Over this simple I-IV-V blues in G, it might first appear that Kirk is using G major pentatonic
(G A B D E) or G minor pentatonic (G Bb C D F) but he’s actually moving between fragments
of both scales, tweaking and adding target notes to fit the changing chords. This is exactly
what we mean when we say that blues soloing is all about the chords, NOT scales.

For example, in bars 15-16 he’s using G minor pentatonic over G7, but notice how he bends
that first Bb slightly sharp. At the end of the phrase, down on the 5th string, he resolves the
low Bb up to the B (chord tone: the major 3rd of G7).

Or check out bar 6... this is essentially major pentatonic over G7, but he adds the F note,
giving more of a wider Mixolydian sound. And then he sneakily adds the minor 3rd (Bb),
sliding up into the B.
Conversely, in bars 21-22, that little shape LOOKS like G major pentatonic... the B.B. King
shape we talked about before, with the root on the 2nd string and the major 6th (E) on the
3rd string. But the B note won’t work here, so Kirk plays Bb instead. It’s now a kind of hybrid
C Mixolydian kind of note group. Most importantly, it’s not a scale. It’s a phrase built around
chord tones, joined together with scale notes!
