Caution

1. It may happen that ship’s position received in SIS-5 is different with ship’s

real position. It should be used for navigation data after visual checking

and combination with Radar.

External GPS data should be used over NMEA0183 (RS-422) IEC 61162

version 2.0.

2. When external GPS data format, which is not recommended by IMO is

used, it may cause to dangerous accident such as ship’s collision and

vessel traffic control.

3. Be sure to read carefully safety guidelines and indications before

operation for this product and related documents

1. General

1.1. Outline of System

The AIS should improve the safety of navigation by assisting in the efficient navigation of
ships, protection of the enviroment, and operation of Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), by
satisfying the following functional requirements:
1. in a ship-to-ship mode for collision avoidance;
2. as a means for littoral States to obtain information about a ship and its cargo;
3. as a VTS tool, i.e. ship –to-shore (traffic management).

Automatic Identification System is composed with Transponder and MKD (Minimum

Keyboard Display), The AIS is capable of providing to ships and to competent authorities,
information from the ship, automatically and with the required accuracy and frequency, to
facilitate accurate tracking. Transmission of the data is implemented with the minimum
involvement of ship’s personnel and with high level of availability.

The increase of number of ships those equiped with Transponder and the object related to
Navigation can enhance the safety of Navigation. Therefore IMO desides that all ships
those are under SOLAS regulation must be equiped Automatic Identification System in a
defined time schedule step by step. Such an obligation will be enforced as of 1st July
2002 depending on ships’ type and size (for all new building vessels) until 1st July 2008
for all ships constructed before 1st July 2002 but not engaged on International voyage.
All conventional ships of 300 gross tonnage and over engaged on international voyages
should be equipped with AIS on a date of the first safety equipment survey after 01 July
2004, but not later than 31st December 2004.

<Caution>
It may happen that screen and others illustrated in operation manual can
! be different with real screen. Reference screen illustrated in operation
manual can be subject to change according to composition of parts and
environmental setting, software and hardware related with system can
also be subject to change under the condition that are no effect to the performance of AIS.

5
1.2. Features

The SIS-5 is an universal shipborne AIS (classA) capable of:

- providing information automatically and continuosly to a competent authority and
other ships, without involvement of ship’s personnel;
- receiving and processing information from other sources including that from a
competent authority and from other ships;
- responding to high priority and safety related calls with a minimum of delay; and
- providing positional and manoeuvring information at a data rate adequate to
facilitate accurate tracking by a competent a competent authority and other ships.

It is fit for SOLAS convention defined in Universal AIS Class A and complies with IMO
(International Maritime Organization) MSC (Maritime Safety Committee) Resolution74(69)
Appendix 3, A.694(17), ITU-R M.1371-1 and DSC ITU-R M.825 and also complies with
IEC 61993-2 (Type Test Standard), IEC 60945 (EMC and environment condition).

SIS-5R consists of VHF and GLONASS/GPS antenna, Transponder Unit, MKD (Minimum
and Keyboard Display), and several associated units, including options. Transponder
Unit includes VHF transmitter, two SOTDMA (Self Organized Time Division Multiple
Access) receiver DSC(Digital Selective Calling) in two independent VHF Channel,
Channel 70 Receiver, Interface, Communication processor, internal GLONASS/GPS
receiver. MKD device consists of 5” LCD monochrome screen, MKD and keyboard for
controlling Transponder.
GLONASS/GPS board Built-in transponder unit is a receiver system utilizing as a UTC
standard for system synchronization to prevent problems among multi-users. It also
may provide position, COG and SOG when external GPS fails.
The AIS, SIS-5, is capable of operating in a number of modes:
- an “autonomons and continous” mode for operation in all areas. This mode is
capable of being switched to/from one of the following alternate modes by a
competent authority;
- an “assigned” mode for operation in an area subject to a competent authority
responsible for traffic monitoring such that the data transmission interval and/or
time slots may be set remotely by that authority; and
- a “polling” or controlled mode where the data transfer occurs in response to
interrogation from a ship or competent authority.

6
The MKD LCD Screen displays all information required for dynamic data, passive data,
navigational data and safety related messages. Information and message is
automatically updated according to ITU-R M.1371 (e.g., static information every 6 minutes
or when data has been amended and on request, dynamic information dependent on
speed and course alteration)

1.2.1. Principal Information

AIS can contribute the safety of navigation by exchanging navigation data automatically
between ships and coastal station or between ship and ship.
z Static Information
- IMO Number (When available)
- MMSI(Maritime Mobile Service Identity)
- Call Sign and Name
- Length and Beam
- Ship’s Type
- The position of GNSS Antenna on a ship (aft of bow and port or starboard of

7
1.2.2. Principal Feature

- The object feature can be detected by AIS Transponder and it will be displayed as
either Class A or Class B.

- When it needs communication for safety, it would be possible for the object
being received, and it consists of two types. One is broadcasting type for
communicating to all objects and the other one is for communicating to a part
of objects. When it is communicated to respondent objects, it can be
possible by using usable digit, English letters and special symbols.

In the above initial screen, press OWN button to see all the information on own

ship, spreading over 3 (three) pages. Searching for each page is using button.

The first page contains static information such as ship name, MMSI number, IMO number,
call number and also indicates vessel type, ETA, destination etc.
The second page handles latitude, longitude, COG(Course Of Ground), SOG(Source Of
Ground), Heading value, ROT(Rate Of Turn), status on navigation etc.

23
The third page is indicating the information of relating GNSS and shows Internal GPS
position information and External GPS position information.

F3 F2
In this screen, If press PLOT it goes back to Plotter screen, If press LIST or
