QUANTITIES, UNITS, AND MEASUREMENT

Distinguish between Base Quantity and Derive Quantity

1. Measure the length of your desk, using :
a. The width of your span. ( hand units )
length of desk = …………….. hand units
b. Your ruler ( centimetres )
length of desk = …………….. cm
c. What is the area of your desk ?
d. What is the colour of your desk?
2. What is meant by a Physical quantity?

5. What is meant by units?
6. Quantities which are usually used in physics are differentiated into two, those are:
a. Basic quantities are quantities the units of which are predetermined and the are not derived
from another quantities, for example: length (m)
b. Derived quantities are the quantities that are formed or derived from one or more basic
quantities, for example area (m2)
7. Mention 6 examples of basic quantities and derived quantities

8. Standard Unit and Non-standart Unit

Standart unit: unit which has been acknowledged internationally, so it can be used in all
countries in the world. For examples: meter, kilogram, and liter
Non-standart unit: unit which is not acknowledged internationally, so it is only used in certain
countries. For examples: cubic, fathom, span.
