INDUSTRIAL PROFILE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION:
The largest source of energy on our planet comes from the sun. With the immediate need for
clean, safe and renewable energy affecting every aspect of our lives, many pioneering
businesses have delved into the industry built on the idea of harnessing the sun’s energy to
power everything from homes to business to farm equipment and even transportation. With
this boom in the demand for solar energy this new industry was born and is experiencing
great growth which, in turn, is creating tons of great new job opportunities in the public and
private sectors. There are even some projects such as Winter Isle and The Sea Colonies
project that aim to create self sustaining societies that are completely off of the grid and rely
solely on solar or other alternative sources of energy.
India is densely populated and has high solar insulation, an ideal combination for using solar
power in India. In the solar energy sector, some large projects have been proposed, and a
35000 km2 (14000 sq mi) area of the Desert has been set aside for solar power projects, of
sufficient to generate 700 to 2100 GW. Also India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy
has released the JNNSM phase 2 Draft Policy, by which the Government aims to install 10
GW Solar power and of the 10 GW target, 4 GW would fall under the central scheme and the
remaining 6GW under various State specific schemes.
In July 2009, India unveiled a US$ 19 billion plan to produce 20 GW of solar power by 2020.
Under the plan, the use of solar-powered equipment and applications would be made
compulsory in all government buildings, as well as hospitals and hotels. On 18 November
2009, it was reported that India was ready to launch its National Solar Mission under the
National Action Plan on Climate Change, with plans to generate 1000 MW of power by
2013. From August 2011 to July 2012, India went from 2.5 MW of grid connected
photovoltaic to over 1000 MW.
According to a 2011 report by BRIDGE TO INDIA and GTM Research, India is facing a
perfect storm of factors that will drive solar photovoltaic (PV) adoption at a “furious pace
over the next five years beyond”. The falling prices of PV panels, mostly from China but also
from the US have coincided with the growing cost of grid power in India. Government
support and ample solar resources have also helped to increase solar adoption, but perhaps
the biggest factor has been need. India, “as a growing economy with a surging middle class,
is now facing a severe electricity deficit that often runs between 10% and 13% of daily need”.
India is planning to install the World’s largest Solar Power Plant MW capacity near Sāmbhar
Lake in Rajasthan.
On 16th May 2011, India’s first 5MW of installed capacity solar power project was registered
under the Clean Development Mechanism. The project is in Sivagangai village, Sivaganga
district, Tamil Nadu.
INDUSTRIAL BACKGROUND:
The Indian Solar industry has immense potential for a tropical country like India where
around 45% of households, mainly rural ones, do not have access to electricity, according to
the “Indian Solar Energy Market Outlook2012”. The industry has witnessed rapid growth
over the past few years and is projected to grow further in future. As India is blessed with
ample solar radiation and most part of the country receives 300 to 330 sunny days in a year.
India today receives solar energy equivalent to more than 5000 Trillion kWh per year, which
is far more than its total annual energy consumption. India's geographical location, large
population and government support are assisting it to become one of the most rapidly
emerging solar energy markets in the world.
Gradually India is becoming a favourite investment destination for both local and global
players. Today Indian economy has the second-fastest rate of increase in GDP in the world -
7.1%. The country accounts for one thirds of the world's population without access to
electricity. The situation arises despite several initiatives and policies to support poor
households. Five different ministries have structurally handled the Indian energy sector from
which among them the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. India is probably the only
country in the world with most dedicated ministry for renewable. The country ranks sixth in
the world in terms of total energy consumption and needs to accelerate development of the
energy sector to meet its growth aspirations. Although the country is rich in coal and
abundantly endowed with renewable energy in the form of solar, wind, hydro and bio-energy,
India has very small hydrocarbon reserves (0.4% of the world's total). Being a net importer of
energy, more than 35% of the country's primary energy needs are ensured through import.
Today with growing advancement and pace of development India needs more power. Not
only to cover its daily power shortfalls (several hours per day), but also to support its
economic development. In 2008 According to CEA, the peak demand was 120 gig watts of
power, while only 98 gig watts could be supplied. According to an analysis by the Indian PV
project developer Aston field, quoting the President of India Energy Review, this deficit is
likely to grow to 25 gig watts by 2012. The targeted share of renewable energy is 24% for
2031, with the amount of solar energy increasing to 56 gig watts of installed power.
In India Demand for solar products has been rapidly rising for the recent years, especially in
rural areas, and is expected to continue growing substantially during the period (2011-2013).
Most popular applications in India are Solar street lighting systems, home lighting systems,
power plants, solar cookers, solar pumps and solar water heating systems. The number of
solar water heating systems is projected to grow at a CAGR of about 22% between 2011 and
2013.
Many states have started promoted solar based applications by giving incentives and tax
savings. In order to boost the Solar Industry States like Gujarat and Rajasthan have
formulated transparent and progressive regulatory framework. Besides, states like Delhi,
Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Chandigarh are promoting solar energy in
rural, urban and semi urban areas. After all the efforts the average electricity consumption in
India is still among the lowest in the world at just 630 kWh per person per year, but this is
expected to grow to 1000 kWh within five years.
Speaking of big numbers and energy consumption, every month 8-10 million new mobile
phones are connected in India. This is an interesting market segment for solar PV as well:
thousands of new GSM poles will be needed across the country. In 1976 The Solar Energy of
India (SESI), established having its Secretariat in New Delhi is the Indian Section of the
International Solar Energy Society (ISES).
All aspects of renewable energy, including characteristics, effects and methods of use are
covered and it provides a common ground to all those concerned with the nature and
utilization of this renewable non-polluting resource. With the distribution of 10 million solar
lanterns in remote areas and to nomadic populations, India could save 500 million litres of
kerosene a year.
The Indian Solar Energy sector has been growing rapidly, in the past few years, majorly due
to Governments initiatives such as tax exemptions and subsidies. Due to technical potential of
5,000 trillion kWh per year to minimize the operating cost, Solar Power is considered the best
suited energy source for India. Today the Solar power has an installed capacity of 9.84 MW
which is about less than 0.1%, currently total installed renewable energy stands at 13,242.41
MW as per MNRE.
India Consumes 3.7% of the world's commercial energy making it has the 5th largest
consumer of energy globally. Total installed capacity of 144912 MW. India is endowed with
rich solar energy resource Over 5,000 trillion kilowatts of solar energy in a year. The average
intensity of solar radiation received on India is 200 MW/km square.
The government has mandated that 12% of all electricity is to come from renewable sources
by the year 2010. The Indian solar power production is slated to grow to 500 MW by 2012.
Use of solar energy for heating water is one of the oldest and most mature renewable energy
technologies. The two predominant technologies that are used are Flat Plate Collectors (FPC)
and Evacuated Tube Collectors (ETC). Solar Water Heater installations are witnessing a
rapid growth throughout the world. Globally, the industry has been growing at 15% annually.
China and European Union are the two largest markets of solar water heaters. India accounts
for around 1.5% of the total installed capacity and 1% of the sales during 2008.

World-over, the residential sector has the largest market share in solar water heater market.
In 2004, around 40 million households worldwide i.e. 2.5% of the total 1.6 billion households
globally, were estimated to be using solar water heaters. In China, it is estimated that 98% of
the annual solar water heaters sales are contributed by the residential sector. Overall 10%
Chinese households are estimated to be using solar water heaters; this percentage is expected
to go up to 30% by 2020. In Europe, 90% of the installed SWH capacity is in the residential
sector. In Europe majority of the residential systems are single-family homes, while in China
a large number of residential solar water heaters are installed on multi-storey buildings. In
China, almost 90% of the solar water heaters are installed in the urban areas.
The potential customers of Solar Energy installation fall into these categories:
In 1839, a major milestone in the evolution of solar energy happened with the defining of the
photovoltaic effect. A French scientist by the name Edmond Becquerel discovered this using
two placed in an electrolyte. After exposing it to the light, electricity increased.
energy use. First in 1893 the first solar cell was introduced. The cell was to be wrapped with
selenium wafers. Later in 1887 there was the discovery of the ultraviolet ray capacity to cause
a spark jump between two electrodes. This was done by Heinrich Hertz. Later, in 1891 the
first solar heater was created.
Past few years have seen enormous investment in utility-scale solar plants, with records for
the largest frequently being broken. As of 2012, the history’s largest solar energy plant is the
Golmud Solar Park in China, with an installed capacity of 200 megawatts. This is arguably
surpassed by India’s Gujarat Solar Park, a collection of solar farms scattered around the
Gujarat region, boasting a combined installed capacity of 605 megawatts.
Planned and unplanned Solar Power outages of 4 to 10 hours a day for households and
business are common. Upwards of 40% of electricity is "stolen" in India - not paid for -
thereby increasing the cost of electricity for the paying consumers.
Solar-based energy today accounts for only 0.5% of that number with a grid-interactive (grid-
hybrid) solar power totalling only 2.12 MW from just 33 such installations.
The Indian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is targeted to grow at 8% over the next ten years.
At this rate, power demands may rise from the present 120 GW to 315-335 GW by 2017.
Consumer demand is growing at 14% over the next 10 years - faster than the GDP rate.
Photovoltaic cell (PV) production grew 85%; 7.9 GW were added worldwide.
The top five PV cell producing countries in2008 were China, Germany, Japan,
Taiwan, and the US cumulative worldwide capacity was 15 GW.
Worldwide PV installation reaches a record high of 5.95 GW in 2008. Spain led the
world in new solar installation in 2008 (2011 MW), then Germany (1500 MW), US
(342 MW), Korea (274 MW), Italy (258 MW), and Japan (230 MW).
Germany(5.3 GW) leads the world in cumulative solar installation, Spain(3.0 GW),
Japan(2.2 GW), and US(1.6 GW)
In the US, California had the most installation (178.6 MW), then New Jersey
(22.5MW), Colorado (21.6 MW), Nevada (14.9 MW), and Hawaii (11.6 MW).

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
India recently had opened tenders for 500 MW of Photovoltaic Solar Energy with 5
MW being the fixed size of a plant. Government has got bids for 10,000 MW or 20
times the amount to be bid according to the recent reports. This implies that the PV
portion of the Phase 1 of JNNSM will go for discount bidding. In layman terms it
means that the projects will be awarded to companies willing to build the plants at a
discount to the CERC mandated FIT rate of Rs 17.91/K WH.
As the Indian government has announced the incentives for manufacturing solar cells
and panels earlier this year, it has targeted meeting 10 % of the country's power needs
through renewable energy by 2012.
Tata BP Solar, a joint venture between the Tata Group of India and BP Solar of the
United Kingdom, operates one of the oldest solar-energy equipment manufacturing
plants in India, near Bangalore which would be expanded now, at an additional
investment of $100 million.
India is ranked 7th worldwide for solar photovoltaic (PV) cell production and secure
9th rank in solar thermal power generation. Indian Solar capacity is growing rapidly
due to the entry of various private players in manufacturing of solar energy
equipment. According to analyst and scientists the Indian solar energy sector is
estimated to grow at 25% year on year in next few years.
Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) in 2022 the Target of 20GW of
Solar Power. The current installed capacity is only 9500 MW which gives vast
opportunity for exploitation of renewable energy sources Indian Government is
striving hard to push the solar power industry to make India a global leader by
introducing grid based incentives and concessions in various duties in the recent
budget (2010-11).
For developing countries like India, Greenpeace has proposed a feed-in-tariff system which
would provide the financing to enable massive renewable energy uptake. The scheme
proposes a mechanism where the additional coats of renewable energies are financed by a
combination of new sect oral emissions trading mechanisms and direct finance from
technology funds to be developed in the Copenhagen climate deal.
Especially in developing countries, renewable energy investment and hence total generation
costs, remains higher than those of existing coal or gas –fired power stations and this is
unlikely to change in the next five to ten years. To bridge investment and cost gap between
conventional fossil fuel based power generation and renewable energy, a support mechanism
is requires. The Feed in Tariff Support Mechanism (FTSM) is a concept conceived by
Greenpeace international. The aim of the mechanism is to expand the use of renewable
energy in developing countries with financial support from industrialised nations. It is a
mechanism which can allow for rapid deployment of renewable energy technologies via a
new sect oral no-lose mechanism or through a technology transfer fund under the United
Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change.

RAW MATERIALS
Raw materials are sold in what is called the factor market. Raw materials are so important to
the production process that the success of a country's economy can be determined by the
amount of natural resources the country has within its own borders.
STAINLESS STEEL:
Stainless steel is used as both the inner tank material and outer tank material.
Stainless steel hot water tanks in direct thermo siphon systems. Thermo siphon systems take
advantage of the physical phenomenon that hot water is less dense than cold water. Thermo
siphon systems consist of tanks with an inner and an outer shell. Stainless steel is an excellent
candidate material for both. The inner tank is in permanent contact with the domestic hot
water, which should have drinking water quality. Hygienic considerations make stainless
steel a good choice. Other materials can develop cracks, which may favour the proliferation
of germs. Corrosion in these materials may lead to rough surfaces, which are susceptible to
the growth of bacteria and adhesion of biofilms. Corrosion can adversely affect the quality of
the water. Stainless steel solutions avoid all these problems from the outset. The outer tank
serves as containment for both the hot water tank and the thermal insulation, which reduces
heat loss during the night. As it is permanently exposed to the elements, the outer tank should
also be resistant to atmospheric pollutants.
CHEMICALS:
Polyol
Isocyanate
Polymeric polyols are generally used to produce other polymers. They are reacted
with isocyanates to make polyurethanes used to make mattresses, foam insulation for
appliances, home and automotive seats, elastomeric shoe soles, fibres and adhesives.
These chemicals used in supreme solar water heater to join inner tank and the outer tank by
foam insulation.
GI:
Galvanized iron is iron which has been coated in a layer of zinc to help the metal
resist corrosion. Steel can also be galvanized. When metal is going to be used in an
environment where corrosion is likely, it is often galvanized so that it will be able to
withstand the conditions. Even with galvanization, however, corrosion will eventually start to
occur, especially if conditions are acidic.
Supreme Solar Water Heater with G.I Inner Tank is powder coated. Outer tank has stand and
future excellent heat absorption and minimum heat emission characteristics. The range of
Solar Water Heater with G.I Inner Tank is easy to handle and carry from one location to
another. Furthermore, these products are available with PUF insulation and ETC tube, which
generates 60°C to 80°C hot water on clear sunny days.
VACUUM TUBES:
Vacuum tubes used in supreme solar water heater systems are imported from china.
Solar Vacuum tubes are ideal for applications such as solar hot water and space heating in
Northern Climates. They are also ideal for solar pool heating applications as they can heat the
pool even during periods of cloudy conditions. The solar evacuated tubes provide heat energy
even when the temperatures are -40. Supreme solar pvt ltd., imports High quality, high
power solar vacuum tubes from China.
