For plastics in building and construction, cool pigments are commonly used in rigid PVC profiles and capstocks in order
to avoid heat distortion of assembled windows and sidings, and, consequently, extend their product lifetime.
Avoid heat distortion of PVC profiles: Polymers such as rigid PVC

are temperature sensitive materials: if they get too hot, windows,
doors or siding profiles will tend to distort, warp and twist out of shape,
especially when colored. If not carefully selected when formulating the
color, pigments often worsen the tendency for a profile to warp and
lead to energy lost. NIR-reflective pigments by BASF enable colors
that dramatically reduce, and, most often, eliminate the risk for parts to
warp or twist and improve living comfortability.
Increased lifetime of profiles for sidings: Under aging, polymers

like rigid PVC, Polyolefin and many others are prone to degrade and
with time will exhibit phenomena like chalking, color fading and,
ultimately, loss of mechanical properties even when properly
stabilized. Usually, the higher the surface temperature, the higher the
aging impact. NIR-reflective pigments by BASF enable colors that
significantly reduce the surface temperature and consequently extend
product lifetime.
Cool surface temperature of playground equipment

and synthetic surfaces: Sunlight and outdoor activities greatly benefit
children's health. However, the hot surface of playground equipment
and the floor, e.g. artificial turf, can easily scald a child's skin and lead to
injury. Our NIR reflecting pigments help to create colors that will reduce
the equipment surface temperature, allowing kids to exclusively focus
on having more fun while being safe!
