3.129 Each of the three steel bars shown is subjected to a torque of mag-
nitude T 5 275 N ? m. Knowing that the allowable shearing stress is 50 MPa,
determine the required dimension b for each bar.

3.130 Each of the three aluminum bars shown is to be twisted through

an angle of 28. Knowing that b 5 30 mm, tall 5 50 MPa, and G 5 27 GPa,

7.7-15 During a test of an airplane wing, the strain gage

readings from a 45° rosette (see figure) are as follows:
gage A, 520 3 1026; gage B, 360 3 1026; and gage C,
280 3 1026.
Determine the principal strains and maximum shear
strains, and show them on sketches of properly oriented

5.7-2 A tall signboard is supported by two vertical beams

consisting of thin-walled, tapered circular tubes (see figure).
For purposes of this analysis, each beam may be represented
as a cantilever AB of length L 5 8.0 m subjected to a lateral
load P 5 2.4 kN at the free end. The tubes have constant
thickness t 5 10.0 mm and average diameters dA 5 90 mm
and dB 5 270 mm at ends A and B, respectively.
Because the thickness is small compared to the diame-
ters, the moment of inertia at any cross section may be
obtained from the formula I 5 pd 3t/8 (see Case 22,
Appendix D), and therefore the section modulus may be
obtained from the formula S 5 pd 2t/4.
At what distance x from the free end does the maximum
bending stress occur? What is the magnitude smax of the
maximum bending stress? What is the ratio of the maximum
stress to the largest stress sB at the support?
