BAHALA NA

1. Meaning
Bahala na is a filipino socio-culture wherein Filipinos usually says “Bahala na”
when they didn’t know what to do next or what will happen next. Bahala na is derivative
of the word Bathala, this means that Filipinos humbly submit everything to God.
2. Good side (morally acceptable) in business setting
The good side of Bahala na in the business setting is that having this kind of
value will help you to become stronger in a way that you are telling yourselves that you
are ready to deal with hard situations. Like in the business saying bahala na in a
situation means that you believe in yourself that you can face all the problems you might
encounter.
3. Bad side (Morally unacceptable) in business setting
The bad side of Bahala na in the business setting is that you are no longer
preparing for things/ problems you might encounter. In the business you shouldn’t be
lazy in a way that you are just sitting pretty and thinking what happens, will happen. For
example is that you are the business owner, you encounter financial crisis but instead of
doing actions you intended to say bahala na. This action will never help you solve your
problems.
4. How does it affect the businesses in our country?
Bahala na affects the businesses in the country both positively and negatively.
As what I give as an example in the business industry. Business owners need to be
wise and strategic in everything they do for their business. Having this kind of value
“Bahala na” is not a good thing for them. Instead of saying bahala na, business owner
should make an action immediately. They should be wise thinking what might happen
next.

REFLECTION ( BAHALA NA)

This value “Bahala Na” taught me that in life, if you want to be successful you
need to make an action. I also believe that you create your own success in life. It is not
all about depending on someone, if you want to achieve something in life, go work hard
for it. I remember when I was a kid I always says “bahala na” and with that kind of
attitude, at the end I always disappoint myself, telling myself that what if I really did my
best instead of saying “bahala na”. Sometimes in life we intend to just give up
immediately, not finding what solution might help us. With that I realized that your
decisions in life really matters. It’s not bad to offer everything to God, but God wants us
to learn that we should work hard for something that we want. We shouldn’t leave or
depend everything to Him.

UTANG NA LOOB

1. Meaning
Filipino value system is defined by the way of people live their life as an influence
of one's culture. It is innate that we have belief that when other good something to you,
you have a big gratitude to that certain person. One of that Filipino Value is “Utang na
loob” it is a Filipino cultural trait which, when translated literally, means "a debt of one's
inner self.” It is also often translated as a "debt of gratitude." The essence of utang na
loob is an obligation to appropriately repay a person who has done one a favor.
2. Good side (morally acceptable) in business setting
As an employee of a company, doing your job without your boss or someone
who sees it, your moral obligation is to commit in your job because it allows an
organization to meet its goals and stick to its vision. But without a bunch of motivated
and committed employees, an organization can be in a risky position because
commitment at work leads to better productivity. Second, the loyalty with your company.
Loyal employees contribute extensively to the productivity the business. It can able to
create the value required to put your business on the path to success. This is not an
order to follow, but it’s the moral obligation to have or give with your company because
doing your job with passion can lead you to a better success. It must be applied
adequately and properly to show gratitude, it’s the best way to contribute with your
company.
3. Bad side (Morally unacceptable) in business setting
One of the example is, when my manager help me through a rough patch and
save me from terrible situation, I will be grateful and value that forever in my life. That’s
why my manager take that as an advantage to let me follow all of his command even if
it’s not part of my job to do that since he know that I have something to repay for him.
Utang na loob should never be a reason for us to ignore the red flags around us just
because they help us through our horrific time, but it doesn’t mean they’re always right
and couldn’t make any mistakes.
4. How does it affect the businesses in our country?
Utang na Loob affect the businesses in the country, example I have a factory of
woods and my company experience a financial problem or bankruptcy, so I go to other
companies to save my factory and then they lend me some money to save my
business. Since they know that I have something to repay for them because they lend
me some brunch of money, they asking for 10% discount to buy some woods in my
factory. So as a owner of factory, I have a utang na loob to them that’s why I will let
them buy my woods with 10% discount. Utang na Loob can be good or bad in any
businesses, if you know their being abusive because they have the power to do it. Don’t
let them step on your line to do such thing. But if you’re looking to strengthen the bonds
of your organization, then show gratitude to everyone involved including employees,
prospects, customers, suppliers, and vendors. Not only will it improve your well being,
your employees will feel valued and appreciated. So, they will be faithful and follow all
the order in your company that’s why utang na loob or gratitude have a big impact in
any businesses.

REFLECTION (UTANG NA LOOB)

Utang na Loob or gratitude taught me how to be thankful and grateful with my

family. Beyond circumstances they faced everyday in their job and how hard it is to
raise a child, my parents don’t even think to give up and feed me every day, and still
manage to give me additional allowances for being a good daughter with them. But as I
grow older, my friends keep telling me that having gratitude is not okay because people
will take that as an advantage since you have something to repay for them so I believe
in that. Every day in my life back then, if someone helped me, I always ask them if I can
do something to repay them. But they insist. Then I realized, doing good deeds to
others is not a favor, helping others should be done with all of your heart. I realized that
my parents didn’t ask for something as they raised me even if they encountered
hardships. The only thing that I can repay them is to study and make them proud
without them asking for it.

Having gratitude is okay as long as you wouldn’t do such things that will
disappoint others. And now, I’m doing everything to remove their tardiness by being a
good daughter, friend and student. Same with my second parent which is the teachers,
the only thing that I can repay them without asking it is to respect and obey them for
giving life lessons and all the knowledge they have for us to grow. Thank you to my
parents, good friends and teachers who taught me to be thankful that having a gratitude
is okay as long as you don’t use this for bad intentions.

AMOR PROPIO

1. Meaning
Amor Propio came from Spanish word which means self-love, sense of self-
esteem or self-respect that sometimes prevents a person from swallowing his own
pride. In western terms it can loosely related to the cultivation and maintenance of ego.
In Tagalog, “sobrang pagmamahal sa sarili, na nauuwi sa pagiging arogante at abusado
ng isang tao.” Amor propio includes sensitivity to personal insult, slight offensive or
insulting gesture wouldn’t trigger a sense of “amor propio”. Basically, Amor propio
means failing to provide proper hospitality, passionlessly accepting criticism, admitting
wrong, and the likes. Studies shows that this said value is evident in some of the
Filipinos.
2. Good side (morally acceptable) in business setting
Even though this Filipino trait isn’t that good as it sounds, it still has some good
side. We can corelate this “amor porpio” to love of honor which means guarding one’s
dignity or having self-control. Self-esteem helps one to be careful about one's actions
and speech. In business field it is important to guard your own dignity because your
image as the owner does reflect on the image of your business. It also brings self-
discipline, Self-discipline is a useful inner power, which enables one to hang on and not
give up, despite failure and setbacks. It grants its possessor self-command, and the
power to resist temptations and distractions that tend to stand in the way of attaining
aims and goals. A person who have this trait will strive to succeed in learning,
competition, and any other work, pouring out time to thrive because he/she wants the
long-term respect of his/her colleagues. Also, this person will also avoid sinning
because of this amor porpio.
3. Bad side (Morally unacceptable) in business setting
Despite the good side of Amor Porpio, it also have bad side. Amor porpio can
cause extreme love for oneself that leads to being arrogant and abusive, which is not a
good characteristic to have especially if handling a business. Amor porpio may result to
excessive pride in one’s intellect, wealth, social position or position in general which
causes too much pride, disregarding the needs of others and extremely seeking praise
from other people. Worst is that some people causes a mess or fight between
colleagues because some allegedly not respect their reputation. There are also abusers
who use their power to harass others because they are so blind to their “authority”

4. How does it affect the businesses in our country?

This value can be a hindrance to the success of a business. Having this value
means you have a tension wire that grids you up and protect you from criticism.
Accepting criticism is important in business because you take those things as a guide to
make your business much better and if you have so much grid in yourself you will not be
able to accept this criticisms. This value can also result in displaying superficial behavior
or so-called “pakitang tao”. In business you can’t trick everyone, you have to be
naturally good, accepting and credible for others to accept you and your business. If
anyone wants to have his/her own business, having this value isn’t the great idea.
Imagine, your colleagues tell you something that will make your business even better,
but instead of taking it as an advice you take it as an insult because you feel like they
step on your pride so you end up messing up with your colleagues and that is very
unethical.

REFLECTION (AMOR PROPIO)

Amor propio has a lot of good sides and bad sides. However, despite of these
sides. We need to balance our self-love and love towards others, this way we cannot
hurt other people also ourselves as well. Amor propio has been circulating around the
business industry and lot of people abuse this trait, abusing this trait will lead to
selfishness.
My reflection of amor propio is Filipinos have been described as friendly,
outgoing, sensitive, easily offended, nosy, garrulous, direct, hospitable, feisty,
irreverent, good natured, clever, witty, gregarious, happy, generous, easy to laugh,
gracious, easy to befriend, casual, fun loving, sensitive and hospitable. Personal and
family honor are stressed, as well as dignity and pride. Education is highly valued and
families make great sacrifices to educate their children. Hiya is instilled in Filipinos at an
early age. To be shamed is the greatest form of disgrace. Filipino culture developed
over centuries in tandem with and in response to Western culture introduced by the
Spanish and later Americans.

SUKI SYSTEM

1. Meaning
Suki is a Filipino term which means loyal customers. And also "suki" is a distinct
Filipino value system which rooted primarily in personal alliance systems based on
commercial relationships. In business through a suki relastionship usually takes time
and many business transactions to be solidified, suggesting a suki like relationship and
backing it up with concessions could be used as a measure to build trust. And suki
relationships (market- exchange partnership) may develop between two people who
agree to become regular costumer and supplier. In the marketplace, Filipinos will
regularly buy from certain specific suppliers who will give them in return, reduced prices,
good quality and often credit.
2. Good side (morally acceptable) in business setting
The good side of Suki system in the business setting is their suppliers will give
them a reduced prices and good quality and when a buyer and a vendor enter a suki
arrangement, they become each other's suki and will refer to each other as suki. More
vividly this means that additional value is created for the vendor, by virtue of the suki
arrangement, because of guaranteed sales; which are especially important to vendors
of perishable goods. Furthermore the vendor can expect free word of mouth advertising
by the suki. The buyer can also expect to spend less time at the market because of
diminished need to look for the best quality product at the most competitive prices and
can also expect special and personal treatment from the suki.
3. Bad side (Morally unacceptable) in business setting
The bad side of Suki system in the business setting a suki rrelationship can
mean not always getting the very best deal possible, every single time. Both buyers and
sellers will occasionally take a small loss in order to keep the relationship going, there
are many different ways of conducting negotiations. There are techniques and concepts
unique to 5. In other words, repeat business has a higher expected utility than the
expected value of the immediate gain and expected value of the absolute value of a
potential loss, combined. for the vendor might have to sell products at wholesale rates
for the customers may occasionally have tp buy products slightly above average market
price
. 4. How does it affect the business in our country
Suki system affects the business in the country, example I have a business it will
have a advantage and disadvantages being a suki because the advantage of having a
suki customers they will always buy your goods, they will not buy in others and also they
will have a good quality products at the most competitive prices and if your a suki they
will give expect special and personal treatment and they will decrease the prices and
the disadvantages of a suki system if everytime they want a discount because they are
always buying your products sometimes you will get bankrupt in your business.
REFLECTION (SUKI SYSTEM)

Suki System taught me, we Filipinos have a lot of values when it comes to
business. And one of the values that I usually hear to adults is the "suki system". This
suki system is one of the business owners need, because you know that there is
someone that will keep coming back to ypur store maybe every week or every other day
to buy your products. When a buyer and a vendor enter a suki arrangement, they
become each other's suki. The purchaser can also expect to spend less time on the
market due to reduced need to search for the best quality commodity at the most
affordable prices and can also expect unique and personal care from suki.

To sum it up, there are many different ways of conducting negotiations. There
are many different ways of conducting negotiations. There are techniques and concepts
unique to those ways. And for me if you are vendor or a business owner you should
taking care of those purchaser because they are the one who help your business grows.

PADRINO SYSTEM

1. Meaning
Is a system in Filipino politics that started many years ago. It means that one
can gain favor in politics through the help of a “padrino” or family friend. This helps
those who wants to be in the politics but cannot reach the requirements needed. This
results too many controversies because it can lead to corruption.

2. Good side
It is good in terms of when you wants to be promoted in the business and your
family knows a friend that can help you, you’ll be able to get what you want easily. That
is only if your intentions are good and won’t cause harm or disturbance to other people
in the business.

3. Bad side
It is not good because people can use this opportunity to get what they want easily
that was cause by greed. This will be bad for the business since everyone will be
affected including the employees. The business might even suffer loss of profit because
of someone’s greed and irresponsibility. This is because the one in that high position
just reach there through the help of someone powerful even though he/she isn’t
qualified to do the job.

4. How does it affects the businesses in the country?

It will greatly affects every business because the ones that will lead those
businesses might not be qualified or truly rightful in that place. The business might
suffer loss of profits due to misleading and lack of right patronage. Also, other people
who deserves those positions can’t do anything even though they’re the ones that the
business need.

REFLECTION (PADRINO SYSTEM)

Padrino system taught me that sometimes our world is really unfair. It is because
some people get what they want easily without the need to work hard for it. For me everyone
is equal and each should do their best and prove that they're worth the thing or position they
have. In business you should still work hard and do your best because no matter if other
people get ahead of you just because of someone else's help, you know that you really
deserve better than those who are unfair.

FILIAL PIETY

1. Meaning
Filial piety means that the same devotion and selfishness in serving one's family
should also be used when serving one's country. Thus, Filial Piety is an important value
when it comes to treating one's immediate family, elders and superiors in general, and
the state at large. In more general terms, filial piety means to be a good to one's
parents; to take care of one's parents; to engage in good conduct not just towards
parents but also outside the home so as to bring a good name to one's parents and
ancestors.
2. Good Side (Morally Acceptable) in business setting
Filial piety is an advantage for the Asian American culture because commitment
and loyalty are qualities that help families survive. Individuals that are able to find
strength and trust within their families are often resilient in adverse circumstances.
When parents instill in their children the aspects of filial piety, they are showing them to
be respectful while giving them opportunities to succeed. Then, once the children reach
adulthood, they will return the favor to their parents by taking care of them as they age.
Cultures that practice filial piety often demonstrate cultural continuity because of the
strong cycle of concern for the well being of family members. Family solidarity is a
source of strength for Asian American families.
3. Bad Side (Morally Unacceptable) in business setting
Some disadvantages of filial piety have to do with the generational conflicts
associated with the differences in attitudes and values between older and younger
generations. Culture and society is always changing and older generations often
express more support for the traditional values than do younger family members. It is a
challenge to foster traditional Asian values within a broader U.S. society that has child
rearing practices inconsistent with filial piety.
4. How does it affect the businesses in our country?
Filial piety can be fruitfully applied to the ethics of business management. One of
the primary goals of business ethics is to obtain a richer understanding of the ways in
which the workplace environment, in the inclusive sense of involving both physical and
social aspects, can have a tremendous impact on the moral behaviors of workers. A
deeper appreciation of this fact can lead to the advancement of positive motivation for
creating a good, peaceful sound environment that ultimately discourages corruption.

REFLECTION (FILIAL PIETY)

Filial Piety or respect to the elders or parents, this value taught me how to be
obedience and have respect with the elders or parents. This is a common value in East
Asian societies and among Asians Americans that sets an expectation for children to
respect and care for aging parents. Within social work, filial piety is contested as being a
positive or negative influence on families and social welfare policy. Obey your parents
because they know what's good to you, but in this generation, few of teens or children
not obey their parents because they have own rules. So Im lucky to have a parents that
understand my attitude because even if I'm not good child to them but still they good to
me, that's why I always respect them and obey them.
