CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Education is the most important development instrument and needs the unique
attention of both government and non-government industries to growth and
development. This reality is evident from advanced and underdeveloped country
statistics, as all poor nations have low levels of literacy. It is duly registered with the
Government of Pakistan and is one of the leading NGOs accredited by the Pakistan
Centre for Philanthropy for excellent practices in the field of economic governance,
governance and distribution of programmes. Education is the most important
developmental tool and requires special attention by the government and non-
government sectors alike for growth and development. This fact is evident from the
statistics of developed and under-developed countries as all poor countries have low
literacy rates. Pakistan is also among the list of developing countries where education
has never been considered a major priority.
This lack of focus by the government has created large gaps, therefore private
sector has emerged as a leader in education over the past few years. However, private
sector education providers have mostly concentrated on profits and they have
presented education as a business, thus leaving behind millions of Pakistani children
to attend low quality private and government schools or remain out of school.
Education consider as strong development tool of society. It is considered one of the
main pillars of a society (Adams, 1998). It is an established fact that in the world only
those nations have made progress and development which have a sound education
system (Ball, 1990). Education helps to create awareness for good deal with the
challenges and also helps to generate ideas and creativity. Thus educationally sound
nations play leadership role in the world (American Federation of Teachers, 2000).
Education is the main sector of development which requires special attention
from the government and non-government sectors. This fact is evident from the
statistics of developed and under-developed countries as all poor countries have low
literacy rates. Pakistan is also among the list of developing countries where education
has never been given preferable part of government. Education is necessary for all
human beings. Poverty is one of the obstacles that prevent children from attending
school. READ Foundation provides free education to such children, especially
orphans.
The Orphan Sponsorship Programme started in 1997 with 374 children. READ
Foundation today helps 9,960 children get a quality education through financial
assistance from kind-hearted individuals, philanthropic organisations and socially
responsible businesses. More than 1,000 orphans enrol in schools each year.
READ (Rural Education and Development) Foundation is an NGO focused
on creating opportunities for children affected by poverty to go to a good school. It is
not-for-profit organization. To this end READ build new and renovate old dilapidated
schools, as well as provide full scholarships to orphaned children who are otherwise
unable to access education. Kafwa (2005) argued that compared to non-orphans,
orphaned students are more likely to be malnourished, more likely to drop out of
school and have limited access to health social services as well as being prone to
exploitation. They started this important work in 1994 with just one teacher and one
classroom, but now almost 25 years later, they are providing an education to over
100,000 children across 382 of our own schools.
So there is a need to find out that how READ foundation is playing role in
promotion of Orphans’ education at Dist. Kotli.argued that compared to non-orphans,
orphaned students are more likely to be malnourished, more likely to drop out of
school and have limited access to health social services as well as being prone to
exploitation. These challenges create emotional stress making the pupils difficult to
concentrate and learn in the classroom. Bettman (2006) pointed out that millions of
children of children were experiencing poverty, enormous mental stress from
witnessing illness and death of their beloved ones and profound sense of insecurity.
Kolthari(2012) argues that one of the major influences affecting orphans and
vulnerable children is their access to the child grant. Every child is entitled to a child
grant however, many orphans and vulnerable children don’t have the correct
paperwork in place in order to access it.
Statement of the Problem
Orphans’ education has received considerable attention across the globe. The
quality of childhood is a critical factor in shaping the future of children. Learning
experiences are largely determined by the care and protection children to receive or
fail to receive from adults. If we have discuss as parents pass away, children become
weak and get subjected to various risks that pose significant challenges in terms of
their education. So this study deals with the role of READ Foundation in promotion
of Orphans’ education at Dist. Kotli.
