Confidence Interval for the Population Mean:

4. For 11.09 tons = it is about 10.91

For .73 tons = it is about 11.27

10.

n1 = 5, n2 = 7, α = 0.1, t0.05,10 = 1.812.

x1 = 103 + 94 + 110 + 87 + 98 5 = 98.4

x2 = 97 + 82 + 123 + 92 + 175 + 88 + 118 7 = 110.714

x1 − x2 = −12.314s 2 1 = 1 4 [(1032 + · · · + 982 ) − 5(98.4)2 ] = 76.3

s 2 2 = 1 6 [(972 + · · · + 1182 ) − 7(110.714)2 ] = 1035.905

s 2 p = 4(76.3) + 6(1035.979) 5 + 7 − 2 = 652.063

t0.05,10 · sp s 1 n1 + 1 n2 = 1.812 · √ 652.107s 1 5 + 1 7 = 27.093

Hence the 99% CI for µ1 − µ2 is (−12.314 − 27.094, −12.314 + 27.094) = (−39.407, 14.779)

III. Confidence Interval for the Difference Between Two Population Means

𝜇𝐴 − 𝜇𝐵 = 𝑋, 𝑏𝑎𝑟 𝐴 − 𝑋, 𝑏𝑎𝑟 𝐵 ± 𝑍𝜎 𝐴 − 𝐵

For a confidence level then, m 95% to Z = 1.96

𝜇𝐴 − 𝜇𝐵 = (1400 − 1200) ± 1.96 ∗ 11.31

= 200 ± 22.16

177.8 <𝝁𝑨 − 𝝁𝑩< 222.16

3. (0.8351, 1.3049), New sleeping pill induced longer sleeping hours

Student 1 2 3 4 5 6
GPA 2NDSem 1.8 2.4 2.5 2.0 1.7 2.0
GPA 1ST SEM 2.0 1.9 3.0 2.5 2.4 2.0
di = X2i – X1i -.20 0.50 -0.50 -0.50 -0.70 0

Step 1: Compute for di = X2i – X1iH

Step 2: The d, bar and sd are computed as follows:

d,bar = (-.20+0.50+-0.50+-0.50+-0.70+0)/6 = -1.4

or using this online calculator, I was able to arrive at the mean(average) and standard deviation
easily:

https://www.easycalculation.com/statistics/standard-deviation.php

Step 3: Therefore, the 90% confidence interval for 𝜇𝑑 is given by

Given 1-a = 0.90 where a = 0.10; v= n-1 where v = 5 & t = 2.015

D,bar±t {(sd)/(√n)}

3.98 ±(2.015 ) (3.27979/√6) = 3.98 ± 2.698

=3.98 -2.698 <𝜇<3.98+2.698

=1.282 <𝜇< 6.678

Since the lower and upper boundary are both positive, the interval does not contain zero. It
only means that we are 90% confident that there is really a significant change in the grades
from the second semester of year 2005-2006 as compared to 1st semester of year 2006-2007.

IV: Confidence Intervals for Proportions

4.

𝐻0: 𝑝1 = 𝑝2 (𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑖𝑚) 𝐻1: 𝑝1 ≠ 𝑝2

p^1 = 124/150 = .8267 p^2 = 200/250 = .80

q^1 = .1733 q^2 = .20

a= 2.756

The 99% confidence interval for p1 – p2 is given by:

(.8267 - .80) ±2.756√[{(.8267)(.1733)}/150+{(80)(.20)}/250}]

0.0267 ±< p1 – p2 < 0.11

Since both the lower and upper limits are positive, it means that there is significant
difference in the proportion of servers and proportion of cashiers who are women.

III.

3. H0: u= 13 and H1: u> 13; Level of significance a= .05; Case 3: t=-.99997;
Critical region: t> 2.571; Decision: Do not reject H0; Conclusion: At a=.05,
there is no sufficient evidence that the average drop is not 13 points, thus, the
claim is sustained.

V.

3. x2= 145.7812; Critical Value :X2 .01,4)= 13.277; Decision reject H0;
Conclusion: at a=.01, performance in physics and performance in mathematics
are dependent.

VI. 5. Critical value .3448; reject H0; there is enough evidence to conclude that there is
less variability in the gold plating done by company 1 than in the gold plating done by
company 2.
