TASKS OF 6 AB DIV
3. 6 AB Div under comd of 1 Corps was given the important role of covering the
left flank of 21 Army Gp. This required:
a. Capture of the brs over the CAEN Canal and River ORNE. To enable
the subsequent threat towards CAEN to be developed these brs were needed
intact on D Day.
b. Destruction of the MERVILLE Bty 156775. Since this bty could not
for certain be neutralized by hy bombing, it had to be seized and silenced
before- the asslt craft came within rage.
(1) Secure the area between the River ORNE and River DIVES,north
of rd TROARN 1667-SANNERVILLE 1368-COLOMBELLES 0770.
(2) Delay any en res attempting to mov towards the div area from
the east.

PROBABLEEN REACTION
1~. Having ascertained the limits of the landing and failed in initial counter
attack, the obvious line on which the en would hold the invading forces would be
the high ground to the east of the flooded valley of the River DIVES.
2. Although it would weaken the estuary defs of the River SEINE it was likely,
once the threat had clearly declared itself west of the River ORNEand there was
no sign of an attack east of the River DIVES or on the River SEINE estuary, that
part of 711 Inf Div would move across to take up posns along the high ground east
of the River DIVES. At first one complete regt might mov there and if the en
appreciated no further threat to the east the whole div might be moved.
3. The action of 716 Inf Div was expected to be completely disrupted by the
landings.

6 AB DIV PLAN

3. 19-30 Jun. The Capture of CHERBOURG and the Establishment of a Bridgehead
over River ODON.
c. By 30 Jun little progress was made but five more panzer divisions -
2 Pz, 1 SS, 2 SS, 9 SS and 10 SS - joined those already involved. 2 Army
was ordered to continue operations to capture CAEN, and to maintain maximum
pressure in order to keep the enemy forces engaged.
4. 1-9 Jul. Preliminary Operations for the Break-out from the Lodgement Area.
a. This period was mainly taken up with operations against CAEN, the
northern part of which fell on 9 Jul. This greatly simplified problems
on the east fl,ank as we had now eliminated the enemy salient west of the
River ORNE and were well placed to continue operations for extending our
bridgehead to the east of it.
b. On 12/13 Jul 2 Army regrouped; 12 Corps took over from 8 Corps while
2 CA Corps became operational and took up positions between 12 Corps and
1. Corps.
