around human

relationships and ultimately, raise up better mental healthcare and awareness.

4. The religious communities to be more intentional on planning on providing

avenues and potentially opening the door for partnership like reaching out to

the next generation through campus ministries, for greater trust and help-

seeking and on how the youth and adults talk with this generation about their

relationships could help the gaps in our society if possible, by establishing

biblical truth and foundations.

5. To government and policy-makersinterested in age relations, religion, family,

youth development and demographic change as basis for constituting policy

issues with goals of strengthening the youth and families.

6. To parents to be more intentional on giving broader knowledge and

perspective and considerate on hearing new ones that may improve the noted

disconnect between them and the dating couples. Also, to help them know

how much they can influence their children that they may able to help them

on issues about dating and marriage.

7. The researchers ( and future researchers) in this field to expand their level of

understanding and focus beyond dating individuals, how social context

intersects with romantic relationships and be more vocal on sharing it.
