SECTION 05 52 13
PART 1 - GENERAL
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. General: In engineering handrails and railings to withstand structural loads indicated, determine
allowable design working stresses of handrail and railing materials based on the following:
1. Structural Steel: AISC S335, "Specification for Structural Steel Buildings Allowable
Stress Design and Plastic Design with Commentary."
2. Cold-Formed Structural Steel: AISI SG-673, Part I, "Specification for the Design of
Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members."
B. Structural Performance of Handrails and Railings: Provide handrails and railings complying
with requirements of ASTM E 985 for structural performance, based on testing performed
according to ASTM E 894 and ASTM E 935.
1. Top Rail of Guards: Capable of withstanding the following loads applied as indicated:
a. Concentrated load of 200 lbf (890 N) applied at any point and in any direction.
b. Uniform load of 50 lbf/ft. (730 N/m) applied horizontally and concurrently with
uniform load of 100 lbf/ft. (1460 N/m) applied vertically downward.
c. Concentrated and uniform loads above need not be assumed to act concurrently.
2. Handrails Not Serving As Top Rails: Capable of withstanding the following loads
applied as indicated:
a. Concentrated load of 200 lbf (890 N) applied at any point and in any direction.
b. Uniform load of 50 lbf/ft. (730 N/m) applied in any direction.
c. Concentrated and uniform loads above need not be assumed to act concurrently.
3. Infill Area of Guards: Capable of withstanding a horizontal concentrated load of 200 lbf
(890 N) applied to 1 sq. ft. (0.09 sq. m) at any point in system, including panels,
intermediate rails, balusters, or other elements composing infill area.
a. Load above need not be assumed to act concurrently with loads on top rails in
determining stress on guard.
1.4 SUBMITTALS
B. Shop Drawings: Show fabrication and installation of handrails and railings. Include plans,
elevations, sections, component details, and attachments to other Work.
1. For installed handrails and railings indicated to comply with design loads, include
structural analysis data signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer
responsible for their preparation.
C. Product Test Reports: From a qualified testing agency indicating handrails and railings comply
with ASTM E 985, based on comprehensive testing of current products.
D. Samples; within the programmed time submit samples of the following products, being part of
the quantity required for the project. Obtain approval of appearance and other relevant
characteristics before proceeding with manufacture. Contractor should submit the following
samples:
B. Testing Agency Qualifications: An independent testing agency with the experience and
capability to conduct the testing indicated, as documented according to ASTM E 548.
C. Source Limitations: Obtain each type of handrail and railing through one source from a single
manufacturer.
1.6 STORAGE
A. Field Measurements: Verify handrail and railing dimensions by field measurements before
fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings. Coordinate fabrication schedule
with construction progress to avoid delaying the Work.
1.8 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate installation of anchorages for handrails and railings. Furnish setting drawings,
templates, and directions for installing anchorages, including sleeves, concrete inserts, anchor
bolts, and items with integral anchors, that are to be embedded in concrete or masonry. Deliver
such items to Project site in time for installation.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 METALS
A. General: Provide metal free from pitting, seam marks, roller marks, stains, discolorations, and
other imperfections where exposed to view on finished units.
B. Steel and Iron: Provide steel and iron in the form indicated, complying with the following
requirements:
1. Steel Pipe: ASTM A 53; finish, type, and weight class as follows:
2. Steel Tubing: Cold-formed steel tubing, ASTM A 500, Grade A, unless another grade is
required by structural loads.
3. Steel Plates, Shapes, and Bars: ASTM A 36/A 36M.
4. Iron Castings: Malleable iron complying with ASTM A 47, Grade 32510
(ASTM A 47M, Grade 22010).
5. Stainless Steel pipes and threads, Stainless steel alloy 316 S16.
C. Brackets, Flanges, and Anchors: Cast or formed metal of same type of material and finish as
supported rails, unless otherwise indicated.
2.2 ITEMS
A. ACCESS LADDERS AND COOLING TOWERS LADDERS: to BS 4211, mild steel with
galvanized factory finish, consisting of flat bar stringers and round single bar rungs, with
handrails and safety hoops, as shown on the Drawings, welded or riveted and bolted together
and supplied complete with accessories and fixings. Field finishing is to be as indicated on
Drawings.
B. WATER TANKS LADDERS: are to be fixed-type ladders for water tanks of style as indicated
on Drawings and constructed of stainless steel alloy 316 S 16, pressure welded construction
comprising pipe side handrails, of a minimum diameter of 45 mm, and non-slip steps made of
ABS-coated stainless steel fixed in between side handrails at vertical intervals not exceeding
280 mm on centers with neoprene-covered fixings. Number of steps is to be as indicated on
Drawings. Color of steps is to be white. Water Tanks ladders are to be of a minimum width of
450 mm at centers of handrails and installed 120 mm clear from finished surface of hanging
wall, unless otherwise indicated on Drawings. Ladders are to be provided complete with anchor
