DEVELOPMENT:
Every great pioneering achievement has its own story. In the case of the
BMW i8, it begins in 2008 with the launch of Project i – and with no lesser
objective than the reinvention of urban mobility. Just one year later, the BMW
Vision EfficientDynamics concept showed what a technology leader geared fully
toward energy saving can look like. This was the basis that gave rise to the BMW
Concept i8, which demonstrated in near-production-ready form where the
development would lead. All available BMW EfficientDynamics technologies
were already united within this vehicle, an intelligent lightweight concept had been
implemented, and the idea of a sports car for the future was already detectable.
Series production of the BMW i8 marks the current peak of the development: a
plug-in hybrid with the appearance and the breathtaking performance of a sports
car, which at the same time exhibits the consumption and emissions of a compact
car. And thus convincingly resolves the apparent contradiction between efficiency
and dynamics.

The BMW i8 offers far more than pure athleticism. With its unique drive
concept, it essentially reinvents the idea of sporting mobility. This is because the
powerful plug-in hybrid system with the combination of BMW eDrive technology
and a BMW TwinPower Turbo 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine brings together
the benefits of an electric motor and a petrol engine to produce an outstanding
driving experience. A sports car at first sight. Extremely low and wide when
viewed from the front, a flat silhouette, powerfully shaped surfaces and precise
contours. When viewed more closely, an ingenious new vehicle concept. With a
design devoted to one function. Sustainability and efficiency meet dynamics and

EXTERIOR:
Viewed from the side, the exaggerated wedge shape, the long drawn-out
lines and the flat silhouette underscore the dynamics. Layering design, a method in
which surfaces and lines overlap and interweave, produces an extremely sporty
appearance all round. The surfaces join harmoniously, creating a compact and agile
impression. Everything appears to come from a unified whole – thus lending the
BMW i8 an extraordinarily powerful stature.
Exterior colours
SCISSOR DOORS:
Off to a swinging start: Thanks to the spectacular scissor doors, the sports
car character of the BMW i8 is recognisable in an instant. Swinging upwards when
opened, the scissor doors are an optical highlight and blend perfectly into the
smooth lines of the aerodynamic bodyshell. When viewed from the inside, the
doors underline the sporty nature of the interior. Thanks to the aluminium, carbon
and thermoplastic used in their construction, they are approximately 50% lighter
than conventionally built doors. As a result, they are particularly convenient to
open and close from the inside. The handle is ergonomically positioned on the
inside of the door panel and also acts as a decorative feature.
Sustainable materials
Ambient light
With the special equipment option of ambient lighting, drivers are able to
create their own individual mood lighting for the interior of the BMW i8. The
lighting designed in LED technology emphasises the luxurious ambience, also acts
as a functional light source and can, if required, alternate between
EfficientDynamics Blue, Amber and White. The result is an interior with a special
glowing effect, which extends from the contour lines of the doors, the instrument
panel and steering wheel to the footwell.
I8 LETTERING:
It’s the stylish details that separate the normal from the exceptional. Such
as the “i8” lettering in the headrests, which is available exclusively with the Pure
Impulse package (in combination with the Carpo Carum Grey interior design). It
stands out with its top-quality, yet discreet craftsmanship, underlining the feeling

newly developed as part of the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, unites all the

point and ensures a rapid response from the turbocharger. During operation, the
170 kW (231 hp) engine proves to be extremely free-revving and delivers up to
320 Nm of torque. At the same time, the dynamics and the high performance level
are accompanied by outstanding efficiency, as demonstrated by the combined
consumption of only 2.1 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 49 g/km.

With the eDrive button pressed, 100 % electric driving is possible in the
BMW i8, with power coming via the front axle only. The hybrid mode allows the
intelligent combination of two types of drive that provide optimal traction in every
situation. The electric drive is located on the front axle, while a high-performance
3-cylinder engine works at the rear axle. All four wheels can thus be powered
simultaneously by two engines, and – depending on the driving situation – this
utilises the advantages of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Outside the city, the
fully-fledged all-wheel drive of the BMW i8 shows its true strength – at speeds of
up to 250 km/h
With the innovative LifeDrive vehicle architecture, the BMW i8 has ideal
conditions for a weight-optimised design and boasts the lowest centre of gravity
amongst all BMW vehicles. A perfect basis for the characteristics of a classical
sports car. Thanks to ultra-lightweight materials, specific aerodynamic
optimisation and a comprehensive package of BMW EfficientDynamics
technologies, the BMW i8 also achieves astonishing figures for consumption and
emissions.
The lithium-ion high-voltage battery joins the two sections of the Drive
module and is thus ideally protected against outside influences. A specially
developed heating and air conditioning system ensures as few temperature
fluctuations as possible, which significantly increases the service life of the battery.

Home charging.
At home you can charge the BMW i8 very easily with a BMW i
Wallbox Pure or Pro. These charging stations, which are mounted on the house or
garage wall, not only complement the unique design of the BMW i8 vehicles
optically, but also charge the BMW i8 much faster than is possible with the charge
cable supplied as standard – consequently, with the Wallbox Pro, the BMW i8 is
can be charged to 80% of its full capacity in less than two hours.

options for the BMW i8 on the move. ChargeNow, a mobility service from BMW
i, is the largest association of mobile charging station providers where the BMW i8
can be charged. This concept also includes ParkNow LongTerm, a supply of long-
term parking spaces including charging facilities for i8 drivers in locations such as
multi-storey car parks.
The navigation of the BMW i8 supports you during the search for suitable
charging options, which are displayed in the vehicle, on the BMW i Remote App
and in the BMW ConnectedDrive Internet portal.
