Intellectual Disability
Intellectual Disability
1. Case summary
The eight years old girl was diagnosed intellectual disability with comorbidity of
trichotillomania was observed, but focused on symptoms of intellectual disability only for case
study. The following Symptoms of disability were reported on the basis of observations and
her mother’s interview. Deficits in learning academic skills, deficits in reading and writing,
support needed in some activities, delayed developmental mile stones, no conversation skills
or sense and adaptive functioning deficits. DSM-5 criteria also confirmed the above mentioned
symptoms for intellectual disability.
Difficulty for individual. The girl cannot report problems herself because lack of
conversation skills or sense of surrounding environment. She needs complete assistance in
some activities of daily life and has difficulty in solving mathematical problems and writing,
as mother reported. She was slower than her siblings in all activities.
Difficulties for families and friends. Client’s family was supportive and they have
accepted client’s disability. Apart from this her family was suffering especially her mother, her
Mother was highly concerned and stressed because of her daughter’s health, as she need
assistance in daily life activities and her mother have to take care of her all the time. So she
cannot focus on other activities. These problems were also effecting emotional well-being of
her mother. Evidences also support the suffering of families. The majority of this research has
involved in maternal well-being with a consensus that raising a child with intellectual
disabilities increases stress levels, negatively affects family functioning, and increases
depression. These findings are increased if the child has coexisting behavioral problems (M.
Nehring, 2011).
Misconceptions. Misconceptions are usually held due to lack of awareness (M. Amna,
2011). The two major misconceptions about intellectual disability are possessing demons,
spirituality and bad deeds of parents. People stigmatize disability as person is possessed by
demons or have special god gifted abilities and labeled them as “Allah waly” especially in
Pakistani culture. People consider disability of child as punishment for parents due to their bad
deeds in their past (white swan foundation).
Media representation. Media reported intellectual disability less frequently than other
disorders. Evidences also support this like in British population also media coverage is more
on autism and Down’s syndrome than intellectual disability. But when it is reported in movies,
both positive and negative sides reported in parallel fashion. Positive side showed that they can
be educated and work in mainstream like others (I am Sam, 2001). Negative side showed that
they are abused socially, emotionally and physically more than others (Dance me to my song,
1998).
