MODULE IN ART 6

I. TOPIC: Textile Craft: Tie- Dyeing a T- Shirt

II. OBJECTIVES:
a. applies individually the intricate procedures in tie dyeing in clothes or t-shirts and compares them with
one another
b. researches on tie-dyed products of other cultural communities to compare their designs and colors
III. MATERIALS: white old cotton t-shirt, colored dyes, elastic bands (number depends on the number of rings to
be created), soap, gloves, stick, salt
IV. LEARNING PROCESS:
- Identify clothes at home with beautiful multi-colored designs.
- Find out how fabrics are designed and dyed.
- Research on the textile tradition ( tie-dyed method) in other countries.
- Research on the textile tradition in the Philippines made by the T’bolis.
- Plan the design and color of your tie- dyed shirt.
V. CONCEPT NOTES:

TEXTILE ART or FABRIC ART- uses plant, animal or synthetic fibers to create practical or decorative objects.
Our clothes are created out of fabric. One of the old ways of creating a design on a fabric is called TIE DYEING.
TIE DYEING- is tying and dyeing the cloth in different dye colors. This process results in a new fabric with
different designs after it had been dried and rinsed. The designs that would appear could be those of
butterflies, bees, fish, insects and flowers. The tie-dye process was a popular industry in China, India, Japan and
Indonesia centuries ago.

TIE –DYE PRINTING- is a way of creating beautiful multi-colored designs by tying and dyeing fabrics and soaking
this in an array of bright paint colors. Dyes can be combined to create new colors. This process adds value and
tone to the fabric or add light and dark tones in the colors depending on the number of colors used.
* In China, tie-dye printing appeared in the 3rd to 4th century. The tie-dye process in China is very intricate.
* BANDHANI is a type of tie-dye in India. This popular design is the pattern of waves. The main colors are bright
yellow, red, green and pink. Maroon is also an all-time favorite.
* SHIBORI is a tie-dyeing technique in Japan. There are many ways one can bind, stitch, fold, twist or compress
cloth for shibori. The technique used in shibori depends not only on the desired pattern. It depends upon the
characteristics of the cloth being dyed.
* In Indonesia, the process of resist-dyeing is binding individual areas of cloth. This is done to shield the cloth
from the dye. This process is known as PELANGI ( plangi ) meaning rainbow, or TRITIK meaning drips of water.
* In the Philippines, our T’NALAK fabric is tie-dyed weaved and created into bags, shoes, pillows, jackets, hats
and others.T’BOLI women of South Cotabato also make tie-dye weave fabric.

COLOR- is the visual perceptual property corresponding in humans to the categories called red, blue, yellow.
DYE- is a coloring material or matter that combined to create new colors, or a liquid containing coloring matter
for imparting a particular hue on cloth, paper and other materials.
VALUE-is defined as the relative lightness or darkness of a color.
TONE- in an artistic context refers to the light and dark values used to render a realistic object or to create an
abstract composition.

VI. PERFORMANCE TASK: Create your own tie dye design using one or two colors in an old white t-shirt. Follow
the procedure below. ( You may ask help or assistance from your parents or guardians.)
PROCEDURE:
1. Get a t- shirt ( ideally white cotton). Set- up at a place with a water supply nearby (sink area).
2. Rinse the t-shirt in water and soap then wring.
3. Pinch about 1 inch of the fabric at the center. Tie tightly with an elastic band.
4. Continue tying more elastic bands below each other, spacing about one inch apart. Tie as many as you like.
This will create circle patterns on the fabric.
5. Soak the fabric using a stick in the dye (and salt) and boiling water mixture as instructed on pack.
6. Rinse well in clean water. The water from the squeezed fabric should run clear after. Wring the fabric.
7. Hang outside to dry.

NOTE: Submit the finished output/project with a two-minute video as an evidence when we resume classes.
Also, make a reflection of 6-8 sentences of your feelings and experiences about the activity. Write it in your ART
notebook.
Answer the questions:
1. Is the motif on cloth clear? If the motif is blurred, is it because of poor dye or loose tying?
2. Are the motifs arranged artistically on cloth? Do they appear in various interesting sizes and shapes?
