Analysis of The Issues that Consider by a Manager in Making Promotion Decision

There are several issues that faced by managers in making promotion decision in an
organizational or companies. Every employee absolutely wants to get job promotion in their careers, to
get more salary and every company and organizational have their own rules to give job promotion to their
employee. Knowledge, skill, competencies, good attitude or behavior are aspect that most company use as
their requirement to give job promotion to their employees. Promotion is given to employee with higher
responsibilities, higher accountability and higher financial as a benefit. Promotion given to employee as a
reward of employees capabilities and performances. But sometimes, there are factors that consider by a
manager in decision making of promotion.
Sex and Gender issues is one of issues in making promotion decision by managers. In some
company, sometimes people's underestimates women in workplace. Women is identic with low power to
do a job. This issues are often to do in making promotion decision by manager. Women are known for
their “big mouth”, they could not keep secrets or could not stop to give excuses or problems in advising
or taking advice. Women are doubt to work with their swing of moods or emotions.
Age issues. Sometimes manager underestimates the ability, skills, and competencies of young
people. Young people seen as amateur experience in workplace, but young people have a spirit and more
energy than old people. Manager mostly will not give promotion for junior 2-3 years work experience
employees. Sometimes manager think again to give promotion to young people or postpone to give the
job promotion to young people. For the senior worker or employee, age problem means the long term
time of working. By getting older, health problem could occur.
Nepotism issues. When the employee is in the same family or have close relationship with the
manager or leader of the company sometimes they will get priorities in job promotion. It will be not fair
for employees that have more competencies or qualified with the job offering position. Merit should be
based on performance in the present post and potential (ability to perform/work) in the promoted post and
not based on the recommendations of the supervisor, because sometimes nepotism issues happen in
affecting promotion decision making.
Religion issues is very sensitive sometimes, many managers will not give promotion because
different religion or believe with their leader to employees in an organizational or company. Many people
changes their believe in order to get promotion because religion issues that is sensitive issues to get
promotion in workplace. It is depends on majority religion in that area. Like in Indonesia, muslim is the
main religion so for some company they wants to promote employee with the same religion.
Cultures issues. Sometimes culture's affect on employees performances and behavior, the way
they think and do that give impact on their job performances in workplace. Manager in an organizational
or company looking from the cultures, where the employee come from to give promotion based on
performances assessment.
Gratification issues. Sometimes, when employee wants to get job promotion, there is issues that
they paid money to be in the position, they give gratification to influence the promotion decision making
by the manager. Trading job position will give negative to the company because of the person that give
gratification usually are have not enough of competencies, skills and also have bad attitude that will
affecting on company operational performances.
Performance issues. Doing a good job is not good enough for employee to get an promotion.
Managers look for employees who display the ability, work ethic, and initiative to succeed at the next
level. The more likely staff or employee member is the staff that present new idea and implements
successful new initiatives, the volunteer to take on projects that no one else wants to tackle, the staff
member that has technical competency but also has the potential to lead and train others to achieve
success.
Educational background issues. In many company, their are looking for employee with excellent
educational background with graduated in foreign country or top universities to get promotion. In some
company, their priority to promote employees that minimal have master degree.
Attitude or behaviour in workplace issues. Nobody with right mind would knowingly act like a
moron in front of a chief officer. Good attitude and behaviour in workplace important thing beside
competencies and skill that affecting manager in promotion decision making.
Managers look for people who are easy to get along and enthusiasm about any project given to
them. Employee with good attitude will positive impact to the company.
Political affiliation issues. Sometimes manager will not give promotion to employee that have
different affiliation with the leader of organizational or company. When the employee complain too much
or not in the same political affiliation with the company, manager will not give promotion to them.
Employees who have trouble getting along with others also may be overlooked if the new
position will involve supervising other employee.
Changing owner issues. When the owner or leader in an organizational or company are changing
it will affect on the promotion decision making by the manager, because it is possible the manager person
also changes. When the manager changes it means the new manager have not data about the employee
performances which is the basic assessment to give promotion. The promotion will be not objectives.
Promoting wrong person at the wrong time can cause lasting damage. Done thoughtfully,
promoting is one of the best ways to grow a company talent and gain company profit.
So, that are some issues that consider by manager in making promotion decision. My suggestion
that every employee must improve their job performances because it will better when we have high
performance and competencies to get job promotion then we have poor competencies and wants get
promotion, because there is competition in workplace to get promotion in higher level of job position in
an organizational or company. For the manager, my suggestion is to be fair in making promotion
decision. All factor that affect the promotion decision making depends of what the company and wants
from their employee and affect the organizational or company operation in order to gain company profit
as the result.
