Proofs / narrations:
He, Allāh, said in the Qur’ān:
“Verily! We have sent it (this Qur’an) down in the night of al-Qadr (Decree, Power).
And what will make you know what the night of al-Qadr is? The night of al-Qadr
is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rūh [Jibrīl
(Gabriel)] by Allāh’s Permission with all Decrees, Peace! (All that night, there
is Peace and Goodness from Allāh to His believing slaves) until the appearance of
dawn.” - Al-Qadr.
Aisha (ra) reported: With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, the
Prophet (pbuh) used to tighten his waist belt (i.e. work harder) and used to
pray the whole night, and used to keep his family awake for the prayers.
[Bukhari]
Narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (pbuh) said:
Whoever established salah (prayer) on the night of Al Qadr with sincere faith
and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven;
and whoever observes Saum (fasts) in the month of Ramadhaan with sincere
faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will
be forgiven.
[Sahih Al-Bukhari, 1901]
Ibn Al Qayyim (May Allah have mercy upon him) said:
'If Lailatul Qadr was one night in the year, I would stand for qiyam for the
entire year so I obtain it. So what about one (night) in (just) ten nights?'
[Badaa'il fawaa'id, 1/55]

Important Actions:
1. Last 10 nights of Ramadan: From the 21st night (the Magrib after the
20th fast or the 21st taraweeh night) until Eid. Odd and Even nights!
2. Remain in I’tikaf: if you are unable to stay for all the 10 days/nights then
every time you go to pray in the mosque make the intention of itikhaf –
try to stay in the mosque as long as you can. Eg even if its isha and
taraweeh.
3. Worship all the 10 nights: if you worship all of the 10 nights you will
100% catch laylatul Qadr.
4. Best Dua of the last 10 nights:
A’ishah(ra) reported: I asked:
“O Messenger of Allah! If I realize Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree), what should
supplicate in it?” He (pbuh) replied, “You should supplicate:
Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun, tuhibbul-‘afwa, fa’fu ‘anni
O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness; so forgive me.” [At-
Tirmidhi].
5. Give charity: Any good act such as charity during Laylatul Qadr is
rewarded like you have done it for over 83 years. The Prophet(pbuh)
would increase in charity in these days! Have money put aside for each of
these nights – the reward will be multiplied by over 30,000 times! So
donating £10 per day is as if you've donated over £300,000!
6. Eat light: As you will be staying up until Fajr, the more you eat, the harder
it will be for you to stay up and the less productive you will be!
7. Hydrate well: Keep some water with you at all times. This will help you
stay up, feel energised and refreshed and have a clearer mind.
8. Complete all tasks beforehand: Make arrangements to clear as many of
your pending tasks as possible or make a plan for tackling them later. This
way, we are free to worship during the 10 nights without being distracted
by worldly tasks.
9. Show exemplary character: The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Nothing will be
heavier on the Day of Resurrection in the Scale of the believer than good
manners. Allah hates one who utters foul or coarse language.” [At-
Tirmidhi]. We must not argue, swear, backbite, slander or gossip –
especially with out parents.
3
10. No time wasting: self explanatory – leave social media, tv etc – if you get
bored or need a break then listen to Quran or Seera or emaan boosting
videos.
11. Have a dua list ready that includes personal duas and prophetic duas.
(find below a template dua list).
12. Recite Quran and contemplate on the meaning of at least one ayah. Eg
Surah Ikhlas (Qul huwallahu Ahad..) x 3 = reward of the entire Quran.
13. Send plenty of Salam on the Prophet(pbuh)
14. Constant Adhkar / remembrance of Allah
15. Contacting relatives even over the telephone
16. Provide food for those who are fasting
17. Forgive anyone who has wronged you
18. Give a short reminder to family/friends/others
19. Always make this Dua when opening fast:
Dhahabadh’dhama'u wabtal'latil-'urooqu, wa thabatal-'ajru 'insha'Allah.
The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened and the reward is confirmed, if Allah
wills.
Example timetable:
09:30 pm – 10:00 pm: Break fast (dates) and pray Maghrib. Afterwards pray
the 2 raka’ahs of sunnah and as many nawafil (voluntary) prayers in sets of 2
raka’ahs as you can manage. Help set the table, put dates out for everyone and
water – ask your parents if they need any help.
10:00 pm – 10:15 pm: Eat light to have optimum energy for worship. Avoid
heavy and fried foods, as they will make you lethargic. Make your donation
online to charity so you don't lose this reward.
10:15 pm – 10:30 pm: Get ready to pray Isha’ and Taraweeh. Pray 2 raka’ahs
tahiyyatul wudu after every wudu. Wear your best clothes and put on attar, use a
miswaak and comb your hair, beard etc.
10:30 pm – 12:00 am: Pray Isha’ and Taraweeh. Pray 2 raka’ahs of tahiyyatul
masjid upon arriving at the masjid. And the 2 sunnah after Isha’.

Sisters specific:
As for sisters who have their time of the month during these nights, do not feel
disheartened. Remember, the only thing you cannot do is pray and fast. You
can still:
1) Seek lots of forgiveness.
2) Give some charity.
3) Make lots of Du'a.
4) Engage in lots of Dhikr.
Lastly, make these ten nights as if they are your farewell 10 nights before you
depart (they could just be!).
May Allah enable you to have the best 10 nights and grant you the best of both
worlds!
