Business Mathematics
Pre-requisite Courses: Nil

Course Description: The course will stress mainly on developing basics concepts of
mathematics. It will include basic mathematical operations, factorization, solving first and
second-degree equations, solving first and second-degree inequalities, analytical geometry
(graph, linear equation – slope-intercept form), solving simultaneous equations, mathematical
functions (concept of domain and range), quadratic functions, mathematics of finance and
matrices. All topics will be discussed along with their applications. Some features of Microsoft
Excel on graph and matrices are also included in the course.

Course Objective: This is the first course in mathematics and the main objective of this course is
to improve the level of quantitative abilities possessed by students and prepare them for the
applications of mathematics in the courses like finance, economics, operations research, etc.

 Basic Arithmetic and Algebra including BODMAS, LCM, HCF.


 Factorization up to second degree.
 Word problems related to ratio, proportions, percentages and averages.
 Rectangular coordinates system.
 Distance and Midpoint Formula
 Linear Functions
o Slope and slope intercept form of line
o Sketching functions through excel
o Domain; Range; Restricted Domain and Range along with their applications.
 Applications of linear functions related to Cost, Revenue, Profit, Breakeven models,
demand, and supply and market equilibrium.
 Mathematics for Finance
o Single Payment computations
o Future value of annuity
o Present value of annuity
o Functions of Excel related to finance
 Matrices
o Definition and uses
o Matrix operations
o Determinant (2x2 only)
o Matrix inverse (2x2 only)
o Matrix operations, determinant and inverse on MS Excel
 Quadratic function and its applications.
 System of equations and its solution
o Manual solution (2x2 only)
o Interpret the point of intersections.
o Solving system of equation (higher dimensions) on MS Excel.
