Narrative Report:
Classroom observations have often been employed in the past with no purpose other than to
tell the teachers of his weak points and how to remedy them. In the modern trend, as what
Mrs. Girlita O. Villanueva emphasized the purpose of the classroom visit is determined more
by the teacher himself through the use of Classroom Observation Tool (COT).
The purpose is no longer restricted to instruction, correcting, and rating the teacher. The
observation result becomes a kind of group - study carried on by the department head and
the teachers in forum like Learning Action Cell (LAC) in which the observer points out those
problems which are of concern to the group guided by the classroom observation tool.
Classroom observation is still considered as an essential part of supervisory processes.
The observer should steadfastly prevent other matters from interfering with classroom
observation, for it is where the teacher guides the child’s total growth and development.
It is further emphasized that Classroom Observation Tool (COT) must be based on the concept
that the observation is the improvement of teaching – learning situation through the
cooperative efforts of the teacher and the supervisor(head) rather than the improvement of
the teacher’s teaching technique through the efforts of the head.
Mrs. Girlita O. Villanueva pointed out that classroom observation tool (COT) is designed to
bring about the accomplishment of the educational and supervisory activities in the Key
Results Areas (KRAs).
The Classroom Observation Tool (COT) serve as reference in studying, and improving and
evaluating the teaching – learning situation for further growth and development.
It must be remembered, however, that the primary act of the observer is to stimulate, direct,
guide, and encourage the teacher in carrying out his own self – improvement plan. Although
the indicators found in the classroom observation tool may serve as a basis for raising the
efficiency of the teacher. The observer should not expect the teacher to meet rigidly all the
indicators he had given in the COT, the observer must observed very closely on the indicators
being portrayed in the teaching – learning process.
Mrs. Girlita O. Villanueva, clarifies that all other indicators found in the classroom
observation tool which were not met during the observation are expected to be
accomplished on the next classroom observations.
