Aim
To decrease this density mud by adding water.

Theory
Drilling fluid is usually a mixture of water, bentonite, and a few chemicals. Sometimes use
oil instead of water for some special wells, and some reservoirs have low pressure so, it needs to
decrease the density of mud by adding water. Dilution considers the process of adding a liquid
phase to a drilling fluid to decrease the density. One of the major functions of a drilling fluid is
providing hydrostatic pressure to prevent formation fluids. The density of drilling fluid must be
such that the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the mud column will prevent flow into the wellbore.
This is the first requirement of any drilling fluid, and it must be provided for before considering
any other mud property or function. The equation for calculating hydrostatic pressure is
Hydrostatic Pressure, psi = (depth, ft.) (mud weight, lb./gal) (0.052) (Annis, 1974). Drilling fluid
is used to remove cuttings made by the bit and lift them to the surface and used to cool the bit.

Calibration
a) Remove the lid on the cup, and fill the cup water.
b) Put the lid back on the cup and remove the extra water.
c) Replace the balance arm on the base will knife-edge resting on the fulcrum.
d) The level vial should be centered when the rider is set on 8.33. If not, replace meter
still vail level is in the center.
e) The percentage error of mud balance was %0.36.

Procedure
a) Bring 250 cc of mud and measure the density by mud balance.
b) Pour the mud into the mixer.
c) Bring 11.11 cc of water and pour into the mixer.
d) Mix the mud and water together by a mixer.
e) Pour the mud into the mud balance and measure the density again.

Result and Discussion

Volume of water 11.11

Mud density after 8.75

The beaker was not graded well, and this caused misreading the levels of the mud when
measured by bicker, the water was not pure, and the mud balance was not work perfectly and its
cause to make error of the results and final density.

Conclusion
The goal of the lab test was to decrease the density of the mud by adding water; the density
of the required was given. The volume of the water was determined by using theoretical
calculation, and the way to make special drilling fluid.
