Chinese Five Element Theory Introduction
Five Element theory formed the fundamental basis of
systems thinking of the ancient Chinese.

The interest, study & practice of Traditional Chinese
Medicine, Taoism & martial arts has migrated this theory
and it’s practices to the Western world.

Understanding the emotions of the Five Elements and


their interactions can help us to fulfill our potential in life.
Chinese Five Elements
History:
• Came into maturity in the second or first century BCE during the
Han dynasty.
• Referenced in texts 2500 yrs old: I Ching Classic of Changes pre-
2nd century BC and numerous other ancient and current texts
Classic Uses:
• Military Strategy, Political Strategy
• Martial Arts
• Tai Qi, Qi Gong + other meditation practices
• Feng Shui – harmonizing environment
• Traditional Chinese Medicine - Acupuncture/Herbs/Lifestyle

affects us and we affect our environment.

• Our world and everything in it can be divided into 5 inter-


connected and dynamic components – The Five Elements.
Five Elements: Organs & Emotions
FIRE
Wood: Liver + Gall Bladder - Anger Joy/sadness

Fire: Heart + Small Intestine - Joy + Sadness WOOD EARTH


Anger Worry

Earth: Spleen + Stomach - Worry + Thinking

Metal: Lungs + Large Intestine - Grief WATER METAL


Fear Grief
Water: Kidneys + Bladder - Fear + Survival
2 Main Cycles: Generating & Control Summer

1. Generating (nourishing) Cycle: Each element


FIRE
produces + supports next element: Joy/sadness Late
Spring Summer
Water > Wood > Fire > Earth > Metal > Water
This cycle can be looked at as the seasons passing, as each WOOD EARTH
element is associated with a different season.

Frequently we attribute joy to something achieved or acquired.

Spontaneity – lose yourself in what you are doing. Being so


present we forget ourselves and what we were doing.

Learning – When we learn something new, joy is often the


experience – a reward for seizing an opportunity.

Ultimate expression of joy is bliss – the experience of oneness &


connectedness with all that is.
