INTRODUCTION
Traffic flow is important to be used in the planning, design and operation of highway
systems. Traffic flow can be defined as total number of vehicles passing one point along
a road defined time in vehicle per hour unit.
OBJECTIVE
1) To estimate the traffic volume at an intersection. The data can be used to design
traffic signal at the intersection
2) To identify the capacity of the road or junction and determine whether they are at the
appropriate level
3) To identify the performance level (LOS) of road or junction.

PROCEDURE
1) The proper location has been selected T-junction in front Politeknik Port Dickson
and we do the observation at the site .Time studied must be the peak hour.
Manually Method:
1) The manual method is one of the easiest ways to measure the volumes of the road.
It is done by counting the vehicles at selected section of a road.
2) All census data are carried out manually and recorded minute basis in “Appendix
A” form provided by Highway Planning Unit, Ministry of Works Malaysia.
3) Generally, the distribution of traffic volume is not uniform due to time and space
factor. The pattern of traffic can be classified as follows:
i) Traffic volume in monthly basis
ii) Traffic volume in yearly basis
iii) Traffic volume in weekly basis
iv) Traffic volume in daily basis
v) Traffic volume in hourly basis
vi) Traffic volume in minute basis
2
4) The duration of the traffic count is carried out mainly by 1 hour, 1 day, 1 year.
Important terms related to traffic volume is design hourly traffic (DHT)- design
based on the hourly peak flow
5) For classified counts, the vehicles are grouped as follow: Appendix A form
provided by Highway Planning Unit, Ministry of Works Malaysia
6) Traffic composition can be divided into types and class of vehicles as per Arahan
Teknik (Jalan) 8/86.
Refer Table- Conversion Factors From Vehicle Type to Passengers Car Unit (PCU),
(Traffic Signal Design).

CONCLUSION
In this study, sensitivity analysis of input parameters of the different traffic analysis
methods were carried out. The parameters can vary, as long as it meets the standards and
requirement from the manual. Four parameters that had been analysed are critical gap,
follow-up time, proportion of heavy vehicles or motorcycles and total volume of the
vehicles. It is observed that with changes of values on any parameters, it will affect the
average time delay on the output, thus affecting the Level of Service as well. Out of the
four parameters it shown that critical factors affecting the LOS of the junction is critical
gap based on the percentage of the reduction in average control delay.
