Experience At Navjyoti India Foundation

This was my first internship which was provided to me by my college’s

training and placement cell. Just a basic form had to be filled and a cover letter
was to be send. I think my form got selected because of good writing skills and
command over my English language as some subjective questions were asked in
the form. In cases where there are no interview and only form has to be filled
for the selection process one must fill form with great caution as it is your form
which speaks on your behalf. Plus in my school days I used to help NGO’s in
raising funds. This past experience gave me a little advantage in my selection
process.

I started my internship in Navjyoti from 22 nd November with a determination to

learn something new and know the working system of an NGO. The first day
itself gave me an opportunity to learn a lot. My supervisor Prem Soni Ma’am
told when and how this organisation came into existence, its aim and execution
of efforts to accomplish the task.

We visited mediation centre which is approved by district court. The director of

the mediation centre brief us about what is mediation centre is. Its working
system and its benefits for the society .With passage of time I learned the basic
things how to fill up forms, prepare a case file, , analyse client’s problem. I got
a chance to witness the counselling sessions done by Prem Soni Ma’am who
showed that a problem can be solved just by discussing the issue with each
other or taking help of counsellor rather going to court for small issues. Various
kinds of cases were dealt here in NGO but most of the cases were of domestic
violence, marital maladjustment, dowry harassment, property disputes,
neighbourhood disputes, pre-marital relationships etc.

In a pair of two the task of mobilisation was given to us where we used to visit
in the vicinity of Jahangirpuri, informing about the courses available in our
NGO which could improve their skills as well as make them eligible for a job.
Those courses include such as retail management, English speaking, stitching
and tailoring, computer operating etc. This activity helped me in gaining
confidence and help me learn how to connect with different people, how to
communicate with them, what are the traits which a lawyer must have.
We got a golden opportunity to meet Advocate Navin Prakash and his wife
Advocate Sucharita Ghosh who are legal experts in FCC. We attended a legal
session with them. They came to legally guide a client and to help her to file a
case in court. They even gave us a chance to visit Tis hazari district court in
Delhi.

The executive director of Navjyoti gave us a team task of making Child care
policy and whistle blower policy. To understand and make an effective child
care policy we visit to Bawana. There we interacted with children as well as
teachers and took inputs for our policy and know all they wanted us to add to it.
We also played few games with kids and that was the best day of internship as I
was a reason behind a kid’s smile.

Our supervisor Mrs Prem Soni Ma’am took us to nearby police station for a
visit. We met a SHO over there who answered us all our curiosity patiently. He
told us how FIR is logged, how investigation is done, charged sheet is made,
complains are logged, how emergency calls are taken and functioning of a
police station.

Mrs Prem Soni Ma’am taught us about Domestic Violence act 2005 and sexual
harassment of women at work place act 2013 with many real cases which gave
us the clear view on it.

Being a law student, I was confused whether this internship would be helpful
for me towards my career as lawyer, considering the work of this organization
was mainly based on the basic level of social service. But after working here I
realized that I have got everything out of it, all that was promised by my
supervisor. Through this internship not only my legal knowledge for my career
grew but it also taught me many good values which only a NGO can teach. The
fresh start of morning begins with Pooja with Prem Ma’am ,interacting with
new people every day solving their problems with not only legally but
emotionally. The emotional support gives a self satisfaction to the distress
person. Overall it was a wonderful journey with a package of good memories
and practical knowledge.
