With the arrival of Eya Laure in the 2019 PVL Collegiate Conference, the
University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses ran roughshod over the
Technological Institute of the Philippines Lady Engineers, 25-11, 25-9, 25-
11, Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
“Malaking bagay para sa amin. ‘Yun nga, unti-unting nabubuo ang tropa so
mas malaking bagay ‘yun, dun kami sa magandang output,” UST head
coach Kungfu Reyes said.
The younger Laure and Joyce Abueg finished with eight markers apiece to
spearhead a balanced offensive thrust for the Golden Tigresses, who rose
to a 3-0 card. They also helped UST tighten its hold of a solo lead in Pool B
and secure at least a playoff for a semis spot.
EJ Laure, who shared the court with her younger sister for the first time in
three years, managed a point in their much-awaited reunion.
Maji Mangulabnan tossed 13 excellent sets for the Golden Tigresses, who
saw 11 players tally a point in the straight-set drubbing.
On the other hand, the Lady Engineers bowed out of semifinals contention
after losing all of their three matches.
Wielyn Margallo and Ashley Jinon topped TIP with seven markers each.
The Golden Tigresses shall next face UAAP rival FEU while the Lady
Engineers seek to barge into the win column against Lyceum. Both matches
will be played on Sunday at the same venue.
Cuñada, Letran pull off
come-from-behind stunner
against Perpetual
Staring at a two-set deficit, the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Lady Knights dug deep, outlasting the University of
Perpetual Help System DALTA Lady Altas in five sets, 16-25, 24-26, 26-24, 25-18, 17-15, to cop their first win in the 2019
PVL Collegiate Conference, Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
“Lumaban sila sa Perpetual kahit down by two sets kami. They showed their character. Yun na yun,” Letran head coach
Michael Inoferio said.
Holding a 2-0 set edge, the Lady Altas seized command in the third frame. They flipped a 7-12 deficit with a blistering 9-0
surge for a four-point advantage in the second technical timeout.
While Perpetual sprinted to a commanding 24-20 cushion, Chamberlaigne Cuñada hammered down a momentum-
swinging hit. It incited a 6-0 set-clinching run, pushing the match to a fourth set.
From there, the Lady Knights rode their momentum and mounted a 23-16 lead to force a decider.
It was a nip-and-tuck affair in the final chapter. Tied at 13, Edma Musngi netted an ace to break the knot, but Bianca
Tripoli forced a two-to-win situation with another deadlock at 15-all.
The Lady Knights then found the finishing kick through their defense. They denied Jhona Rosal for the match point,
before Musngi converted a reception.
“Magandang experience ang nakukuha nila. Sila mismo ang nagde-develop ng self esteem nila. Sa amin, dagdag na lang
as a head coach, as a tatay, ipu-push ko lang sila. Pero the way they play, sila na mismo ang gumawa ng character,”
Inoferio added.
Cuñada finished with a game-high 18 points built on 16 attacks and two kill blocks for the Lady Knights.
Kath Dela Cruz supplied 14 markers to go along with 24 excellent digs. Charm Simborio chipped 12 points spiked by a
pair of rejections, while Kristine Miranda chimed in 10 markers.
Musngi paced Letran with 14 excellent sets on top of four aces for five points. Julia Angeles protected the floor with 30
excellent digs and 20 excellent receptions.
The Lady Knights rose to a 1-2 slate, tying the Lady Altas, who possess an identical card.
Rosal topped Perpetual with 15 markers, with two from the service line. She laced it with 24 excellent digs and 18
excellent receptions that all went down the drain.
Tripoli contributed 14 points, while Dana Persa managed 13 markers in a losing cause. Alyssa Sangalang manned the
floor with 25 excellent digs and 20 excellent receptions.
Letran look to build on this win when they face San Sebastian. Meanwhile, Perpetual will take on San Beda. Both
matches will be played on Saturday, September 7, at the same venue.
Valdez, Creamline hold off
late Choco Mucho rally to
remain unscathed
Shrugging off a meltdown in the third frame, the Creamline Cool Smashers thwarted a late rally from sister team Choco
Mucho, surviving the Flying Titans in four sets, 25-12, 25-22, 19-25, 25-18, in the 2019 PVL Open Conference at the FilOil
Flying V Centre, Saturday evening.
The defending champions came riding the crest of their five-game winning surge. They raced out of the gates of the
marquee match-up with searing momentum to capture a two-sets-to-none buffer.
However, the Flying Titans stopped the Cool Smashers in their tracks in the third set. With Kat Tolentino and Maddie
Madayag at the wheel, Choco Mucho accelerated a 19-17 gap to a 23-18 spread to force fourth set.
“Unang-una sa lahat, cinompose muna namin yung sarili namin kasi medyo nawala kami sa game plan kasi we were
committing too many errors,” Creamline playmaker Jia Morado said.
“So, si Coach Tai [Bundit], sinabi sa amin na mag-meditate kami sa loob kasi pinaghandaan naman namin lahat ng
pwedeng mangyari; and maglaro din kami ng masaya kasi medyo naging tahimik din kami ng third set,” she added.
Jolted to their senses, the Cool Smashers played with renewed vigor and went for the jugular. They sprinted to a 22-14
cushion after Alyssa Valdez pummeled a free ball.
Though Celine Domingo lifted Creamline to a 24-15 edge several sequences later, the Flying Titans saved three match
points to keep their hopes alive. The Cool Smashers then turned to their battle-tested skipper yet again. Valdez
delivered the lethal blow, sending Choco Mucho down a three-game tailspin.
Valdez was all over the place, scattering a triple-double performance in the match that lasted for 115 minutes. She
erupted for a game-high 25 points – built on 21 attacks and two kill blocks – laced with 13 excellent digs and 11 excellent
receptions.
Domingo and Jema Galanza were also instrumental for Creamline, supplying 11 markers apiece. The former had two of
her team’s four blocks, while the latter scored all but two of her points via attacks.
Morado dished out 28 excellent sets to go along with four markers. Defensive specialist Kyla Atienza manned the floor
with 13 excellent digs and 12 excellent receptions.
The Cool Smashers remained spotless with a league-best 6-0 card. On the other hand,, the Flying Titans fell to a 2-3
slate, tied with Bali Pure.
Tolentino fortified Choco Mucho’s wall, netting half of her team’s 10 blocks. The former Ateneo stalwart also hammered
down 14 attacks for 20 markers.
Madayag chipped in 13 points, spiked by a pair of rejections. Arianna Angustia managed eight markers, while Kim
Gequillana notched 12 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions.
Creamline look to keep their record pristine when they face the veteran-laden PacificTown–Army Lady Troopers.
Meanwhile, Choco Mucho will try to snap out of their funk when they square off against the Petro Gazz Angels. Both
matches will be played on Wednesday at the same venue.
Tubiera, Bali Pure subdue
Chef’s Classics for second
win
Over a week after the breakthrough victory that quenched their 12-game losing drought, Bali Pure carved out
another morale-boosting win on Saturday night.
Menchie Tubiera and the Water Defenders dispatched Chef’s Classics, pouncing on an error-plagued Lady Red
Spikers late to complete a four-set triumph, 25-22, 20-25, 27-25, 25-22, in the PVL Open Conference at the
FilOil Flying V Centre.
In a close-quarter fourth set that swung to a 19-all deadlock, the Lady Red Spikers found themselves in a heap
of trouble. Following a string of errors from Chef’s Classics, the Water Defenders erected a 22-20 edge.
Nieza Viray then hammered down a through-the-block hit that stopped the bleeding for her team.
Unfortunately, miscues again spelled doom for the Lady Red Spikers, who slid to a 0-5 card.
Tubiera showed the way for Bali Pure, pouring in 18 points built on 16 attacks and two kill blocks. She also had
19 excellent digs to complete a double-double performance.
Grace Bombita supplied 13 markers on top of 16 excellent digs. Shirley Salamagos chipped 12 points, including
four kill blocks and a pair of service aces.
Miracle Mendoza managed nine markers — spiked by two aces — to go along with 11 excellent receptions.
Meanwhile, May Guillema tossed 22 excellent sets for the Water Defenders, who hiked their record to 2-3.
Bali Pure head coach Rommel Abella acknowledges that his team has found their groove following a pair of
wins within a two-week span. Still, he pointed out that his wards are playing far from what he sees in training.
“Masaya ako kasi nanalo na, nandoon na ulit kami sa right track. But siyempre kung satisfied? ‘Di pa ako
satisfied sa ginalaw namin kanina kasi malayong-malayo sa inensayo namin this past few days. Happy but not
satisfied,” Abella bared.
Viray dropped 22 attacks and two kill blocks for a game-high 24 points in a losing cause. She also collected 19
excellent digs.
Chef’s Classics skipper Justine Tiu had 12 markers, while Rebecca Cuevas dished out 20 excellent sets. Julia
Angeles manned the floor with 35 excellent digs and 16 excellent receptions.
Bali Pure will try to build from this win when they face the BanKo Perlas Spikers on Wednesday. Meanwhile,
Chef’s Classics seek their breakthrough win at the expense of the PacificTown–Army Lady Troopers on
Saturday. Both matches will be played at the same venue.
Kalei Mau, F2 Logistics
end Cignal’s Cinderella
run to reign supreme in
AFC
Fresh off a five-set affair in Game One last Saturday, the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers fended off another uphill battle. They
smashed the Cignal HD Spikers in straight-set fashion, 25-14, 25-16, 25-19, in Game Two of the 2019 PSL All-Filipino
Conference Finals, Tuesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
“Talagang very happy kami. Eto nakuha na namin yung talagang goal namin,” F2 Logistics head coach Ramil De Jesus
rejoiced. “Na-maximize namin ‘yung mga simpleng galaw ng kalaban. Nakita namin na hindi katulad last Saturday, lahat
ng nagawa namin, nandoon sila. Ngayon, mga simple lang na opensa, namamatay.”
Drawing strength from the playmaking of Kim Fajardo, the troika of Kim Kianna Dy, Kalei Mau and Majoy Baron pounced
on the HD Spikers’ sloppy reception, powering the Cargo Movers to a 23-10 cushion in the opening salvo.
Picking up where they left off in the match opener, Mau led another offensive thrust for the F2 Logistics in the ensuing
frame. From a slim 11-10 breather, the Cargo Movers unfurled a searing rally that widened the gap to a 23-16 spread
after the 6-foot-2 Fil-Hawaiian detonated a back row bomb.
In the decisive third set, the Cargo Movers held a precarious edge yet again at 12-11. Ara Galang though nailed the
momentum-swinging blow that catalyzed a 6-0 spurt, lifting the F2 Logistics to a commanding 18-11 cushion.
Though Ranya Musa stopped the bleeding for Cignal, Dy swiftly restored order for the Cargo Movers, who sprinted to a
23-18 advantage. Desiree Cheng then slammed the door shut at 24-19 before Mau locked the title for good with a
haymaker from the back row.
Mau was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the All-Filipino tourney. She hammered down 17 attacks and an ace en
route to a game-high 19 points.
Dy supplied 13 markers — built on nine attacks and four kill blocks while Galang and Baron contributed six markers
apiece. Dawn Macandili manned the floor with 20 excellent digs.
F2 Logistic playmaker Fajardo churned out the offense with 19 excellent sets for the Cargo Movers, who rained down 39
attacks. The product of De La Salle also had 10 excellent digs.
On the other hand, the prolific duo of Jovelyn Gonzaga and reigning Best Outside Spiker Rachel Daquis was limited to a
combined 15 markers. The former had eight attacks and an ace for a team-high nine points while the latter managed six
markers.
Alohi Robins-Hardy, who was hailed as the Best Setter of the conference, dished out 20 excellent sets laced with seven
markers — off five attacks, a block and an ace. Four-time Best Libero Jheck Dionela collected 18 excellent digs and five
excellent receptions.
Marasigan powers Cignal
to rousing Open
Conference debut as
Perpetual goes to 3-0
Fresh from their Reinforced Conference title conquest, the Cignal HD Spikers showed no signs
of a championship hangover, sweeping the National College of Business and Arts Wildcats, 25-
12, 25-14, 25-18, in the 2019 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference at the Paco Arena in Manila,
Sunday.
“Well actually, kulang kami. Sabi ko, kahit sinong maglalaro, kailangan magtrabaho talaga.
Mahina o malakas ang kalaban, dapat patay kung patay. Animal instinct kumbaga, kasi kung
mag-relax lang, masyadong mag enjoy, o balewalain, baka talunin kami,” said Cignal head
coach Dexter Clamor.
Despite missing the troika of AJ Pareja, Sandy Montero, and Peter Torres in their debut, the
HD Spikers had enough firepower to dominate the Wildcats.
Team captain Ysay Marasigan spearheaded the balanced offensive attack for Cignal with 10
attacks for 12 points while newcomer Alfred Valbuena chipped in nine points founded on six
hits, two aces, and a block. Vince Mangulabnan finished with 14 excellent sets while Manuel
Sumanguid had 11 excellent digs and 12 receptions.
On the other hand, NCBA, who dropped its third game in as many games, was led by McClane
Rogel’s seven points.
Cignal star Marck Espejo only played in the third set as he is still nursing a right shoulder injury.
Pareja, on the other hand, is still in Surigao del Sur for the BVR On Tour: Gran Ola while
Montero has yet to secure the green light to suit up for the HD Spikers.
Meanwhile, Torres will most likely miss the second conference as he is still recovering from a
procedure on his lungs.
Also bagging wins were University of Perpetual Help System DALTA and debuting PGJC-
Philippine Navy.
In the nightcap, the Altas continued their hot streak as they disposed of the NCBA-Philippine
Army Troopers in three sets, 25-21, 25-22, 25-10, to remain unbeaten in Group C.
“Actually, exposure namin ‘to for NCAA kasi we’re going to defend our title but I don’t expect
na ganito pala ang lalaruin ng mga bata. Army is very good, Coast Guard and FEU are very
good, it just so happened na yung luck nasa amin,” said Perpetual head coach Sammy Acaylar
on his squad’s rousing start.
Louie Ramirez paced the NCAA defending champions with 11 points while Ronniel Rosales had
10 markers which include four blocks to push Perpetual to a 3-0 card.
Hero Austria and Joebert Almodiel tallied nine and eight markers, respectively with the former
collecting nine receptions while the latter had six digs for the Altas.
Army skipper Randy Fallorina had seven points while Karl Ramirez and Benjaylo Labide finished
with six markers each for the Troopers who lost their second consecutive game in as many
games.
Greg Dolor and the Sea Lions handed the Arellano University Chiefs a straight-set drubbing,
25-23, 25-21, 25-18, in Group D.
Dolor led all scorers with 17 points built on 12 attacks, three blocks, and two aces while Kurl
Rosete made a living from the service line, tallying six aces to go along with these three blocks
for 13 markers.
National team member Joeven Dela Vega chipped in nine points while JD Diwa had eight to
help the Sea Lions notch their first win.
“Siyempre yung preparation namin, although long way to go pa, umpisa pa lang ito medyo
mahaba-haba pa yung tatahakin namin. Ang naging pagkapanalo namin is maaring ito yung
maging boost para magtuloy tuloy yung campaign namin sa eliminations,” said Navy head
coach Bernard Manarpaac.
Meanwhile, Christian Dela Paz finished with 15 points along with eight receptions for the
Chiefs who now has an even 1-1 win-loss slate.
Rookies shine as Malinis
powers Perpetual win over
FEU, Senoron leads UST
to bounce back win
Kennry Malinis and the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Altas scored a huge win on
Tuesday in Group C of the 2019 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference, pouncing on the short-handed
Hachiran-Far Eastern University Tamaraws in four sets, 26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23.
FEU missed the services of key players Jude Garcia and Owen Suarez, who are still on their
South Korea trip with the Cignal HD Spikers
“Malaking exposure ‘to sa team namin in preparation for the NCAA kasi we’re the defending
champions, so napakalaki ng FEU. ‘Di yan basta-basta na team,” said Perpetual head coach
Sammy Acaylar. “First runner-up yan sa UAAP. Alam mo naman ang UAAP, mga malalakas na
team. Happy ako kasi it’s a great exposure sa team namin.”
Facing a UAAP powerhouse, Altas rookies Malinis and Hero Austria stepped up for their team.
The former unleashed 17 hits and two blocks for 19 points; meanwhile, the latter finished with
13 markers to go along with 12 excellent receptions.
Ronniel Rosales and Louie Ramirez finished with 11 points each. EJ Casana churned the offense
with 27 excellent sets to lead Perpetual to a 2-0 slate, while also handing the Tamaraws a
harsh debut.
Team captain JP Bugaoan led FEU with 16 points. Mark Calado and Peter Quiel added 14
points apiece.
Suarez is expected to play in FEU’s next game against Army on September 8. On the other
hand, Garcia will finish his UAAP Men’s Beach Volleyball stint first before suiting up for the
Tamaraws this conference.
The University of Santo Tomas Tomas Tiger Spikers and debuting Easytrip also secured their
first victories in the conference.
Coming from a disheartening loss last Sunday to Arellano, the Tiger Spikers made sure to
bounce back, handing the Mapua University Cardinals a four-set beating, 25-22, 22-25, 25-14,
25-23, in the final match of the day.
“They’re getting used to the court already. Nagje-jell na. We joined this tournament for the
rookies eh,” said UST head coach Odjie Mamon.
UST rookie Lorenz Señoron made the most out of the match-up, finishing with 19 points
coming off 14 hits, four aces, and a block. Genesis Redido contributed 14 markers.
España’s twin towers Rainier Flor and Charlee Magpayo teamed up to roof the Cardinals’
attackers. The duo combined for a total of six blocks, which resulted in 18 points.
Lorence Cruz had 23 excellent sets ,while Lester Sawal tallied 17 excellent receptions and 10
digs.
Mapua, on the other hand, was led by John San Andres with 13 points on 10 attacks, two
blocks, and an ace. Alfredo Pagulong added 10 markers for the Cardinals, who fell to 0-2 in the
tournament.
After a lackluster campaign in the Reinforced Conference, Easytrip opened their Open
Conference with a sweet victory. They swept the Centro Escolar University Scorpions, 25-22,
25-18, 25-18, earlier in the day in Group B.
Easytrip only won one game during the first conference, outlasting Philippine Navy in a five-set
affair. The then-Raimol-backed squad posted a disappointing 1-10 win-loss slate.
“Based from last conference, ang ano lang namin, goal lang namin [is] to level up from what
we ended last conference,” said Easytrip head coach Jose Roque. “Little adjustments, kung ano
lang kulang namin dito, pupunan namin at the same time. Wala naman kaming expectation.
Basta every day we do our best lang.”
Red Christensen spearheaded the victory with 13 points –eight coming from hits – while also
tallying three aces and two blocks. Herman Eugenio chipped in eight markers for Easytrip,
while Milo Parcon added six.
Mardy Galang kick-started the offense with 21 excellent sets. Jackim Marajokie was a force on
the defensive end, tallying 15 excellent digs and 11 receptions.
Meanwhile, Nino Nazareno scored seven markers for the Scorpions, while Miguel Gonzales
and Carlo Villahermosa added five points each.
‘Di pa ako

excellent digs.
Panaga, Prado show way
as Petro Gazz get back on
track, deal Army first loss
Coming off a stinging loss to Creamline last Saturday, the Petro Gazz Angels dumped their frustrations on
PacificTown-Army, whipping the Lady Troopers in straight-sets, 25-15, 25-15, 25-19, in the 2019 PVL Open
Conference, Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
“Kumbaga for me, maganda, pero nakita ko na yung nakita namin ilabas eh, especially sa training. Pero yung
challenge sa’min ay kung paano ipakita sa game,” Petro Gazz head Arnold Laniog said. “Pero of course, marami
pang trabahuhin.”
Tied at 18-all, the Lady Troopers found themselves in a heap of trouble. They coughed up three consecutive errors
and set up a breakaway for the Angels, who then relied on their net defense to further stifle the opposition.
Following back-to-back kill blocks from Jeanette Panaga and Jonah Sabete, Jovie Prado delivered the match point
via a drop ball. Sabete then roofed Nene Bautista to seal their stunning sweep of PacificTown–Army.
Panaga and Prado showed the way for the Angels, who evened their card to a 2-2 slate.

Prado supplied 12 markers off nine attacks and two aces to go along with eight excellent receptions.

receptions.
On the other hand, PacificTown–Army – along with Air Force – came off a one-week league in Cagayan De Oro.
The Angels outperformed the fatigue-stricken Lady Troopers on all fronts, tallying a 43-32 differential in spikes, 7-2
in blocks, and 6-3 in aces.
“‘Yung Air Force at Army, galing sa one-week tournament, sila pa naglaban doon. Tinake advantage namin na
pagod sila at ‘di ganun naka-recover katawan nila,” Laniog added.
Royse Tubino was the lone double-digit scorer for the Lady Troopers, who absorbed their first loss in three
matches. She nailed 10 points – built on nine attacks and an ace – laced with seven excellent digs.
Fresh off a championship match with Cignal last night, Jovelyn Gonzaga managed seven attacks and an ace for eight
markers on top of 13 excellent digs.
Petro Gazz will next face the win-hungry Air Force Lady Jet Spikers, while PacificTown–Army take on the Motolite
Power Builders. Both matches will be played on Sunday at the same venue.
Myla Pablo, Motolite whip
Bali Pure for second win
Following their breakthrough win in the 2019 PVL Open Conference last Saturday, the Motolite Power Builders
cruised to their second-straight victory, throttling the Bali Pure Water Defenders in straight sets, 25-9, 25-20,
25-19, Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
“It feels good to win two games in a row even though we still have to work on a few things,” Motolite head
coach Godfrey Okumu said.
From a 17-all lock in the second set, Motolite unloaded six unanswered points that dropped the Water
Defenders down a 17-23 hole. Tots Carlos committed an error from the service area that halted the surge, but
the lead was high enough to snag a 2-0 set advantage.
Jumping to a 14-7 gap in the third frame, Motolite continued to step hard on the gas. They mounted a 21-12
spread after Iris Tolenada went on attack mode.
The Water Defenders then mustered a 7-2 spurt behind Grazielle Bombita to slice the deficit to four, 19-23.
Myla Pablo took matters into her own hands, however, hammering down consecutive hits to put the game
away.
“Sometimes we lead and then we let the opponents come and close in, and then we get the sense of urgency
which is not necessary. BaliPure played well today,” Okumu added.
Team captain Pablo led all scorers with 12 points, all but a pair coming from attacks. She was also the lone
twin-digit scorer for Motolite, who have tied Choco Mucho in third with an identical 2-1 card.
Isa Molde netted five of her team’s 11 service aces for nine markers. Ai Gannaban and Carlos supplied seven
and six points, respectively. The former had two blocks, while the latter collected 10 excellent digs.
Motolite playmaker Tolenada paced the offense with 17 excellent sets on top of four points. Ayel Estrañero
manned the floor with 11 excellent digs and nine excellent receptions.
On the other hand, the Water Defenders – who just snapped their 12-game losing streak – slid to a 1-3 card.
Bombita topped Bali Pure with 11 points off eight attacks and two blocks. Menchie Tubiera chipped eight
markers, while Shirley Salamagos added six.
Motolite shall face the Air Force Lady Jet Spikers on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Bali Pure will take on Chef’s
Classics Lady Red Spikers on Saturday. Both matches will be played at the FilOil Arena.
