6 AB DIV - ROLE IN OP OVERLORD

21. ARMY GP OUTLINE PLAN

1. To asslt simul~taneously beaches on the NORMANDYcoast between the CARETAN

estuary and the River ORNE in order to seize a lodgement area.

2. Once firmly estb, Gen MONTGOMERY planned to develop a threat of a breakout

on the eastern flank in the CAEN area. His intention was to draw and then contain
the en armd res ori this flank, using the BR a~nd CA Armies. Having achieved this,
the US Armies under Gen BRADLEY here to launch the main breakout thrust southwards
down the LOIRE, thence eastwards while the front pivoted around CAEN.

TASKS OF 6 AB DIV

3. 6 AB Div under comd of 1 Corps was given the important role of covering the
left flank of 21 Army Gp. This required:

a. Capture of the brs over the CAEN Canal and River ORNE. To enable
the subsequent threat towards CAEN to be developed these brs were needed
intact on D Day.

b. Destruction of the MERVILLE Bty 156775. Since this bty could not
for certain be neutralized by hy bombing, it had to be seized and silenced
before- the asslt craft came within rage.

c. Destruction of brs over the River DIVES at VARAVILLE, ROBEHOMME,BURES

and TROARN. In order to delay en rfts coming from the east into the
brhead. These brs were to be blown.

d. Seconda~ry Tasks. Without prejudice of the above tasks and as soon as

resources permitted the div was to develop ops east of the River ORNE in
order to:

(1) Secure the area between the River ORNE and River DIVES,north
of rd TROARN 1667-SANNERVILLE 1368-COLOMBELLES 0770.

(2) Delay any en res attempting to mov towards the div area from
the east.

PROBABLEEN REACTION

1~. Having ascertained the limits of the landing and failed in initial counter
attack, the obvious line on which the en would hold the invading forces would be
the high ground to the east of the flooded valley of the River DIVES.

2. Although it would weaken the estuary defs of the River SEINE it was likely,
once the threat had clearly declared itself west of the River ORNEand there was
no sign of an attack east of the River DIVES or on the River SEINE estuary, that
part of 711 Inf Div would move across to take up posns along the high ground east
of the River DIVES. At first one complete regt might mov there and if the en
appreciated no further threat to the east the whole div might be moved.

3. The action of 716 Inf Div was expected to be completely disrupted by the
landings.

Note: These figures rep the sit when 6 AB Div returned to UK in Aug 44. Many of

Only 49 officers and sldrs remained classified as 'missing' at the conclusion of
hostilities.
22
3. 19-30 Jun. The Capture of CHERBOURG and the Establishment of a Bridgehead
over River ODON.

a. On 20/21 Jun the Americans closed in on the defences of CHERBOURG which

eventual.l.y fell on 1 Jul.

b. On 2 Army front bad weather delayed all operations, but a bridgehead

was established across the River ODON west of CAEN (Op EPSOM) on 29 Jun.
There were now elements of eight panzer divisions on 2 Army front between
CAUMONT and CAEN.

c. By 30 Jun little progress was made but five more panzer divisions -
2 Pz, 1 SS, 2 SS, 9 SS and 10 SS - joined those already involved. 2 Army
was ordered to continue operations to capture CAEN, and to maintain maximum
pressure in order to keep the enemy forces engaged.

4. 1-9 Jul. Preliminary Operations for the Break-out from the Lodgement Area.

a. This period was mainly taken up with operations against CAEN, the
northern part of which fell on 9 Jul. This greatly simplified problems
on the east fl,ank as we had now eliminated the enemy salient west of the
River ORNE and were well placed to continue operations for extending our
bridgehead to the east of it.

b. By 9 Jul there were 2 major projects to be undertaken on 2 Army front

- an attack east of the River ORNE to extend the existing bridgehead and
establish armour in strength east of the river, and a thrust between the
River ODON and the River ORNE to open lateral routes. The immediate
problems still remained to prevent the transfer of any enemy reserves to
the American sector.

c. It was therefore decided to begin with operations between the River

ODON and the River ORNE because they could be started more quickly than a
major attack east of the River ORNE.

5. lo-17 Jul. 2 Army Operations.

a. During this period 2 Army delivered a series of thrusts with the

primary aim of making progress southwards towards THURY HARCOURT 8529;
all operations were related to this task and to the maintenance of
pressure on as broad a front as possible.

b. On 12/13 Jul 2 Army regrouped; 12 Corps took over from 8 Corps while
2 CA Corps became operational and took up positions between 12 Corps and
1. Corps.

c. On 15 Jul., 1.2 and 30 Corps continued these major attacks southwards,

west of CAEN, but made little progress. However they did succeed in
keeping enemy armour engaged in the battle. The enemy now had only 1 and
12 SS Pz Divs out of the line.
