Social media are web-based services that gives individual the opportunity to create either a public or
semi-public profile within a bounded system, add a list of others to with they share a connection and
view and transvers their list of connections and those made by others within the system. Therefore, this
study was carried out with the aim of examining the impact of use of social media on students’ academic
performance in Agusan National High School. Ten Research questions and five Research hypotheses
guided the study. To achieve this, the descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study
focused on Agusan National High School Senior High Students. The simple random sampling
technique was used to select a sample of 50 students. For this research, the data will be collected
using survey questionnaire and interview. Research findings showed that a great number of students
in Agusan National High School, are addicted to social media. This research also presents a
conceptual framework for analyzing the effects of social media to student’s academic perfromanes in
school. To this end, the researcher recommended that social media should be used for educational
purposes as well; Social Networking Sites should be expanded and new pages should be created to
enhance academic activities and avoid setbacks in the students’ academic performance; and
Students should be monitored by teachers and parents on how they use these sites This is to create
a balance between social media and academic activities of students to avoid setbacks in the
academic performance of the students.
INTRODUCTION

Through the years, social media has been proven to have ann effect on the student’s academic
performance. The main use of social media is to socialize, share, post images and etc. But in some cases,
social media is being abused and is consuming the time for academic activities. (Asur and Huberman,
2012)

Due to discovering new ideas and trends, social media nis continuing to improve user experience. Being
active in socia media does not mean just opening profile pages on different types of social networking
sites., it is a tool in communicating with friends, researching for assignments, projects, report and playing
online games. Social medi can be a platform. The use of social networking sites is it influences the high
school students academic performance. All this requires time management, effort and knowledge to
properly use and manage your activities on the internet. (Mayfield, 2010)

As we know, nothing interesting is ever completely one-sided, so it is for social media as it comes with
both positive and negative effects. There is a correlation between social media usage and academic
performance of students in universities. There have been various views and opinions which recognize
four major advantages of social media use in higher education. These include; enhancing relationship,
improving learning motivation, offering personalized course material, and developing collaborative
abilities (Wheeler, Yeomans and Wheeler,2008; Rifkin, Longnecker, Leach and Ortia,2009). Also, Liccardi
et al (2007), argued that students are socially connected with one another and therefore share their
daily learning experiences and do conversation on various topics through social media whereas
Kuppuswamy and Shankar (2010), reviewed that social network websites grab students’ attention and
then diverts it towards noneducational and inappropriate actions including useless chatting.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design
This study is a descriptive type of research. The researchers will use this research design to define and
obtain infromation pn the effets of using social media on the student’s academic performance.
Questionnaires and interview will be the key instruments for collecting data. The collected data will be
recorded and analyzed to determine the effects of using social media on the Senior High School
student’s academic perforance in Agusan National High School.

Respondanets and Sampling Procedure

The method that will be used in this study is the random sampling method so that everyone will have an
equal and independent chance of being selected. Fifty (50) respondents will be randomly selected by the
researcher that wil present the population as a whole.

Research Instrumetation

A survey questionnaire and interview will be used to gather information from the respondents, the
survey questionnaire is a close ended one where by respondents were only allowed to choose their
answer from the boxes so that it will be easy for respondents to think and lesser time to answer the
questions.

Statistical Techniques

The researcher will use Descriptive and Correlational.

Result and Discussion

Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-based input,
interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. The use of social media in education provides students
with the ability to get more useful information, to connect with learning groups and other educational
systems that make education convenient. Social network tools afford students and institutions with
multiple opportunities to improve learning method . In school, the use of online platforms such as
school website will give students the right access to quality information about the school environment,
departments, faculties, rules, and regulations. It has been observed that social media has a wider and
faster means of circulating information not only to the students of an institution but also to the
generality of the public. To address the issue on why students are using social media, the researchers
floated questionnaires to the respondents. In table 1 shows that 66% of the respondants are strongly
agree about being addicted to online social networks. In table 2 shows that 64% are strongly disagree
about being distracted to their studies in Online social networks. In table 3 shows that 42% of the
respondents are strongly agree about speding their time online than reading. In table 4 shows that 48%
of the respondents are Strongly agree about online social network are no help of the improvement of
grades. In table 5 shows that 52% of the respondents are strongly agree about online social network
affects performance negatively. In table 6 shows that 88% of the respondents are strongly agree about
having a poor performance because of spening online. In table 7 shows that 78% of the respondents are
stronly agree about using social media according to gender. In table 8 shows that 56% are strongly agree

Conclusion
It is without doubt that social media is and will remain an important tool in human life as far
communication is concerned. Today mankind is harvesting tremendously from its existence not only in
mere communication point of view but also in most scholarly activities. Different forms of education
including distance education has been widely patronized and facilitated to some degree through these
social media networks. Acquiring information both locally and internationally from friends, lectures or
experts is no longer a struggle as compared to the olden days and the internet is the ultimate master
behind this success. “Social media is a useful servant but a dangerous master” and can also be
“described as a two edge sword” and as such, users especially students must be alert about its dangers
and be prudent in its utilization. The nature of social media as a useful servant but a dangerous master”
and a two edge sword has been revealed in the findings of the study that, despite the benefits that
students can harness from social media networks such as sharing of information, building relationship,
partaking in group discussions from near and far among others, there is to some extent addiction and
distraction of attention caused by the use of social media which could have serious consequences on the
academic life of students.
